Our annual Scholastic Book Fair will be held during the week of November 25th to 29th, 2013. On Wednesday (27th) the fair will be open until 7pm. Parents/Guardians can purchase gift certificates from Sharon in the Library. They are available in amounts of $5, $10, $20 and $50. We are looking for your continued support for our book(s) fundraiser!!

Kwe! I would like to take this opportunity to thank the students and staff for this wonderful experience as the Acting Vice-Principal. As I venture in completing my Masters in Administration and Leadership, I look forward to one day working in this area. It has been a great experience working closely with Mr. Crawford and would like to take this opportunity to say Thank you! I would also like to express my gratitude to everyone in administration, teachers and E.A.s for their support and encouragement. October was a very busy month, what with trips to the pumpkin patch and corn maze. Also, some of our students had the opportunity to go on a moose hunt with the Wellness Program. It is so nice to see so many connections being made to help our students learn, and become, proud Mikmaq community members. On November 1st our staff will be participating in a Professional Development Day. Then on November 7th, we will be honouring our Veterans with a Remembrance Day ceremony at 11:00 am. Please note that community members are welcomed to attend the ceremony. Finally just a reminder to parents and guardians that the weather has changed, and with this cold weather upon us, we would like to remind our students to wear proper clothing and footwear. Welalioq

The primary students have been enjoying the many activities that we do in class; we have been very busy reading, writing and learning our new sounds. The students finished the Math unit on patterns and enjoyed looking for patterns everywhere. We will be starting the Adopt a Library reading challenge next week so please be sure to record all the books that you and your child read together to count with our class total. The primary students had an excellent time at the Riverbreeze Pumpkin patch; they each picked their own pumpkins and toured through the maze. I was very proud of how well behaved our students were and I'm looking forward to more adventures with this great group of kids! I would like to give a special thank you to Lennex Robinson for being a very kind and considerate student this month and special congratulations to Stephen Michael for being a great thinker this month. Our class would like to wish Kaicee and Lennex a very happy birthday for October and Kylie and Emily a very Happy Birthday in November :)

The Grade 2's have been working hard this first term. November has rolled in quickly and so has the cold weather so please remind your child/children to dress warm. This month we will start recording all the books we read at school and at home. Please help your child to fill out their reading log sheet by having them read nightly. Remembrance Day will be the major topic that we will be discussing in the first few weeks of November. The students will think of many ways to thank veterans for their hard work, bravery and sacrifices. The students will pick one way they themselves can thank a veteran. Remember to wear your poppies in November!

Grade ONE

October was a very busy month for us at LSK. We started off the month with Fire Safety week, which lead us into a good Thanksgiving feast. Treaty Day events were a success this year again. The Grade ones really enjoyed celebrating and learning about their culture. Celebrating Nitap Day (Friendship Day) was something new this year. The grade ones loved being able to see other Mikmaq schools, and the activities they were doing for Nitap Day. The grade Ones wore their Nitap Day shirts proudly. The pumpkin patch was a lot of fun, the kids loved the maze and the bouncy pillow and of course the pig race. Everyone got their own pumpkin to take home and carve. Remember to be safe and fun trick or treating. We would like to wish a Happy Birthday to Isaac Marr on November 11th and Makara Gould on November 24th November, 2013

Grade THREE

Its hard to believe we have completed two months of school already. Its been a very busy month with assessment, fun fairs, events and everyday learning and development. The grade3s are settling in and working hard on all their outcomes. The students have already shown a lot of progress- way to go guys. October brought the Nitap Day, Treaty Day, The Fall Fun Fair and a trip to the pumpkin patch- quite the eventful month! We like it best when we are busy. We have been studying Mikmaq History this month- we enjoy learning about the history of our people and culture. We also enjoyed a special visit from Chief Copage who came and shared a story with us. We are continuing to develop our number sense and place value understanding in math. We are learning about plants in science. We having been learning to sing and dance to some old songs Ms Page 2

Foster is teaching us. We look forward to preparing for Remembrance Day and then Xmas concert- time flies when you are having fun!

