Ethnic studies key to preserving Hispanic heritage

By John Benson Hispanic Heritage Month highlights the contributions of Latino Americans along with celebrating their culture. While the annual observance is important, on a larger scale such achievement and commemorations take place every day in school district and college ethnic studies programs across the country. Finally, Nuo has high hopes the notion of ethnic studies will remain a priority within the Latino community. He feels this is especially true during Hispanic Heritage Month. Its important that we recognize the contributions that all people make to this country, Nuo said.

Especially how in our country for way too long the story of Latinos has been ignored. In many times and many ways, its been purposely kept from Latinos themselves, so having Hispanic Heritage Month allows the children, our kids and even many At the most basic level, Hispanic ethnic So giving people a greater sense adults, to rediscover who we are and More and more, theres at least a studies programs allow individuals to of pride in themselves has an our contribution to the greater good of kind of awareness where this history better understand their culture, ideals, immense impact on how people learn. this country. is being ignored, Nuo said. Bilingual education: Why gutting it hurts us all

Hispanic Heritage Month provides the perfect opportunity to explore how bilingual education positively or negatively affect our children. Despite study after study showing that bilingual education benefits students and communities, budget cuts and xenophobia nationwide have led to many dual-language programs being cut in Florida, Texas and California. Most recently, for example, the Irving Independence School District outside of Dallas gutted its program, which for years was championed by newly retired school board member Ronda Huffstetler. Specifically upsetting for her is that students can test out of mainly Spanishspeaking classes and attend Englishonly classes as early as second grade. Furthermore, the American Psychiatric Association reports children who grow up bilingual have an enhanced ability to process sounds and therefore are more likely to pay attention in a learning situation, while a study from Northwestern University showed the same children have reduced levels of anxiety, loneliness and poor selfesteem. Limiting bilingual education adversely affects students Institute for Learning & Brain Sciences Translation, Outreach, and Education Director Sarah Roseberry Lytle told VOXXI that research clearly shows the benefits for English language learning students in bilingual-focused curriculum. She pointed out thats not always been the case, with needed myth-debunking recently taking place. student who still has a lot of needs to communicate in Spanish may prefer to be perceived as an English speaker and communicate only in English without having all of their education needs met. Educational Advancement Cornish said there is conflicting research regarding how long it takes a child to acquire another language. The general idea most people accept is a child becomes proficient socially and can communicate like other children in formal situations in about three to five years. So how does this relate to bilingual education? Academic language takes five to seven years to develop, Cornish said. There are some questions whether it takes much longer for a child to catch up with the academic English and the complex language they need in the classroom. So why thats important is during this time when they are not communicating language at the same level as their monolingual peers, theres a potential for them to be missing out on curriculum, and especially with Common Core standards that are coming out where all of our children will be judged uniformly. Spanish speaking students arent going to have the same access if all the instruction is in English. Family While immigrant or first generation parents want their children to assimilate, Cornish said hes seeing more families where children are dropping their home language. Ive had tearful conversations with parents who are saying, Im losing the ability to communicate with my child, what do I do? Cornish said. Thats kind of a hard thing to address. There are a lot of social pressures involved in that that none of us can really control. Health A recent University of Kentucky College of Medicine study has researchers believing more reserve brainpower, enhanced by being bilingual from an early age, helps protect against memory losses caused by Alzheimers and dementia.

2. Est preparado si siente olor a gas natural.

Here are two important safety tips for you to remember:

1. Protect yourself from a silent killer. Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas that is a product of incomplete burning of natural gas, propane, gasoline, coal or wood. It can result from a faulty chimney, flue or vent from a heating appliance or water heater. Have your heating system and chimney, flues and vents checked once a year by a professional. 2. Be prepared if you smell natural gas. If you smell that distinctive odor its like the smell of rotten eggs GET UP, GET OUT and call RG&E immediately from a neighbors phone. Well respond quickly to make sure you and your family are safe. If you are an RG&E natural gas customer and need to report a natural gas emergency or suspect a carbon monoxide problem, call us at 1.800.743.1702.

FINANCES & ME
The engagement process and setting a good foundation for your marriage relationship are important. However couples must plan and assess early for the financial course of this new stage of married life. Having open dialogue on finance from the engagement will help create healthy relationship, because the financial background of our partner, like ourselves, have a significant impact on household finances when they are incorporated. Its important to know how your partner administers and manages money, their ability to pay, their indebtedness, credit, and how they manage their savings or if they have a contingency reserve. Other financial commitments like child support, alimony or debts theyve co-signed are important. Moreover, couples should talk about investments , retirement or pension funds , insurance plans , reserves, bonds and stocks they may have . Another important aspect is how much money you both makeremember that the marriage will create other

Please note that when your partner discloses this information it does mean an infringement on his/her privacy. On the contrary, it is a way to form a starting point to begin evaluating and projecting from a financial perspective the best way forward with a solidified base. The topic of money is one of the most difficult subjects for couples to handle and in turn is one of the main causes of divorce. The basis of marriage is trust, sincerity, honesty and communication in all aspects especially your finances. Take time with your partner to plan your financial married life with good communication and professional advice. This will help you make good decisions in the future.

