From the Atlantic seaboard to the west coast, from the Peace River country in Canada to the Gulf

of Mexico, and in all parts of the world where standard tread tractors are used, it is the universal opinion of the many thousands of owners that the John Deere Model "D" Tractor is the leader in all the qualities that mean greater farm profit. Plowing, disking, drilling, planting, combining, and threshingin all kinds of farm work these men have found the way to save time, get their work done when conditions are right, and do it at rock-bottom cost. There are a great many reasons why the John Deere Model "D" is first in the qualities you want most.

FIRST IN SIMPLICITY
Only John Deere tractors give you the simplicity of exclusive twocylinder engine design . . . fewer parts . . . a straight-line transmission without power-consuming bevel gears ... a belt pulley right on the crankshaft, the simplest construction possible.

in all the QUALITIES

that mean GREATER Farm Profit
FIRST IN DEPENDABILITY
Only John Deere two-cylinder tractors give you the dependability of fewer and sturdier parts ... greater ability to stand up under heavy loads . . . proper distribution of weight for better, more positive traction. why a recent survey shows that 82% of Joh n Deere owners do fully 75% of their own service work.

EXTRA-LONG LIFE
To the other great features listed, add the extra years of service that the John Deere Model "D" gives, to better understand the big swing to John Deere two-cylinder power. Fewer, heavier, longer-lived parts . . . the use of high-quality materials, careful workmanship, and rigid inspection ... make records of 8, 10, and even 12 or more years of service not at all unusual.

FIRST IN ECONOMY
Only John Deere two-cylinder tractors are backed by a long-time record of success, efficiency and safety in burning the low-cost fuels such as distillate, furnace oil, fuel oil, stove tops, Turner Valley naphtha, and some grades of Diesel oil ... fuels that cost far less and are approximately 10% more powerful. . . fuels that the John Deere converts into steady, dependable power on drawbar and belt. Burning the low-cost, moneysaving fuels in a John Deere tractor is no experiment.

But fuel economy is not all. John Deere Model "D" owners also benefit from another great economy ... the ability to inspect and adjust their tractors right on the farm. The simplicity of two-cylinder design makes possible complete accessibility, one of the big reasons

Low-pressure rubber tires are available for the John Deere Model "D" Tractor when specified.

SIMPLE
There are many reasons why John Deere builds only simple, two-cylinder tractors. The simpler a tractor can be made, the less chance there is for trouble and costly field delays. The fewer parts there are, the stronger and more rugged each part can be. And hand in hand with strength and ruggedness goes longer life, more profit from your tractor investment because of extra years of service. The John Deere Model "D" not only gives you as much, or more, power than other tractors of similar size and weight, but, in addition, gives you more dependable performance

TwtC&de4_

John Deere doesn't build a two-cylinder tractor just to be different. Two-cylinder engine design gives you maximum simplicity, rugged construction for heavy-duty work, and the ability to burn the low-cost fuels successfully. You get: outstanding performance. ` year after year, with a John Deere two-cylinder tractor.

and ability to stand up under the grueling strains of heavy loads. There are only two big cylinders compared with four or six smaller ones, only two pistons against four or six, only four valves and valve springs against eight or twelve, only ten piston rings against sixteen or twenty-four ... greater simplicity is maintained throughout the tractor.

SMOOTH, RESPONSIVE POWER

In tough going. . . on drawbar and belt work of all kinds . . . the John Deere Model "D" Tractor delivers a smooth, ample flow of power. Great weight and perfect balance of rotating parts, coupled with a sensitive governor which controls the engine at all speeds, result in smooth, steady operation under heavy, medium, and light loads. Loads are carried through from one power impulse to another with perfect uniformity. Two-cylinder engine design also makes possible two other exclusive features that turn more of the engine power into actual working power on drawbar and belt. Because the crankshaft of the two-cylinder engine is crosswise to the frame, power flows in a straight line through the spur-gear transmission. The total absence of power-consuming bevel gears assures maximum drawbar power. The belt pulley is mounted directly on the crankshaft and delivers full engine power to all belt-driven machines. Belt power is transmitted without the use of gears of any kind, the simplest construction possible.

You want a tractor that is always ready to work, that stays on the job year after year with the least attention and expense, that saves time and money when you have to get your work done ahead of bad weather when field delays are most costly. Greater dependability, longer life, and lower upkeep costs in a John Deere Model "D" Tractor can be traced directly to simple,

parts and makes it possible to build all other parts sturdier and more durable. The crankshaft on the Model "D" is extra heavy. There are only two main bearings and two connecting rod bearings ... all extra large. The piston pins and connecting rods have larger bearing surfaces to reduce wear and prolong life. Throughout the tractor you'll find strength where strength is needed to lengthen life and hold upkeep costs at rock-bottom.

ONE-PIECE TRANSMISSION CASE

The transmission and differential are all housed in a one-piece, dust-proof, oil-tight case. All holes in the case are drilled at one time as-

two-cylinder engine design.

RUGGED CONSTRUCTION
You have already seen how exclusive twocylinder engine design eliminates hundreds of

BelowAdjusting tappets on the John Deere Model "D", a quick and easy job because everything is out in the open, handy and convenient.

GREATER ACCESSIBILITY
The John Deere Model "D" Tractor is easy to service and adjust. The clutch, for example, can be adjusted in five minutes; clutch bands replaced in from fifteen to twenty minutes. The connecting rod bearings, main bearings, tappets, valves . . . practically all working parts ... can be adjusted from outside the tractor and from a comfortable working position. Air cleaner and oil filter are easy to care for. These are some of the reasons why a recent survey disclosed that 82% of John Deere owners do fully 75% of their own service work. Chassis lubrication is a simple matter on the Model "D" Tractor. It is necessary only to apply the grease gun to a relatively few fittings for a perfect lubrication job, another time- and labor-saver for you. You'll find the John Deere Model "D" a real farm tractor ... built for farm work .. . built so that you can take care of it yourself at a material saving in upkeep expense.

