ENGINEERING EXCELLENCE Energy

Promoting and safeguarding the quality of life is, in many aspects, based on the development and provision of fossil and renewable energy sources and, in particular, on the efficient and environmentally compatible conversion of these energy sources into electricity and heat.

In the course of continuously extending the scope of its activities in the past 35 years, ILF has gained broad technical expertise and know-how, enabling the firm to perform complex planning, design and consulting services for international clients in the oil, gas and water sectors.

In order to meet the high expectations of our customers, we pool the scientific competence and innovative capacity from all our disciplines for the project in question: power plant technology, construction engineering, environmental engineering, information technology and electrical engineering. ILF gives top priority to developing sustainable and economical solutions for its customers. Our principles include reliability and functionality, safety, strict adherence to deadlines, as well as independence from manufacturers and suppliers interests. Eco-friendliness and economic efficiency ensure the sustainability of the project in question. ILF strives to provide optimum solutions for its customers.

Energy, the key to prosperity and p r o g r e s s

On account of its long-standing interdisciplinary capabilities, ILF is increasingly becoming involved in the development and implementation of power plant projects as designer and consultant. ILFs customers rely on the companys comprehensive experience in all stages of a project involving analysis of all potential energy sources.

From the source to the consumer

ILF understands that the services we offer in the energy sector are integral components of a value chain. Starting with the development, processing and transport of energy sources such as gas, oil, water or biomass, through the conversion into thermal or electric energy, this value chain includes the production of drinking water from integrated power and sea water desalination plants. The advantages afforded by our broad interdisciplinary structure become particularly evident wherever such integrated plants feed not only into energy transmission and distribution systems, but also where the drinking water produced is fed into longdistance transmission systems and urban distribution networks.

Thermal p o w e r p l a n t s a n d s e a w a t e r desalination plants

n Generation of electric and thermal energy
Modern power plants running on fossil fuels transform the primary energy sources, such as coal, oil, gas and residual materials from the petrochemical industry, into heat, steam or electric energy. In international markets, energy sources, transformation processes and investors vie for profitability. Steam power plants with boiler firing systems and cogeneration plants compete with gas turbine plants and combined gas and steam turbine plants. Innovative technology is important to ensure the best possible utilisation, efficiency and profitability of competing power plant projects. When designing such plants, the long-term availability of the chosen fuel is investigated and emphasis is placed on the optimum utilisation of the fuel. Furthermore, fuels such as oil and coal contain different amounts of contaminants such as sulphur, chloride and heavy metals, resulting in differing emission spectra because of their combustion characteristics. Exhaust gas purification techniques must be applied that simultaneously meet the requirements of environmental legislation and the principles of profitability. Thermal power plants such as gas turbine facilities for oilfields and compressor stations are among the projects that ILF has been involved in since the inception of its business activities. While extending its portfolio in the oil and gas sector, ILF has also become involved in other types of power plants with constantly increasing capacities. ILF offers its customers services such as technical and economic pre-feasibility studies, tender design, as well as project management for these power plants.

n Integrated power generation and sea water desalination plants

Integrated power generation and sea water desalination plant projects are increasingly tendered by government institutions as Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) contracts and/or as Independent Water & Power Projects (IWPP). The bidders are generally international investor groups. Among other things, the success of such projects depends on choosing the appropriate process technology, and in this area ILF plans and designs individually in line with project requirements, considering available thermal (MSF, MED) and membrane processes (RO, ED, NF). This includes the engineering design of raw water treatment pro cesses, post-treatment and/or conditioning of product water in line with WHO standards. ILF develops power plant projects and sea water desalination plants, offers consultancy services for privatisation projects and assesses the technical and economic viability of investment projects in the international energy industry. ILF is also a capable partner for tasks such as modernisation, rehabilitation and retrofitting to increase capacity, as well as for the safe and environmentally friendly decommissioning of energy generating plants.

