Teaching and Learning Activities Teacher demonstrates an activity on floating and sinking Good morning students. How are you today? Have you taken your breakfast? Did anything interesting happen yesterday? Do you want to share with us? Teacher waits and listens to students responses Now, I want to demonstrate an activity. Students, please come forward. On my table you can see some materials. Have a look at them. What is this? Students: A stone Put the stone into a beaker of water. What do you observe? Teacher waits for the students to response. Students: It sinks. Why ? Students: Because it is heavy. Teacher writes the students responses on the board. The teacher takes a polystrene. What is this? Students: A polystyrene. Put the polystyrene into the beaker of water. What do you observe? Students: It floats.

Why? Students: Because it is light. Teacher writes the students responses on the board, What can you conclude from these activities? Students make a few guesses. Students:The stone is heavy, it sinks. The cork is light, it floats. So, your guesses are: The stone is heavy, it sinks. The cork is light, it floats. This is our topic for today. Floating and sinking.

Step 1 Teacher distributes worksheets 1 and asks the pupils to answer. Now, I want you to form group of 7. Choose your leader. You will do an activity. The leader please come to the front and take some objects and liquid. Predict whether those materials float or sink. Please refer to worksheet 1. We will discuss the answer. Students carry out activity as instructed What can you say from your findings? Which objects or liquids float? Students respond Teacher shows animation using courseware to show floating stone. Just now, you said that heavy objects will sink in water and light objects will float in water. Do you know that stone can float? Students respond.

Now, look at the screen. I show you the floating stone. What do you observe? Can someone explain to your friends? Student responds. Let us see the secret of floating stone. The stone is made from styrofoam. That is why the stone floating in water. What can you relate between this activity and previous activity? Students respond. Good. The ability of an objects or liquids to float and sink are not depends on their weight but their density. Step 2 Teacher asks about the previous lesson. We have learn about density in previous lesson. Can someone tell me the formula of density? Student responds. Very good! Density is equal to mass per volume. and the unit is gram per cubic centimeter. Teacher writes this on the board. Teacher explains the ability of a substance to float depends on its density compared to the density of water. The ability of a substance to float and sink depends on its density compared to the density of water. What is the density of water? Students respond : It is 1.0 g/cm Excellent. A substance that has a density lower than 1.0 g/cm will float in water. A substance that has a density higher than 1.0 g/cm will sink in water. Look at the screen, calculate the density of each object.

Students carry out the activity as instructed. Have you finished your exercise class? What is the density of metal ball? What is the density of cork? What is the density of glass marble? What is the density of plasticine? What is the density of styrofoam? What is the density of wood block? Correct! Now, can you tell me which objects will float and sink? Students respond. Now, we will see whether your answer is correct or not. What can you say from your findings? Students: 1.Objects or liquids of with densities higher than water -sink. 2. Objects or liquids of densities lesser than water float Good! Step 3 Teacher distributes the worksheets and asks the pupils to answer. Teacher discusses the answers I have prepared some work for you to do. Please complete the exercise in worksheet 2. Students carry out the activity as instructed and teacher discusses Closure with pupils. Teacher asks student to carry out matching activity Now, I want to ask 4 persons to come out. Any volunteer? Students respond. Each one of you take one card and stick to the correct group whether it sink or float. Very good! Thats all for today. I will see you the next lesson. Do revise todays

lesson. Thank you class.
