PreInstallation
1. Reviewyourpackinglistandmakesureyouhavereceivedallthepartsbeforebeginninginstallation.
2. Ifyouaregoingtobeturningoffthewatertothehouseandyouhaveanelectricwaterheater,shutoff
thepowertothewaterheaterbeforebeginninginstallationincasewaterheaterisaccidentially
drained.
3. Pickasuitablelocationforyourchlorinationsystemonadrylevelspotwhereitwontbeexposedto
freezingtemperatures.Maximumlinepressureis100PSI.
4. Getallofyourplumbingpartstogetherbeforebeginninginstallation.Installationtypicallytakes1to5
hours.
5. Afterthesystemisinstalledandrunning,yourwatermaybediscolored,orfullofsedimentorrust,
particularlyifyouhaveolderorcorrodedpiping.
BestPracticesforInstallation
1. Seetypicalinstallationforwellwater.(seeFig1).
2. MakesurethattheStennerpumpturnsonandoffwiththewellpump,orifyouareusingaflowswitch,
plugintotheflowswitchsotheStennerpumpisactivatedbasedonwaterflow.
3. DonotcutthecordontheStennerpumpfordirectwiringtothepressureswitch.Itisbettertoinstalla
dedicatedwallreceptablethatiswiredtopoweronandoffwiththewellpump,unlessyouareusinga
flowswitch.

SeeFig2.Thewellpumpiscontrolledbythepressureswitch.AdedicatedoutletfortheStennerpumpis
installedandwiredsoitisenergizedwhenthewellpumpisenergized.Whenthewaterpressureinthepressure
tankdropsbelowthecutinpointonthepressureswitch,thewellpumpandmeteringpumpturnon.Aswater
ispumpedthroughthesystem,asmallamountofchlorineispumpedintothewaterbythechlorinemetering
pump.

TypicallytheStennerpumpiswallmounted,facingdown.AsoutlinedintheStennerinstallationmanual,the
OptionalSpillRecoveryisrecommended,whereyoupunchoutoneoftheindentedholesattheendofpump
assemblyandinsertalengthoftubing(includedwithpump)sothatiftheStennerpumptubefails,the
chlorinesolutionwilldrainbackintothesolutiontankinsteadofleakingontothefloor.
Asthewaterflowsintothecontacttank,thechlorineisthoroughlymixedinthewater,allowingcontacttimeto
killanybacteriaandoxidizeiron,manganeseorhydrogensulfidegas.Precipitatedoxidizedparticlesofiron,
sulfidesandmanganesearefilteredoutofthewaterbythegreensandplusfiltersystem.
AdjusttheStennerpumpandthesolutionstrengthsothereisafreechlorineresidualof0.2to1.0ppmafter
thecontacttankbeforefiltration.
Regardingoptionalvacuumbreaker:thecontacttankcanwithstandalinepressureof75PSI,butcannottake
anyvacuum.Ifthecontacttankisdrainedorifthewellsystemlosespressure,andwateraccidentallydrains
backdownthewell,orisdrainedaftercontacttankandahosebiborfaucetisnotopenedtoallowairintothe
tank,avacuummayoccurinsidethetank.Thiswillcausecontacttankfailure,soasmall1/2"or3/4"vacuum
breakerisrecommendedtopreventthisrareoccurence.

Thegoalofaproperlyfunctioningchlorineinjectionsystemistohaveafreechlorineresidualof0.2to1.0
ppmaftersufficientcontacttime,beforeanycarbonfiltersystem.Orifnocarbonfilterorotherde
chlorinationisused,tohaveafreechlorineresidualof0.2to1.0ppmattheendofthedistributionsystem
orfurthestpointintheplumbing.
ThiscanbeaccomplishedbyadjustingthechlorinebleachsolutionstrengthandsettingtheStennerFeed
RateControlDialuntilyouachievethedesiredresidual.
Indeterminingyourmeteringpumpssettingsandsolutionstrength,keepinmindthatitsbesttomakeup
freshsolutiononceevery1to3months.Thechlorinesolutionlosesstrengthasitages,andissensitiveto
heatandlight.Generally,keepsolutiontankoutofthesunandusefreshsolutionregularlyforbestresults.
StepOne:Determineflowrateofthewaterstreamyouareinjectinginto,inGallonsPerMinute(GPM)
1.Openanyhosebiborfaucetuntilpumpturnson.
2.Closehosebiborfaucetandletpumpfilluppressuretankuntilitturnsoff.
3.Usinga1or5gal.bucket,openfaucet,collectandmeasureallwaterdischargeduntilpumpturnson.
4.Whenpumpturnson,immediatelyclosefaucetandstarttimingpumpcycle.
5.Whenpumpturnsoff,recordpumpcycletimetorefillpressuretankinseconds.
6.DividethenumberofgallonscollectedinStep3bythenumberofsecondsinStep5.
7.MultiplytheanswerfromStep6by60.
8.TheanswerinStep7istheaveragepumpingcapacityofthepumpingallonsperminute(GPM).
StepTwo:HowMuchChlorineShouldBeInjected?Determinethepartspermillionofchlorineyouare
tryingtoachieveinpartspermillion(PPM).
Chlorineisinjectedinpartspermillion('ppm')whichisthesameassayingmilligramsperliter('mg/L').The
amountofchlorinetoadddependsonthechlorinedemandofthewater.Chlorinedemandistheamount
ofvariouscontaminantsinthewaterthatcombinewiththechlorineafterthechlorinehasbeeninjectedand
sufficientcontacttimehasoccurred.Afterthechlorinehascombinedwiththevarioussubstancessuchas
bacteria,iron,manganeseandodor,somelevelofuncombinedorfreechlorinewillexist.Thegoalisto
havesomesmallamountoffreechlorine,usuallyaround0.2to0.4ppmoffreechlorine,uptoamaximumof
1.0ppmoffreechlorine.
Forbacteriayouwanttoinject12ppmofchlorinewithapproximately10minutesofcontacttime.Ifthe
wateriscolderthan50F(10C)and/orthepHishigherthan7.5youmayneedlongercontacttimeorahigher
residual.

