[15 secs.] In International News The European Unions border patrol agency FRONTEX is still trying to rescue the African immigrants that were on the boat that CAUGHT on fire and sank off the coast of the Italian island of Lampedusa last Tuesday. The ship was PACKED with African immigrants among them CHILDREN and pregnant women. The immigrants were FLEEING poverty and war in Sudan and Somalia, and were brought across the Mediterranean from Libya by a Tunisian smuggler. 1 [30 secs.]

In National News

A teacher at a Nevada middle school was FATALLY SHOT by a STUDENT who was also killed apparently by a self-inflicted wound. According to LAW ENFORCEMENT two other students were CRITICALLY WOUNDED.

The shooting occurred on the campus of SPARKS MIDDLE SCHOOL in a suburb of Reno on Monday before the start of classes.

A witness reports SEEING the victim TRYING to persuade the shooter to give up the gun.

Tonight the wounded students are being treated at a local hospital.2 [30 secs.]

Human interest The WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION is INVESTIGATING almost TWO THOUSAND cases of a possible Polio outbreak in Syria. Syrian officials are STILL waiting confirmation that what they are DEALING with is in fact polio. They are planning mass immunizations to try to contend the outbreak. The results from the World Health Organization investigations are on the way. IN THE MEAN TIME the organization has issued an alert to Syrias neighbors. 3[30 secs.]

And FINALLY.. In Sports News For decades, Cuban athletes have defected at international competition or on risky journeys in RAFTS and speed boats. Well.. those days could now become into an end. Cubas Communist Party newspaper Granma reported on Friday that Cuban athletes would be ALLOWED to SIGN professional contracts and PLAY in foreign leagues. Since the summer, Cuba has JOINED a semi-pro international boxing series. It allowed 10 boxers to TURN PRO in Mexico. 4[35 secs.]
