Matthew Shepard, a Gay University of Wyoming student, was abducted by two men shortly after midnight on October 7, 1998. The men, Aaron McKinney and Russell Henderson, drove Shepard east of town, where they tied him to a split-rail fence and repeatedly beat him with the butt end of a pistol. He died several days later of his wounds. The murder made headlines around the world and transformed Shepard into a symbol. Much as the fatal beating of Emmett Till came to symbolize the discrimination suffered by African Americans in the Jim Crow South almost a half century before, Shepard became the face of violence against Gay, Lesbian and Transgender people. Wyoming was never quite the same. The Star-Tribune has taken stock of where the Cowboy State stands 15-years after Shepards death. What has changed? What hasn't? Most Gays and Lesbians say life has improved. People are more accepting and less prone to stereotypes. But only a few agreed to speak publicly. Some cited family concerns. It is our goal to record the positive contributions GLBT people make to their community and the local community at large. While AIDS and Hate CRIMES are certainly not positive things, we seek to draw the positive from the negative. We hold up Paul Delph and Matthew Shepard and their families as models of how human beings should or could react to each other and how families should support loved ones whose lives are not in the box right wing religious zealots want them in. Delph, a multi-talented Cincinnatian, died of AIDS in 1996. His mother shut down her business to care for him. Surgical cleaning, root planing and flouride treatments are by far and away the most common. Why are these things important? Because liver, kidney and heart disease can develop from such a situation. So, toothless pets look like homeless pets; and no one wants that. So how do we avoid this? Tip 1.) Were now off to the pet store to get a toothbrush and tuna or liver flavored toothpaste. Rubberized toys are out there that you can load with toothpaste, and these work pretty well too. Tip 2.) Simply wipe off the teeth with a plain dry cotton ball. This is simplicity at its finest. It wipes off the slimy plaque before it consolidates into hard tarter. Do this once or twice a week and that homeless look will never come knocking at your door. Tip 3.) Another neat tip is food. It was the final twist in an event that had been overshadowed by the issue of Gay rights. Sources inside the Russian team had denied the kiss was a protest at Russias anti-Gay laws. Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law in June that punishes the dissemination of information about homosexuality to minors, but activists say it can be used for a broad crackdown against Gays. they had a dinner party with straight friends, theyd only invite straight friends. If they had a dinner with Gay Friends, theyd only invite Gay Friends. Very few in Casper knew Janet de Vries, 56, and her partner were Lesbians and had committed their lives to each other. We did not officially come out at work for fear of losing our jobs, de Vries said. I dont know whether it was a real fear, or just a fear of the unknown. Either way, it was the early 80s, and they kept it a secret. The oil bust of the late 1980s gave de Vries, then a geologist, a chance to try something new. She moved to Laramie to become a career counselor. She started speaking in education classes, sociology classes and womens studies classes. It was before actors played Gay Characters on TV, before Ellen DeGeneres came out to Oprah Winfrey, before the murder of openly Gay University of Wyoming student Matthew Shepard. She wanted people to see someone who was Gay or Lesbian. She wanted to break down stereotypes. When she moved back to Casper, she felt more comfortable with who she was. She came out to her straight friends. Dinner parties became a mix of both sexualities. Then Shepard was killed. De Vries remembers hearing the news. Like September 11 and the day John F. Kennedy was shot, she remembers where she was and what she was doing. Five years after Shepards murder, Time magazine featured de Vries and asked if Wyoming had changed since his death. Fifteen years later she took another stab at the question. Every five years weve made progress, locally, statewide and nationally, she said. Wyoming has a legislator who is openly Gay. Natrona County legislators have attended Caspers Parents Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays group. They might not agree, but at least theyre willing to sit down at the table and talk. That is tremendous progress, de Vries said.

The National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association publishes a stylebook on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender issues. The stylebook contains definitions of entries on common words and phrases and updates terms to reflect the association's mission of inclusive coverage. Below are the associations guidelines on some key terms: Gay: An adjective that has largely replaced homosexual in referring to men who are sexually and affectionately attracted to other men. Avoid using as a singular noun. For women, Lesbian is generally used, but when possible ask the person which term she prefers. To include both, use Gay men and Lesbians. Gender identity: An individuals emotional and psychological sense of being male or female. Not necessarily the same as an individual's sex at birth. Queer: Originally a pejorative term for Gay, now being reclaimed by some Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender people as a self-affirming umbrella term. Offensive when used as an epithet. Use only if there is a compelling reason. Transgender (adj.): An umbrella term that refers to people whose physical, sexual characteristics may not match

GLBT NewsPage 5
their gender identity. Some female and male cross-dressers, drag queens or kings, female or male impersonators, and intersex individuals may also identify as transgender. Use the name and personal pronouns that are consistent with how the individual lives publicly. When possible, ask which term the person prefers. As a noun, use transgender people. Transgender man: A person who was considered female at birth but identifies and lives as a man. Transgender people sometimes use the acronym FTM, or female to male. Sometimes shortened colloquially to trans man. Transgender woman: A person who was considered male at birth but identifies and lives as a woman. Transgender people sometimes use the acronym MTF, or male to female. Sometimes shortened colloquially to trans woman. Transsexual (n and adj.): Avoid this antiquated term in favor of Transgender and Transgender people. Some individuals prefer it, but it can carry misleading medical connotations. Transvestite: Avoid this antiquated term. Synonymous with crossdresser.

The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) has a new leader. The Rev. Elizabeth Eaton, Bishop of the Northeast Ohio Synod was elected as Presiding Bishop of the ELCA at the church's national conference in Pittsburgh. Bishop Eaton was elected on the fifth ballot with 600 votes compared to 287 for Bishop Mark Hanson who has led the ELCA for the last 12 years. Bishop Eaton, who becomes the first woman to lead the ELCA, addressed the issue of inclusion in her remarks to the assembly following her election. We are a church that is overwhelmingly European in a culture that is increasingly pluralistic. We need to welcome the gifts of those who come from different places, that is a conversation we need to have as a church. Some members were addressing concerns regarding full inclusion of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer members. Issues included understanding Transgender people and same-sex marriage and families. For some, full inclusion is a biblical imperative.

McNeill is the first transgender person to lead a mainline Protestant faithbased organization.
