Making a Life
You use what you get to make a living, but it is what you
give that makes a life. In this church we believe that the Lord
has called us to invest in eternity by sharing the gospel here
and abroad and making disciples in fulfillment of the Great
Commission. That vision is funded by God’s people through
His local church. Unfortunately, some say, “I am not giving; I
am giving up!” We are presenting this week our new General
Operating Budget for the new fiscal year beginning in July. The old adage is true,
“If we fail to plan, we plan to fail.”

A budget is a statement of the financial plans of our church for a year based on
estimates of expenditures during that period, proposals for financing them, and
the demonstrated giving of our people over the last year. I thank God that in the
unity of our church we do not fight “the Battle of Budget Hill.” Some leaders in
other churches are purple-heart veterans of fights over money. Through the years
our staff and Finance Committee have prayerfully given wise planning, common
sense, good organization, and provided help for the glory of God.

We feel led to present a budget of the same amount as this past year. There are some
significant reductions, particularly in the area of personnel. For the first time, we
have included $40,000 a month toward debt service on our building program. This
will go hand-in-hand with the pledged giving of our people in “Run to Win” and
“Join the Journey. A budget is a guide and not a god. It is always faith-based as it
relies on the regular, faithful giving of God’s people over the next year. It reflects
our vision for multiple ministries in this Lighthouse and our priorities in areas
such as missions, evangelism, education, discipleship, worship, and God-called
personnel. We also seek to provide for emergencies that could blow a budget apart
like a candlelight dinner in a dynamite factory.

Ministries are facing increasing challenges. There has been a 26-year decline in
giving percentage among U.S. evangelicals, shrinking 1.5 to 3.5 percent with only
one or two out of ten Christians tithing 10% of their income to the Lord’s work
through His church. Too many ignore the 2300 references to money and possessions
in the Bible, and 35% of pastors don’t preach about giving though they practice it.
God has called us to be wise stewards of His resources. The recession is a tough
time, but there have always been challenges. Take the “stew” out of “stewardship”
and joyfully trust the Lord as a “hilarious giver” who gives as you have “purposed
in your heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion” (2 Corinthians 9:7). Your
leadership team that has been “appointed by the church” for “this gracious work
which is being administered for the glory of the Lord” (2 Corinthians 8:19).

“SEEKING GOD THIS SEASON!”
DAY OF PRAYER CONCERNING HURRICANE SEASON
May 31, 2009
“Seek the peace [shalom—multi-faceted well-being] of the city
where I have sent you…., and pray to the Lord on its behalf; for in
its peace you will have peace [well-being].”
Jeremiah 29:7

Jeremiah 29:7 gives God’s instructions to His people at a time

when they were under His chastening judgment in Babylon. He
sent them there. He called them to seek and pray for the well-being
of the place in which He placed them. Jeremiah 18:7-11 tells of
God’s willingness to chasten or to restore. We are in Florida, in the
USA and our land is experiencing a measure of God’s
chastening—more as we ignore His signals calling His people to
seek Him—as churches and as a nation. His calls continue …
through His Word, through fellow believers, and through
circumstances, including calamities—storms, droughts, fires,
earthquakes, economic turmoil… As a matter of fact, the well-
known verse, 2 Chronicles 7:14 about God healing a land is
connected to verse 13 which says, “If I shut up heaven so that
there is no rain, or if I … [do other things], or if I send pestilence
among My people, and My people… humble themselves and
pray… seek My face…. turn from their wicked ways, then I will
hear… forgive… heal their land.” We see evidence of God
speaking in our day. It is time to pray. Use these 7 pointers as you
pray…

1. Humble Honesty. Ask God to show you (individually and as a

church) anything that is sin in His eyes. Repent of that and turn
to do the right thing. Thank Him for forgiveness (1 John 1:7-9).

2. Admit Needs in Your Community. Seek God for His

“shalom” where you live. Of course, ultimately that means
people coming to a personal faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and
Savior—how many problems that would solve in the heart, the
home, the workplace, in businesses and in the halls of
government. Pray for the work of His Spirit, convicting of sin,
righteousness, and the judgment to come (John 16:8-11; Acts
24:25).

3. Specific Individuals. Pray for people you know who need a

personal relationship to Jesus. Ask God to work in their lives
and hearts. Look for open doors to share His love and His call
to come to Jesus.

4. Hurricanes. Ask God for His Mercy this Hurricane Season

and for wisdom and grace for all involved in Disaster Relief
preparations and efforts. Pray for mercy, but don’t presume
and fail to prepare. Remember, the norm is hurricanes. An out-
of-the-ordinary calm season would be the kindness of God.

5. Spiritual Awakening. Ask God for His peace, His Shalom in

our Nation. Pray for our nation—for each heart—to turn “from
its evil” and reform its ways and deeds (Jeremiah 18:8, 11).
Pray for a turning to God. Included in turning is obedience to
God about righteousness in government, education, business,
and ministry… every area of society (Proverbs 14:34). Pray for
spiritually healthy churches to share the message of faith in
Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.

6. Make Disciples. Be Ready to share with those God brings

across your path. Look for Divine Appointments to speak the
truth of who Jesus is and what Jesus says.

7. Give Thanks. Be Ready to Thank God and Praise Him for how
He answers—either way… by faith.
