Christ the King Mission Statement

The People of Christ the King in Lombard are a welcoming, vibrant faith community building the kingdom of God through our many ministries. We celebrate our diversity, seeking to realize the gifts of each member of our parish, as we are all joined together under one faith, in a spiritual journey of evangelization, service to others, and a reverence for all life. In the Eucharist, we find new life, and bring this life to others through stewardship, education, and worship.

CALL TO PRAYER
FOR LIFE, MARRIAGE AND RELIGIOUS LIBERTY
In this Year of Faith, the Catholic Bishops of the United States have called for a nationwide effort to advance a movement for Life, Marriage, and Religious Liberty through prayer, penance, and sacrifice. Catholics across the nation are being encouraged to pray for rebuilding a culture favorable to life and marriage and for increased protections of religious liberty. This call to prayer is prompted by unprecedented challenges to the Church and the nation, particularly the HHS Mandate and current trends in government and culture toward redefining marriage. The goal of this call to prayer is twofold: (1) to increase awareness of these challenges and (2) to build spiritual stamina and fortitude among the faithful so that we can be effective and joyful witnesses of faith, hope, and charity and agents of the New Evangelization. Beginning on the Sunday after Christmas, the Feast of the Holy Family, the Call to Prayer for Life, Marriage and Religious Liberty has five components: Monthly Eucharistic Holy Hours in cathedrals and parishes Need for Daily Rosary by families and individuals spiritual stamina Special Prayers of the Faithful at all Masses Fasting and abstinence from meat on Fridays Join the movement! A Fortnight for Freedom in June/July 2013 Pray for our nation. Pray for life, marriage and religious liberty.

Making a Positive Effort

My family taught the importance of coming together to pray at Mass, as all parents do. Our parents want the best for us, which includes Grace from God that we receive at Mass. As I look out in the assembly or catch a quick glance at parishioners coming in, there is great number of parishioners who attend mass regularly, high school , college after college. It is so awesome to see this and we thank you for your efforts and dedication in attending mass. Parents must be very proud! Lets take this good effort to the next level. Why dont we build on this and add opportunities of service on a parish commission, liturgical ministry, youth outreach, to name a few. As we become part of the parish leadership, we come to know others that we serve with. During this month of November, if you are in your 20s and want to build on the good work you have done in the past, consider one of the areas of leadership. Our staff is always willing to talk with you personally, to help you decide or answer questions. Thank you for the leadership roles you have taken at home, work and school. Lets take this to the next level and making a positive effort! eileen@ctklombard.org frpeter@ctklombard.org Parish Office: (630) 629-1717

More News About Pastoral Plan And Your Input

The Diocesan Pastoral Council, comprised of parishioners from across the Diocese of Joliet, has been developing a comprehensive pastoral plan that will offer a roadmap for every parish to build community and to strengthen faith. Through numerous workshops, surveys, and group discussion sessions, a planning group within the Diocesan Pastoral Council is focusing on some key pastoral topics that need more input from all parishioners in the Diocese. Listed below are a few more of the topics being explored: Increase understanding of the Sacraments and emphasize their importance. Be more welcoming. Increase the frequency of the community's engagement with teens and young adults. Evangelize and defend the Faith. Demonstrate how all the aspects of Catholic social teaching are put into action. Advocate for those in need. In order to reach these goals, the pastoral planning committee continues to ask for your ideas. An online survey has been set up at https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/ ActionsIdeas to gather your suggestions. In addition, 90minute group "forums" are being organized in churches around the Diocese to gather ideas in face-to-face settings. Please visit the Diocesan Pastoral Council web site for more information on upcoming forum locations at http:// www.dioceseofjoliet.org/pastoralcouncil/. Please participate in this endeavor to carry out the work that Christ has given to us as Catholic faithful. Let us "go into all the world and proclaim the good news to the whole creation." Thank you to the 44 parishioners that came out on Tuesday, Oct. 22 to give their input. All parishioners are encouraged to fill out the survey please do so immediately. Your input is vital to the process. Please use any of the above ways or Christ the King website has a link to the survey as well. Thank you, God Bless! Eileen Maggiore, Pastoral Associate

The Church welcomes with joy and compassion the mothers who, recognizing that all life is a gift from God, are awaiting a child through pregnancy or adoption. During the weekend of October 26/27, we will be offering a special blessing for these expectant mothers during mass. Such a blessing sustains the parents by imparting grace and comfort in time of concern and need, unites the parish in prayer for the unborn child, and fosters respect for human life within society.