On the other hand, it is important to establish a plan on how you will handle future financial wind-falls like getting an inheritance, compensation or indemnification, if applicable the case. Many times couples are unaware of the legal implications of things like pre -nuptial agreements and benefits. Its also important to create a will, which can be performed at any time during the marriage for the benefit of both husband and wife and their heirs. Once you begin married life it is important to keep your beneficiaries updated on any insurance policies, disability and retirement benefits. Will Hispanics Kill the Republican Party?

Reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated. Mark Twain In my 23rd year, I met U.S. Senator Barry Goldwater (R-AZ) at the University of Raoul Lowery Contreras Oregon. He signed my copy of his earthshaking book, CONSCIENCE Of a CONSERVATIVE. Being a Republican before I was a conservative however, I answered the call to arms of my former boss United States Senator Thomas H. Kuchel (RCA) to join the fight for the Republican 1964 Presidential nomination on the side of New York Governor Nelson Rockefeller. I was disappointed when the Goldwater wave overrode Governor Rockefeller for the nomination and further disappointed when Lyndon Baines Johnson overwhelmed Goldwater in November, 1964. The GOP was almost killed by the Democratic wave. with higher percentages among Puerto conceded hours before the polls closed Ricans and Dominicans than among in California, Oregon, Washington, Cubans and Mexican Americans. They assume, wrongly, that the GOP Hispanic vote will remain at 25% despite the fact that the Hispanic Republican vote has approached 50 percent in past elections; i.e. Hispanic votes have been documented only since 1968. Their 25% is based on the Romney Hispanic vote of 2012. Belying that assumption are actual Hispanic votes cast for John McCain -- 31% and George W. is credited with 44% in 2004. No one knows how Hispanics voted in 1952 and 56 but we can guess that they voted for their Commanding General just like the rest of America did. The percentage is the key. But it is not when one uses a static 25% based on an outlier election result of 2012. We know this, since Hispanic votes have been counted and studied, each Republican that has earned 35% or more of the Hispanic vote has won the Presidency; that includes Nixon, Reagan, Bush I and Bush II. Can Republicans increase their Hispanic vote by a third more than Mitt Romney received in 2012? Fact: Hispanics hold two governorships (Brian Sandoval in Nevada, Susanna Martinez in New Mexico) and, one U.S. Senator named Marco Rubio. Do pundits and Latino Decisions think that more Hispanics wont vote Republican in 2016 if one of those three Hispanic political giants is on the Republican Presidential ticket? If they do, they are blind and/or consider Hispanics to be stupid. Contreras books are available at amazon.com

The Perfect Storm of Hope is Brewing

For the first time in a long time, it seems to me, that the communitys desire of assisting a majority of our City of Rochester students to be successful academically and in life is within reach. Its the coming together of key sector leaders, bolstered by communitywide movements and initiatives, plus key educational reforms and improvements, that could finally result in what so many of us have dreamed about for the children of our fair city. Servant Leadership: One of the key ingredients to this storm of hope is the leadership currently being demonstrated at the highest levels of the Rochester City School District. In all of my years of partnering with the RCSD I have never heard a clearer, more compelling message focused on their key customer students and their families. To have a local leader who genuinely cares for our kids and their families, with no agenda of leaving at the next offer, has brought a stability that lends to hope. The call to change and to think out of the box may, at times, sound simplistic, but it isnt simple: literacy twenty-four seven, time: attendance, extended day, out of school time, protecting the educational day, and addressing summer learning loss; partnerships: clear and understood, public/private leveraging resources; transparent, honest, and fair focused on student achievement. Movements and Initiative: There are several local initiatives moving our community towards collective impact on academic success, college matriculation, and successful postcollege employment. ROC the Future has been busy working at connecting the community with data-driven common goals spanning cradle to career. One of its earliest communitywide calls to action is the Campaign for Grade-level Reading. The campaign is a collaboration of foundations, nonprofits, states and communities focused on the No.1 predictor of school success: third grade reading. Additional action plans are being developed. In 2013, Rochester will be one of fifteen sites nationwide that will host a Grad Nation Community Summit. The summits are intended to hasten the United States progress towards reaching the goal of a 90 percent national graduation rate by 2020. In 100 communities across the 18 country, leaders from businesses, civic organizations, non-profits, local government, public schools, higher education, foundations and faithbased organizations will join with parents and young people to develop a blueprint to accelerate progress. The United Way of Greater Rochesters recently released Blueprint for Change, and funding aligned to it, under the focus area Preparing Kids for Success, is looking to facilitate students having increased school attendance, improved academic performance, regular attendance in out-of-schooltime programs, and increased socialemotional and physical wellness. The Greater Rochester Summer Learning Association, in a K - 8th grade model now being adopted nationwide, is facilitating high-quality summer enrichment on college campuses. In recent years programs have been started at the U of R, MCC, Nazareth College, and SUNY Geneseo, with other institutions of higher learning considering joining the movement. Educational Reforms and Improvements: Key reforms like the adoption of the common core, RCSD students having to take fewer exams, the statewide application of a consistent teacher evaluation that brings accountability, and the recently approved teacher contract with greater school autonomy and the potential for teacher-led schools - all bid well for the possibility of greater academic achievement. The move to community schools as well can facilitate taking advantage of all that is coming together with the intent of helping our children. Some local businessmen are identifying best-practice, successful charter schools and wooing them to Rochester to the benefit of our community. There is much to be hopeful about. Get involvedsupport these efforts. We owe it to the children of our communitywe owe it to ourselves.
