ASSIGNMENT (Chapter 4)
Mapping CO,PO,Domain,KI : CO3,PO4,C3, CO5, PO8, A3, TS3
CO3: Demonstrate the operation of oscilloscope, signal generator, measuring devices, signal conditioning and sensors. PO4: Ability to utilize systems approach to design and evaluate operational performance. C3 : Applying CO5: Differentiate the functional role of individual towards task completion. PO8: Ability to function effectively as an individual and in a group with the capacity to be a leader. A3 : Valuing TS3: Capable to recognize and respect, behave and believe to the others member in a group.

Sensors are ubiquitous in modern society. There are many factors that influence the choice and application of a sensor in a given situation. As an engineer, to familiarize some of these factors, an in depth literature review and research must be conducted to complete this task. We encourage you to go into extensive detail. When preparing this project, a partial (but not complete by any means) list of issues to address includes: 1. What sensor or sensors can be used for this task? 2. What are the physical properties of the sensor? i.e. how does it operate? Include both theoretical descriptions. 3. What are the advantages and disadvantages (if any) to use this sensor? (consider both physical and operational issues) 4. What are the limitations of the sensor? How to overcome the limitations? 5. Discuss the sensor output and what that imposes upon the sensing circuitry. It may be the case that you believe a recent physical or technological advance will allow a better sensor than is currently used. In such a case, we strongly encourage you to contrast the new and current technologies. To broaden your view on the various sensor applications, each team has been assigned a different project. The list of project and team is as followed: Team 1 2 Task Automotive Industry Cement Industry

The assignment must be carried out in team of 4 members. Each team is given 3 weeks to finish this task. At the end of this task, each team must submit their final report and need to present their work. The report format is as followed: IEEE paper format (not more than 5 pages) Must have abstract, introduction, sensor application, operation, circuit design, issues, limitation, conclusion Presentation will be scheduled in 14 December 2011. Each team needs to submit the report on the date of presentation. Assessment: Presentation 30% (CO5) Peer evaluation 10% (CO5) Final Report 60% (CO3) -------------------- GOOD LUCK! ------------------