Utilisation of biomass as energy source

n R enewable raw materials provide heat, steam and electricity
The utilisation of renewable energy sources contributes significantly to the prevention of climate change. The use of biomass, in particular wood, as a renewable energy source is gaining importance especially in supplying commercial users with process steam and electric energy. Biomass district heating plants generate electric and thermal power and at the same time utilise the natural resources very efficiently. Industrial wood waste- and wood chip-fired plants achieve optimum energy efficiency and minimum flue gas emissions. This excellent combination is guaranteed by using state-of-the-art plant components in the field of boiler systems and flue gas purification. Seen against this backdrop, production progress in forestry as well as falling wood prices favour the use of this energy source over fossil fuels. Due to its interdisciplinary organisation, ILF is able to provide top-quality in-house design services. The experience acquired through successful project execution guarantees maximum effectiveness, quality and functionality.

n I LFs scope of services includes:

Data acquisition and evaluation for the dimensioning of the plant Study of alternatives in the course of the process engineering concept for the plant Calculation of emissions and optimisation of the emission behaviour under different operating conditions Plant engineering design, including all process, mechanical, electrical and control engineering aspects Architectural and construction engineering Design of infrastructure components (storage space and logistics) Start-up and acceptance tests Permit application procedure and permitting procedure

n A n elemental force of nature harnessed by man

The growing worldwide energy demand and increasing consumption of fossil fuels is counterbalanced by the sustainable production of electricity using the natural energy of flowing water, especially when viewed against the backdrop of climate protection. The attractiveness of hydropower derives from its In areas where high static head is not available, low-head schemes or run-of-river plants can be designed, generating electric energy with less head but larger flow rates. Again, depending on the conditions and requirements, small- and large-size plants are planned.

n I LFs scope of services includes:

Production of master plans to identify economically and ecologically sustainable hydropower plant sites Studies of alternatives Socio-economic analyses Geological and geotechnical consulting services Hydrological analyses Steady-state and transient hydraulics Project design of hydropower plants, including electro-mechanical equipment and infrastructure Production of documents for environmental impact assessment Design works in compliance with nature and landscape conservation laws

renewability and environmental compatibility, which can be maintained through careful planning and management. Depending on local conditions, hydropower plants come in various sizes and designs. In mountainous terrain the high available static head is used by designing high-pressure power plants of varying dimensions, depending on regional conditions and requirements: from hydroelectric power stations integrated into the water supply system, small- and mediumsized hydropower plants for regional energy supply, to large diversion power plants. Combinations with reservoirs are also feasible, making it possible to balance seasonal inflow fluctuations. Pumped storage power plants are used to even out daily peak loads. Engineering activities for hydropower plants are complex and require a number of specialist disciplines, all of which are available within ILF. When planning and executing projects, ILF places great emphasis on economic sustainability, sensible utilisation of natural resources and acceptance by society.

n S patial distance and load behaviour: a challenge

The site of a thermal power plant is ideally located at the interface of different connections to the energy consumers. Another decisive factor for the location is a suitable infrastructure for the chosen primary energy source.

n I ndividual system concepts: solutions for success

ILF examines, designs and implements all components of energy transport and energy supply. This includes the new construction and rehabilitation of high-voltage and medium-voltage switching stations, overhead lines and underground cable sections in the respective transmission and distribution systems

Electric transmission and distribution systems

The installation of hydropower plants is governed by hydrographic boundary conditions, social aspects and settlement geography, as well as by criteria for preserving forests and biodiversity. In all cases the safe transport of electricity to the consumers requires complex system design solutions. This applies both to the energy suppliers overhead power transmission lines and to industrial supply systems, which often place great demands on the system design on account of the special load characteristics. including the necessary civil works, communications systems and power systems. In the oil and gas industry, these systems are customised to meet project-specific requirements of uninterruptible power supply and based on future-oriented functionality. ILFs engineering services focus on finding optimum economic and technical solutions for mainly industrial clients.
