Thousands upon thousands of women have battled
breast cancer. Some have pulled through the disease,
while others succumbed to the disease after a brave fight.
Few people who have waged war with breast cancer are
better known than Susan Komen, a name many instantly
associate with the organization Susan G. Komen for the
Cure, the most widely known, largest and well-funded
breast cancer organization in the United States.
Susan G. Komen was born Susan Goodman in 1943 in
Peoria, Ill. According to her sister, Nancy, Susan was the
high school homecoming queen and a college beauty
queen. After graduating from college, Goodman
returned to her hometown and pursued modeling,
eventually marrying her high school sweetheart, Stan.
Komen was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1977 after
finding a lump that subsequent testing revealed was
cancerous. Komen underwent a procedure called a
subcutaneous mastectomy, in which the outside of the
breast tissue was left intact, but the interior breast tissue
was removed. The doctor who did the procedure assured
Komen that she was cured. Despite urging her sister to
get a second opinion, Komen was convinced she was
safe. But within six months Komen found another lump
under her arm, and, by this point, it was evident that the
cancer had spread. Doctors at the Mayo Clinic soon
determined the cancer had metastasized to her lung and
under her arm.
Komen underwent several different treatments to slow
the progression of the cancer, including radiation and
intense chemotherapy. However, the cancer continued to
spread and eventually her body developed a resistance to
most of the medication. During treatment, Komen
repeatedly spoke with her sister about her wish to make
the entire breast cancer experience and treatments in the
hospital more palatable for women, including improving
the appearance of waiting rooms and treatment centers,
and doing other things to help comfort those who would
find themselves in similar situations in the future.
Komen lost her battle with breast cancer in 1980 at age
36. By the time of her death, Komen had undergone
nine operations and three courses of chemotherapy and

University Healthcare and The Wellness
Center at Berkeley Medical Center will
sponsor the 34th annual Apple Trample
5k, an official event of the Mountain State
Apple Harvest Festival.
The Apple Trample is a great event for
first-time walkers and competitive runners
who want to set a new personal record.
This years even features two start times,
one for runners and one for walkers.
Walkers will start at 10:30am, runners at
11:30am.
The race start will be at the McCormack
Center on the campus of Berkeley Medical
Center. It is a USATF certified course that
follows a gently rolling terrain and finishes
on the track at Cobourn Field with
spectators in the stands.
A new addition to this years Apple
Trample is a personalized, official finishers
Emergency Contact Apple Trample ID
Tag. Register on the web site before
October 12 in order to qualify for the ID
tag. Participants will be presented their
own official emergency contact ID tag
upon crossing the finish line.
Registration information for the Apple
Trample 5k including the ID tag may be

Early registration for the Apple Trample is
$20 with a t-shirt and $17 without a t-
shirt. Registration after October 12 is

Can Knock Out Breast Cancer is the
theme for University Healthcares
discounted mammogram clinics that are
being held each Saturday in October at
both Berkeley Medical Center in
Martinsburg and Jefferson Medical Center
in Ranson.
These special clinics featuring digital
mammography are being held from 8 am
2:30 pm at Berkeley Medical Center and
8 am 3:30 pm at the Womens Imaging
Center at Jefferson Medical Center.
Screening mammograms are being offered
at a discounted community service fee of
$60 (cash, check or credit card only)
which includes the test and the
interpretation by a radiologist.
Jefferson Medical Center is the only
hospital in the tri-state area offering 3D
tomosynthesis mammography. This new
technology allows physicians to examine
breast tissue one layer at a time. Jefferson
Medical Center has offered this technology
since June 2012 when the Womens
Imaging Center opened. It was the first
hospital in West Virginia to offer the 3D
mammography technology.
Berkeley Medical Center plans to offer
3D mammography early next year when
the new womens imaging center opens in
the medical office building across the
street from the hospital campus.
University Healthcares discounted
mammogram program is open to anyone
age 35 and older. Although a physicians
order is not required to participate in the
mammogram clinics, any patients without
a physician will be assigned a physician to
receive the test results. All patients
participating in the screening
mammogram clinics must register in
advance.