Grade FOUR A

October was a great month. We went to the River Breeze Farm, had a great success at our Fall Fair, celebrated Halloween and Thanksgiving, worked on our Kitchen Safety and Remembrance Day posters and completed our units on Numbers. We have practiced our mental math, addition & subtraction and number sense with the grade 4 and 5?s. The grade six students worked on factors, prime numbers, number more than a million, integers and order of operations. In November, the grade six class will be studying decimals, while the 4 and 5 classes will be practicing multiplication & division. This upcoming month has lots of great things to look forward to. We are currently preparing for our Cultural Day activities. Our students will be teaching the grade 4 and 5 classes from Shubenacadie Elementary about our culture. Students are broken up into expert groups and will be sharing their knowledge. We have also begun filling shoe boxes to be shipped to third world countries. The boxes will be Christmas gifts to children who are less fortunate to us. If you are interested in helping us, you are welcome to come see us. We have extra boxes. This is a great way to share during the holidays. Thus far we have raised about $1500 towards our trip to Keji. We are about half way to our goal. The Chase the Ace bank is about $1000. If you are interested in buying a ticket, please see us or one of the students in grades 4, 5 or 6. There were two winners of the Lotto 649 draw. We would like to thank everyone who has helped us fundraise thus far. We greatly appreciated your contributions. Word Problem Uncle Henry was driving to Halifax when he spotted a big green gorilla on the side of the road. He screeched to a stop, jumped out of his car. He saw the outline of a number on the gorilla. He couldn't quite see the number, but he knew it was a 4 digit number.

And 1) He remembered seeing a number 1. 2) In the hundred's place he remembers the number is 3 times the number in the thousand's place. 3) He said the number in the one's place is 4 times the number in the ten's place. 4) Finally he said the number 2 is sitting in the thousand's place. Grade FOUR B

Grade 4 Hawks Fall has fell and students have gotten into a great working groove! Grade 4s started Guided Reading groups in October and they are enjoying the range of learning centers in which they have been taking part. Keep up the good work! Students have been mixing in a bit of business with pleasure by spending the day at the corn maze and pumpkin patch at River Breeze Farm on October 24th. We had a great time getting lost in the maze and it was hilarious watching all the kids try to carry the biggest pumpkins; if they couldn't carry it, it wasn't making it back to LSK! The fundraising for our end of year trip to Keji continues to be a success and we thank all of our coordinators and supporters. Stay tuned for our new offers and contests! Now that students have trekked the streets for Halloween goodies, they are looking forward to learning more about why we celebrate Remembrance Day. Students have already created posters commemorating our veterans and how they fought for our freedoms. We look forward to meeting many of Indian Brook's brave Veterans, both young and old, who have fought in the name of peace. Over and Out!

Grade FIVE/SIX

The end of October is quickly approaching and the grade 5 and 6s have been hard at work. We have begun our unit on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory with many fun activities to be completed. Students have jumped right into their centers and have been working very hard in Guided Reading, Silent Reading, Writers Workshop and their Mini Lesson of the week work. Science is super fun with the grade 4s learning about Light, the grade 5s learning about Properties and States of Matter and the grade 6s learning about Electricity. Lots of hands on experiments will be happening in the classroom. The students in grades 4, 5 and 6 have been working very hard on their fundraising efforts. As many of you know they are selling Chase the Ace Tickets for $1.00 each and every week we have a draw. So far no one has found the elusive Ace of Spades and our bank and fundraising pot keeps growing. Thanks to everyone who has supported us so far. Also, we are anxiously waiting for a winner to our 649 fundraiser! Finally, the grade 4, 5, and 6s will be selling tickets on a Christmas Basket full of great decorations, crafting supplies and much more. We cant wait for our end of the year trip to Keji National Park. Finally, please enjoy a story by one of the grade 5 and 6 students! My Favorite Holiday By Mackalen White My favorite holiday is Christmas because I like it when Santa Claus brings us presents. Last year I got a new Xbox slim. It came with a new game called Kinnect sports. I also got 4 new xbox games: Gears of War 2, Call of duty 4, Halo 3 and Black ops 1.