Year of Faith: Catechism Corner

In this new universe, the heavenly Jerusalem, God will have his dwelling among men. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning nor crying nor pain any more, for the former things have passed away For man, this consummation will be the final realization of the unity of the human race, which God willed from creation and of which the pilgrim Church has been in the nature of sacrament. Those who are united with Christ will form the community of the redeemed, the holy city of God, the Bride, the wife of the Lamb. She will not be wounded any longer by sin, stains, selflove, that destroy or wound the earthly community. The beatific vision, in which God opens himself in an inexhaustible way to the elect, will be the everflowing well-spring of happiness, peace, and mutual communion. (CCC, n. 1044-1045).

LIFE MATTERS: FORGIVENESS AND HEALING AFTER ABORTION

My life is ruined. I have been depressed, suicidal, guilt-ridden for 24 years. I beg every day for forgiveness. I cannot believe God would forgive the life I have led. Over the years I continually went to confession. A priest once told me, God has forgiven you. You need to forgive yourself. You are putting yourself through your own purgatory. But I could not bring myself to accept forgiveness. I know God has forgiven me for this sin I have committed but it is so hard for me to forgive myself. Thirteen years later and I still havent forgiven myself. I live with this shame, guilt and disgust every day of my life. These are but a few of the many thousands of messages sent to the website of Project Rachel Ministry (www.HopeAfterAbortion.org), the post-abortion ministry of the Catholic Church. They speak for many who struggle with forgiveness after abortion. A priest active in Project Rachel Ministry once spoke of the spiritual desolation experienced by post-abortive women: Many feel they have committed the unforgivable sin and are destined for hell, or that they deserve to be on death row. Most suffer this spiritual desolation in silence, too ashamed and feeling unworthy to seek reconciliation from God. That a deeply remorseful woman does not trust in Gods desirehis eagernessto forgive her, or that after receiving absolution in the Sacrament of Reconciliation she cannot accept that she has been forgiven or remains unable to forgive herselfthese obstacles to healing and peace tell us nothing about who God is or how efficacious the Sacrament is. What they tell us is that such women are devastated by the loss of their children, aware of the seriousness of their sin, and that they have never encountered such merciful love in their relationships with otherslove that might have allowed them to hope in Gods infinitely greater merciful love. Is the despair of forgiveness merely a product of Catholic guilt as some abortion supporters have suggested? Even nonbelievers recognize their need for Gods forgiveness and for the ability to forgive themselves. Another letter to HopeAfterAbortion reads in part: Im not religious but Im scared that Im going to be punished for what Ive done, in the afterlife. Where do those who were raised atheist turn to? I dont want to hear people say that I have to forgive myself because after all these years I still cant. Im scared that Ill never be able to because I know what I did was wrong. She can write I know what I did was wrong because God has written his law on every human heart (cf. Heb 8:10). But when becoming pregnant sets off a crisis, conscience can easily be drowned out by fears: fear of condemnation, of disappointing parents, of losing a boyfriend, of not being able to complete ones education, fear of raising a child alone or fear of what it may be like to raise a child with severe disabilities. It may seem impossible for a post-abortive woman to find healing and peace, much less hope and joy, as long as she is convinced that God will not forgive her sin of abortion. Ifas she believesshe will spend eternity in hell, forever separated from her child, how could she begin to forgive herself for casting aside her child, and forfeiting her present and future happiness? God has provided the solution to this misery and asks us to be catalysts to the solution. It is to believe in ones heart what Jesus has repeatedly said and shownI am love and mercy itself. Let no soul fear to draw near to me, even though its sins be as scarlet.1 I do not want to punish aching mankind, but I desire to heal it, pressing it to My merciful heart.2 The greater the misery of a soul, the greater its right to My mercy.3 Throughout salvation history, God has welcomed repentant sinners with special joy. Jesus concludes the parable of the lost sheep with these words: there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous people who have no need of repentance (Lk 15:7). Jesus goes out of his way to speak privately with the Samaritan woman at Jacobs well. She is an outcast, scorned for having had five husbands and now living with one who is not her husband. In a conversation marked by gentleness, truth and love, Jesus reveals her inherent dignity to her and confides that his mission is to save all men and women. She becomes at once an apostle to her village. (Jn 4:4-26) When Simon and other Pharisees were scandalized that Jesus allowed a sinful woman to bathe his feet with her tears while dining at Simons house, Jesus holds her up as an example of humility, gratitude and love: I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven, hence she has shown great love (Lk 7:36-50). Not even once does Jesus reject a humble contrite sinner. Blessed John Paul II envisioned that post-aborted women who have approached Jesus with humility and sorrow and who then experienced his merciful love will also become Jesus most eloquent evangelizers: With the friendly and expert help and advice of other people, and as a result of your own painful experience, you can be among the most eloquent defenders of everyone's right to life. Through your commitment to life, whether by accepting the birth of other children or by welcoming and caring for those most in need of someone to be close to them, you will become promoters of a new way of looking at human life. How can we be catalysts to the healing of women whove had abortions, to help all others believe in Gods merciful love so that they may find healing from any grave sin? Let us heed the advice of Pope Francis: Take up Gods offer . For God, we are not numbers, we are the most important thing to him; even if we are sinners, we are what is closest to his heart. let us be enveloped in the mercy of God; let us trust in his patience, which always gives us more time. Let us find the courage to [allow] ourselves [to] be loved by him and to encounter his mercy in the sacraments. We will feel his wonderful tenderness, we will feel his embrace, and we too will become more capable of mercy, patience, forgiveness and love. Susan E. Wills, Esq. is Assistant Director for Education & Outreach, USCCB Secretariat of Pro-Life Activities If you know of someone in need of confidential help to experience Gods forgiveness and healing, contact www.HopeAfterAbortion.org or 888-456-HOPE (4673).

