Services and Professional Development for ASD

The complex nature of ASD requires a comprehensive range of services to support the individual with ASD, their family and the whole team working with them. A book published by Autism New Zealand in the 1990s referred to autism cases being quite rare, occurring in New Zealand at a rate of 1 in 10,000. Figures released by them in 2012 reports autism rates rising to 1 in 100 equating to 40,000 people in New Zealand on the autistic spectrum (Street, 2012). Despite the exponential increase in identified cases of autism and research in this field, community services have not increased at the same rate, creating long waiting lists and some areas of the country being less well provided for. The frustration of waiting lists is apparent in this correspondence from a family I work with: The problem I've had with CDS is although they are a great resource for family, the very second that a family thinks there may be a problem and they may wish to use the therapists at CDS, to talk to their pediatrician because there is a very long waiting list. It took about 9 months to get in to see [therapist ]. (personal correspondence, email, 22nd September, 2013) There is a growing number of services to select from in New Zealand, but identifying and accessing an appropriate service can be stressful and confusing for families. The internet offers links to New Zealand registers for ASD related services, however, the availability of these services varies according to location. The Altogether Autism site lists 525 services across New Zealand, 137 available in Auckland and 85 available in Nelson/Marlborough. The Weka Disability Information site lists 1597 services in total, 391 of these listed under Intellectual and Learning Disabilities , 59 of these in Auckland and 14 of them in Nelson/Marlborough. The Weka site also has a useful Resources for Mori section. Having someone to coordinate services support for families is vitally important. In Nelson this is the role of the Autism Spectrum Disorder Co-ordinator at Child Development Services, part of the Nelson and Marlborough District Health Board. However, access to services remains a confusing landscape for many families who are already under a great deal of stress. [The ASD Co-ordinator at CDS]is a great point of contact but I also had to be referred to her from my pediatrician, I'm not entirely sure whether she's "open to the public" so to speak either. (personal correspondence, email, 22nd September, 2013) The table below lists services, agencies and contacts for families who have a child, or children, with ASDin the Nelson area. This was developed as an artefact in Domain 2 and has been adapted to indicate services which I have already used and those which I would like to investigate further and develop links with.1additional service has been added to the list: Grandparents Raising Grandparents: I have a child with ASD characteristics, but no diagnosis, in my current class and he will be remaining with me in 2014. He is being cared for by his grandfather who has recently been widowed. I would like to explore what this organisation could offer in the way of support for him.

Although this list was originally created with families in mind, it also acts as a resource for school staff and a reminder of the services available both within the Ministry of Education and beyond. For example I have a child with ASD joining my new entrant class next year. After revisiting this list I have requested 2014 dates for Tips for Autism courses being run in the Nelson area. These provide a great way to get a childs

team working collaboratively and setting meaningful, achievable goals for the child right from the start of their school life.
