TIME AND WORK-II

Formulae:
The basic assumptions we have while solving the problems on time and work
are
(i) Total work is always taken as 1 unit.
(ii) The work done by a person is uniform throughout the working time.
For e.g. if a person does a work in T days then
(a) the persons T - day work = 1
(b) The one day work of the person =
T
1

(iii) If two persons can alone finish a work in x-days and y-days respectively, then
together they can finish the work in

y x
y x
days.
(iv) If two persons together can do the work in x-days and one of them alone can do it
in y days then the other person alone can do it in

x y
y x
days.
(v) If three persons A, B and C can finish a work separately in
2 1
, t t and
3
t days
respectively and the work is finished after A works on it for
1
d -days, B for
2
d days
and C for
3
d days.

work in 12 days, nine men can do the same piece of work in nine days and six women
can do the same piece of work in 14 days. Who are the most efficient?
1) Boys 2) Girls 3) Women 4) Men 5) Both men and
women
ANSWER: 1
7 girls can do the work in 13 days, so 1 girl can do the work in 7 13 = 91 days
Similarly A boy can do the work in 6 12 = 72 days,
A man can do the work in 9 9 = 81 days
A woman can do the work in 6 14 = 84 days
Since the boy is taking the least number of days, the boys group is most
efficient.