Foreachpartpermillionofironormanganesegenerallyyouwanttoinject1ppmofchlorine.Foreach1.0
ppmofhydrogensulfidegas(whichcausestherotteneggsmellinwater)youwanttoinject2to3ppmof
chlorine.Sosayyouhavebacteriaand2.0ppmofiron.Forourexamplehere,wewillassumeyouwantto
inject3ppmofchlorine.
StepThree:Determinewhatsolutionstrengthofbleachtouse
Householdbleachisapproximately5%chlorine;poolchlorineis10to12%.5%isthesameassaying50,000
partspermillion(PPM)and10%isthesameassaying100,000PPM.
Regardingthesolutionstrength:Ifyoudilutethebleachbyusing1gallonsofpurewaterto1gallonof
householdbleach,youendupwithsolutionstrengthofapproximately2.5%or25,000ppm.Inotherwords,
householdbleachhasasolutionstrengthof50,000ppm,andifyoudiluteitwith1gallonofwater,youend
upwithsolutionstrengthof25,000ppm.
Regardingsettingtheoutputofthemeteringpump:Youcanvarytheapplieddosageofchlorinebyadjusting
thechlorinebleachsolutionstrengthandsettingtheStennerFeedRateControlDialuntilyouachievethe
desiredresidual.
Afteryouusetheformulabelowtocomputethegallonsperdayadjustthepumptoendupwiththedesired
applieddosage.Theformulaissimple,youonlyhaveto:
MultiplytheFlowRate(ingallonsperminute)timestheAppliedDosageinPartsPerMillionDesiredtimes
1440.ThendividebytheSolutionStrengthinPPMthatisbeingused.
Example:Assumethatyouhaveawellpumpthathasaflowrateof12gallonsperminute(12GPM)and
thatyouwanttoinject3.0ppmofchlorineintothewater.Youhavedecidedtouseasolutionstrengthof
25,000ppmor1gallonof5%bleachtoonegallonofpurifiedoratleastsoftenedwater.Thereare1440
minutesin24hourperiod,andtheformulawilltellyouhowmanygallonsofchlorineyouwilluseforevery
24hoursthewellpumpruns.
Theformulais:12GPMx3.0PPMx1440andthendividedby25,000=2.07GallonsPerDay
Thismeansthatyouneedameteringpumpthathasanoutputof2.0gallonsperday.Youcanusethe
Stenner45MHP2,whichhasamaximumoutputof3gallonsperday,andsetthepumpatthe66%level,since
2is66%of3,themaximumoutputofthepump.Theoreticallythiswillgiveyouanappliedchlorinedoseof
3.0ppm,andyoucanadjustitlateronceyoudetermineyouractualfreechlorineresidual.TheStennerpump
hasaFeedRateControlDialwithnumbersfrom1to10.Ifyousetthepumpat6orbetween6and7,youwill
havethedesiredadjustmentof66%.
Yourwellpumpmightrunfor1houraday,soatthisrateyouwoulduse2.0gallonsofyourchlorinebleach
solutionevery24hoursthepumpruns.Itisbettertoaddmoresolutioneveryonetotwomonthsasthe
solutioncanloseitspotencyovertime.
Whateveryourinitialsettingbesuretotestfortotalandfreechlorineandthenadjustthepumpand/orthe
solutionstrengthtoachieveyourdesiredfreechlorineresidualinyourpiping.

waterfromareverseosmosissystem,oratleastsoftenedwater.Donotuse
untreatedwellwater.
Maintenance:Checkfreechlorineresidualatleastoncepermonthandadjust
Stennerpumpand/orsolutionstrengthifneeded.SeetheStennermanual
forroutinemaintenance.Changethepumptubeevery13years.
Winterizing:donotlettheStennerpumportubingfreeze.Ifyouneedto
winterize,drainthechlorinesolutiontankanddiscardchlorinesolution.
Placethesuctionofthepumpintoabucketofcleanwaterandallowthe
pumptorununtiltheStennerpumpisfreeofanychlorinesolution.
Removethesuctionfromthewater,andallowthepumptopumpdry.