Dear Parishioner, For over 50 years, Christ the King Church has been committed to serving Christ in our community. It is all of you, our people, who are the lifeline to our parish. Our parishs financial condition is shared with you every week, in our bulletin and periodically in reports from the finance committee. You may have noticed that we are experiencing a shortfall in revenue. Last year we operated at a loss of around $34,000. To prevent this from happening again, we have budgeted for a 7% increase in revenue for this current fiscal year. We continue to put forth every effort to control expenses. Weve faithfully made our minimum monthly mortgage payment ($9,500/month) to the Diocese. Weve also delayed non-essential capital projects in an attempt to help offset this shortage. While every little bit helps, this is not sustainable which is why we must ask for everyones assistance regarding weekly giving. Please prayerfully consider your ability to increase your weekly giving. If it is not possible to increase your giving, we understand and still hope you will pray for us in our endeavors. Keep in mind there are other ways to help: if not through Treasure, consider donating more of your Time or Talent as these are equally as important to the overall health of our parish. Also consider the following: Signing up for automatic donations via our parish web site Consider a special one-time donation to help us get back on plan Consider a stock or bequest donation Bring a friend, neighbor, or inactive Catholic to mass or parish event Many aspects of our church campus that we all enjoy today are a direct result of your past support. We have a beautiful Parish Life Center; an enlarged narthex area with kitchenette; appropriate dressing space for priests and deacons; better accessibility to parking; beautiful landscaping and wetland improvements; safe surroundings for all our children and parishioners; and even an elevator. If past support is any indication of our future, we will have a very bright outlook ahead. We know how blessed we are and how grateful we are for the generosity of our parishioners and visitors. Sincerely, Christ the King Finance Council Rick, Elaine, Lori, Pat, Javier, Brian

Fr. Peters Stewardship Goal With the help of Jesus and the example of our parishioners, we strive to focus on Gods generosity to us as we together in return, share our time, talent and treasure. What return can we make to the Lord for all He has given to us?