BURNS LOWm COST FUELS

Fuel is, always has been, and probably always will be the biggest expense item in tractor operation. John Deere engineers recognized this fact many years ago when they designed the first Model "D" Tractor to successfully and safely burn the low-cost fuels. They built an engine of two-cylinder design, because only this type of engine enabled them to carry through their planned fuel economy program. the carburetor. The gasified fuel travels only a few inches, each cylinder receives the same charge, the explosion takes place immediately. There is no chance to reliquefy. There are no devices, no dampers in the manifold because none are necessary. The Model "D" burns the low-cost fuels successfully, as well as gasoline or kerosene.

SLOWER SPEED ENGINE SHORT, HOT MANIFOLD

Two-cylinder engine design makes possible a short, properly The manifold on the Model "D" is short and properly heated, and heated manifold the carburetor is located equidistant from each cylinder, as- with both cylinders suring complete fuel combustion equidistant from and greater economy, Secondly, a relatively slow-speed, two-cylinder engine allows more time for the complete combustion of the heavier, slower-burning fuels. The combination of short, hot manifold with the gasified fuel traveling the same distance to each cylinder, and slower engine speed, are two big reasons why there is no harmful oil dilution in a John Deere Model "D" Tractor, resulting in far longer life of all engine parts. Burning distillate, furnace oil, fuel oil, stove tops, Turner Valley naphtha, some grades of Diesel oil, and other money-saving fuels is nothing new to John Deere owners. They've been doing it season after season.

THERMO-SIPHON TEMPERATURE CONTROL

John Deere engineers also provide for adequate and positive temperature control. No matter whether it is a hundred in the shade, or below zero, you can always keep a John Deere engine at the proper temperature for complete fuel combustion, maximum power, and greatest fuel economy. The John Deere thermo-siphon system of cooling quickly and automatically warms the engine to its proper operating temperature. The - 10 -

water does not start circulating until the engine is hot enough to burn the fuel efficiently, then water circulation begins and continues, automatically, always supplying the cooled water to the hottest engine parts where cooling is most needed. There's no pump to leak, wear, or cause trouble. The fan is gear- and shaftdriven, no belts. From the tractor seat, the Model "D" operator can not only watch the temperature gauge, but by means of handy control lever, open or close the radiator shutter to maintain proper engine temperature under varying conditions.

NATURAL-DRAFT CARBURETION
Efficiency and economy are also aided materially by theJohnDeere natural-draft fuel induction system. The fuel is drawn downward from the carburetor, through the short, properly heated manifold, into the combustion chambers. This design aids combustion, permits development of maximum power, and assures uniform fuel economy at all engine speeds.

The John Deere horizontal engine is on the same level as the lower part of the radiator, and the cooled water goes first to the hottest engine parts where parts where cooling is most needed. Arrows indicate direction of water flow.

POSITIVE LUBRICATION

This illustration shows the engine lubrication system. Note how the oil is forced under pressure by a pump through the oil filterhow the thoroughly filtered oil is then forced to main bearings, through drilled leads to connecting rod bearings, and through drilled connecting rods to piston pins. The overflow of oil, which is forced out around the bearings, is caught by the revolving crankshaft and thrown to cylinder walls, cam shaft, and all other parts in the crankcase, bathing them in oil. A direct oil line from the force-feed oil pump assures positive lubrication of the governor. An oil line leading to the tappet case cover lubricates valve stems, rocker arms, and tappets.

There is no more positive system of lubrication than the full-pressure, force-feed system used in the John Deere Model "D" Tractor. Oil is forced under pressure to main bearings, connecting rod bearings, piston pins and governor. An oil line conducts oil to the valve stems, rocker arms, and tappets. Overflow oil is thrown over all other engine parts by the crankshaft. Transmission gears, revolving in a constant bath of oil, are automatically lubricated. Pres-

sure grease-gun fittings make short work of greasing the few places where it is necessary to lubricate by hand.

DIRT AND DUST EXCLUDED

Adequate safeguards for keeping out dust and dirt are also provided. All parts are housed in a dust-proof, oil-tight case and high-quality oil seals are used. The oil wash-down air cleaner removes all dust and grit from the air that is

drawn into the engine. The air travels through the oil in the base of the cleaner, causing the oil to rise as a mist, thoroughly saturating the dust and dirt. The air and dust-laden oil are drawn part way into the closely crimped wire screens in the body of the cleaner unit where the dirty oil is arrested. Only clean air reaches the engine. The John Deere oil wash-down air cleaner is quickly and easily serviced. Fuel is twice-filtered. The John Deere crankcase breather and ventilator (described below) removes injurious gases and vapors before they can condense and form oil sludge, and helps the oil to retain its lubricating qualities regardless of the kind of fuel being used. An additional safeguard is the improved, easily serviced, life-time oil filter which thoroughly cleans the oil.
,j` ii

CRANKCASE VENTILATION
Notice, in the illustration below, the complete provision that has been made for ventilating the crankcase of John Deere tractors. Air is drawn into the breather pipe (1); through the oil-soaked moss filter core (2) where it is cleaned. The clean air circulates through the crankcase 13); forcing objectionable gases and vapors to rise to the highest point in the crankcase BEFORE they can condense and form sludge. A pipe (4) connects with the intake system. The gases are drawn through this pipe into the combustion chambers of the engine (5), where they are burned up and carried out through the exhaust (6). The only attention this ventilating system requires is the servicing of the filter core, a simple, easy matter.
