BATH,Maine(NNS)GeneralDynamicsBathIronWorkssuccessfullylaunchedtheNavy'sfirst ZumwaltclassdestroyerOct.28attheirBath,Maineshipyard. ThefutureUSSZumwalt(DDG1000)willbetheleadshipoftheNavy'snewestdestroyerclass, designedforlittoraloperationsandlandattack. TheshipbeganitstranslationfromBathIronWorks'landlevelconstructionfacilitytoafloatingdry dockonFriday.Onceloadedintothedrydock,thedockwasfloodedandtheshipwasremovedfrom itsspeciallydesignedcradle.BylateMonday,thedockhadbeenfloodedandtheshipwasfloatedoff andtiedtoapierontheKennebecRiver. "ThisisthelargestshipBathIronWorkshaseverconstructedandtheNavy'slargestdestroyer.The launchwasunprecedentedinbothitssizeandcomplexity,"saidCapt.JimDowney,theZumwalt classprogrammanagerfortheNavy'sProgramExecutiveOffice,Ships."Duetometiculousplanning andexecution,theoperationwentverysmoothly.I'mextremelypleasedwiththeresultsand applaudthecombinedeffortsoftheNavyindustryteam." ConstructionbeganonDDG1000inFebruary2009,andtheNavyanditsindustrypartnershave workedtomaturetheship'sdesignandreadytheirindustrialfacilitiestobuildthisadvancedsurface combatant.Zumwaltiscurrentlymorethan87percentcomplete,andtheshipbuilderwillcontinue remainingconstructionworkonthehullpriortoplanneddeliverylatenextyear. Becauseofthecomplexityofthefirstofclassship,theNavywillperformatwophasedelivery process.BathIronWorkswilldelivertheshipitselftotheNavyinlate2014.Upondelivery,the Navywillthenconductcombatsystemsactivation,testsandtrials,toincludemultipleunderway periods.Theshipisexpectedtoreachitsinitialoperatingcapabilityin2016. Theship,thefirstofthreeZumwaltclassdestroyers,willprovideindependentforwardpresenceand deterrence,supportspecialoperationsforcesandoperateaspartofjointandcombined expeditionaryforces.TheNavyhasincorporatedmanynewtechnologiesintotheship'sunique tumblehomehull,includinganallelectricintegratedpowersystemandanAdvancedGunSystem, designedtofirerocketpowered,precisionprojectiles63nauticalmiles. Theshapeofthesuperstructureandthearrangementofitsantennassignificantlyreducetheship's radarcrosssection,makingtheshiplessvisibletoenemyradaratsea.Thedesignalsoallowsfor optimalmanningwithastandardcrewsizeof130andanaviationdetachmentof28Sailorsthereby decreasinglifecycleoperationsandsupportcosts. TheleadshipandclassarenamedinhonorofformerChiefofNavalOperationsAdm.ElmoR."Bud" ZumwaltJr.,whoservedaschiefofnavaloperationsfrom19701974. AsoneoftheDefenseDepartment'slargestacquisitionorganizations,PEOShips,anaffiliatedPEOof theNavalSeaSystemsCommand,isresponsibleforexecutingthedevelopmentandprocurementof allmajorsurfacecombatants,amphibiousships,specialmissionandsupportshipsandspecial warfarecraft.
