A Modest Proposal by Emilia Poverty is a very common problem in Colombia. Both the government and private organizations have been managing this problem with supercial approaches. I have a proposal to make. Since the government and us as a community aren't helping these people from Colombia in poor situations. I suggest we should all just create a new sport like shooting and they will be the targets. We can also use them as slaves and as bait for shark because sharks always eat people so now they can do it without anyone trying to get these people out. We can also use them as sofas, that way we can reduce the production of furniture and help the environment. These people already had the chance to make something of their lives but they didnt take advantage of it, or didnt work hard enough. They are useless anyways, right? They just take up space in the street and bother you by asking for money or food. This is their fate, how has no one have come up with this idea yet? Its completely practical and it helps everyone. It helps us by getting new ways of furniture, a stylish new sofa created from a real living person! How original is that? And by using them as bait we will be getting rid of all that extra population, because as most of you know the world is overpopulated, and we wont need to use the animals that thanks to us are almost extinct. By using them as slaves all of our house chores will be done in no time, and we wont even have to pay them or give them food, once they are really tired and cant work anymore we get new poor people to work for us. They are like an easy disposable robot. There are so many poor people in Colombia, in fact all around the world that there will never be an end to this. People can create a business out of these and make a lot of money. So I want to declare that I have just created this business. We will start selling these people to everyone who needs them. There will be no restrictions whatsoever, except that they are not returnable and not replaceable so if you dont like the person that is given to you, you will have to use him until he/she cant take it anymore, and you buy a new one. The only thing you have to do is vote and make this proposal a reality. What about human rights? Well these people have been given a chance of a lifetime! They were useless before, no money, no jobs, no place to live, well now they have the chance to make themselves useful. It will make them happy to nally be worth something, to be doing something with their lives, it will also make the people they are working for happy, because they nally have someone to help them around the house, or they nally have that new original chair they wanted. They will be expensive since, they are a three in one package deal, they are not your usual bait, or furniture, no they are original and cannot be replaced. Hopefully by 2014 this proposal will be accepted by the governments all around the world, and we will make this proposal a reality as soon as possible. Emilia, Grade 8 The English School, Bogota

A Modest Proposal by Antonia An actual situation that is happening in Bogota is the problem of all the dumping in the streets. Tons and tons of rubbish are being thrown away without concern for the environment or the sanitary measurements that should be taken so these wastes don't harm the population and the environment. A viable and possible solution is to incinerate these wastes, but the new question about this process is: What about the ashes?, We will need a place to dump the ashes of all the rubbish, but not the streets of our city. I think that the ashes should be used as a new resource to make food. Various studies have shown that ashes contain Phosphorus in about a 60% of their chemical compound, phosphorus is a very nutritive chemical that the human body needs, so why dont we use these ashes as our to make bread? That will help the environment as we will not just dump the ashes as we do with all the wastes that we produce. Ashes can contain different types of chemicals, but also necessary elements that the body needs to work appropriately like fructose (38%), glucose (31%), sucrose (1%), water (17%) and 9 other carbohydrates. Making bread with these ashes will be perfect for feeding all of the population that is undernourished, or even in the supermarkets we can sell ash bread. When an object is incinerated, even though its mass and proportions decrease, the quantity of this new material we can obtain is huge. According to a baker, one and a half cups of our are needed to make a big loaf of bread. Incinerating an average trash bag of 7 kilograms will produce about 5 kilograms of ashes, which will make 70 cups of our. With this enormous quantity we can make enough bread for about 60 families, we can even sell this bread to the mayor, I bet he will be very pleased to see how well these wastes are being managed and re-used. The statistics show that the nutritive elements that these ashes contain are very powerful and can help a child suffering from malnutrition in almost a week with a diet based on this bread and water. Also, the creating process of this new food is very quick, as the ashes just need to be grinded and sifted once, meanwhile wheat our needs to be grinded four times and sifted two times. This raw material is also very light, with a very low caloric value, which makes ash bread perfect for those who want to stay in shape. The mayor will be pleased to gure out that the excellent managements of wastes in the city also helps to beat malnutrition and undernourishment, so the poor families have something to eat. An average loaf of bread costs between $3,500 and $4,500; an average loaf of ash bread will cost from $300 to $700. These prices are much more accessible for people with low economic income, and the size of this loaf will be almost twice than an average loaf of white bread, which will make it better for a family to buy this product. White bread goes dry and hard in about ve days, the decomposing process of the ash bread is from 40 to 60 days to go hard and dry, so this resource is not perishable in a short period of time, so this food is perfect for a long trip or just to have it in the cupboard and preserve it for a long period of time. We have interviewed different types of people, with high and low income, of all the economic classes and they were completely in favor of making ash bread. We even gave them some free samples of bread so they could try it and tell us how the bread is in terms of taste and softness. Everybody agreed that the bread was very soft, as the ashes are very light materials, even lighter than wheat our, but they

disagreed in terms of taste. Some of them said that it was very tasteless, even a bit dry, so we decided that the best option for giving the bread a better taste was to use more ashes to make jelly. It is just a simple mixture of ashes, water and sugar. After this jelly was created, everybody agreed that the ash bread tastes better with this ash jelly. The mayor will be very pleased when he sees that this new project is succeeding, we can even sell this bread to the mayor, so he knows how all the waste that this city produces tastes and thinks about the best solution for trash dumping.