Grade SEVEN

Mrs. Macs English Corner English Grade 7 During the month of October we will be finishing up our unit entitled Stand Up; which talks about standing up for our rights and how we all can contribute to society with acts of citizenship! We also are beginning our novel study. Our novel for this term is called Freak the Mighty. Freak the Mighty is a heartwarming story that concentrates on themes of anti-bullying. I encourage you to follow along with this novel as we are reading it in class, you will not be disappointed! English Grade 8 I really love the Global Issues Unit in our Grade 8 Literacy Book. I actually am sorry to be ending this unit because Globalization and global issues are something that affects us all. This term so far we have had really engaging conversations about human rights such as child labour and equality for all ages. We also examined issues such as clean air and clean water. We will shortly be starting a novel study with my favorite book of all times: The Outsiders! Although it was written many years ago the Outsiders is a timeless story that deals with themes of friendship and self-realization. English Grade 9 We are ending our Nelson Literacy 9 Unit on Courage. In this unit we have read many essays, short stories and articles that deal with people who had courage to make a difference in society. We also read supplementary short stories from more of the classical authors. We are focusing on improving our essay skills and will be shortly moving on to a novel study of Catching Fire. The junior high students have been enhancing their mental math skills this month by learning various strategies for the addition of numbers such as compensation and break up and bridge. Students have also been learning about many concepts related to numbers and operations with a focus on place value, decimals and percents. Math Problem of the Month

Greetings to everyone! It is hard to believe that we are already at the end of October! Time has been flying in my Math and Science classes. In Math 10, we are currently investigating Areas and Volumes of shapes using the imperial and metric systems. In Math 11 we are using Matrices to solve systems of equations.

And in Science 10, we have moved into the Chemistry Unit, where the students are successfully naming and writing formulas for Ionic compounds. This year I will be running the Robotics Team. This is a first for LSK, and if anyone is interested, please let me know. I think this could be a very rewarding experience to everyone involved. Finally I would like to send out a thank you to Amy Maloney and Jonathan Crawford for doing a great job this year in dealing with the staff and students in High School. I appreciate the support! The intent is for the students to find something they care deeply about and deliver a five minute performance explaining why they feel the way they do. Boo! Hey kids its Mr. Mac here. Well its hard to believe that we are now entering in to the month of November. Time flies when youre having fun. Previously in Law 12 students have finished units in Defining Crime, Actus Reus, Involvement in crime and the investigation process. Upcoming units include mental states and the trial process. In Learning Strategies 11 students have covered, Meyers Briggs test and the importance of testing, Short story strategies as well as Chain of Events strategies. Finally students in Tourism 11 have worked on and completed Nova Scotia Doers and Dreamers project, Resort and Restaurant project and most recently a project on Dark Tourism. Well thats it for me and my two brothers named Darryl. Happy Halloween!

Kwe! Indian Brook members. This term I have the pleasure to teach most High School Students, in the following three courses: Canadian Families 12, Mikmaq Studies 10, and Visual Arts 10. Canadian Families is a university/ College prep course and based on the social sciences research methods. In Mi'kmaq Studies 10 the students are all working on projects that reflect Mi'kmaq Culture, for example, Making Luskie, and making moccasins some others are doing power-point presentations on important people of our nation, Annie Mae (Pictou) Aquash, and Glooscap legends, dancing and drumming this month. Visual Arts class seems to be the students favorite course, as they do learn to use various tools and styles of sketching and painting, and history or art. Currently we did practice carving skills on pumpkins, which the students in grade 10 are doing for decorations for the school Halloween dance.

Hello from the Resource Room! Did you know that October is ADHD Month on the Mental Health Calendar? Here are some interesting facts from the Center for AHDH Awareness Canada to get you thinking: ADHD is a genuine neurobiological disorder that was clinically observed more than 100 years ago. All of the major medical associations and government health agencies recognize this fact because the scientific evidence is overwhelming. ADHD occurs in 5 to 12% of school age children world-wide and is the most common mental health disorder in children. 80% maintain the diagnosis into adolescence and 60% are still affected by core symptoms in adulthood. Research shows that ADHD is most likely inherited and parenting styles do not cause ADHD. There are three sub-types types of ADHD: (1)

November will be a busy month for me as I prepare to host our annual Scholastic Book Fair. After a great deal of inquires and requests from the community, I have decided to host the Fall Book Fair. We will NO longer host the Spring Book Fair after March Break. I am hoping that everyone will come out to support our book fundraiser on November 25th to 29th. It would be a great chance for many to purchase some early Christmas presents. Speaking of Christmas if any parents are interested in purchasing gift certificates, I will be selling them immediately. Production Technology 12 and Family Studies 7 - 8 - 9. I would first like to say that I am very proud of my students and their accomplishments so far this term. The Production Technology class, with the help of Velvet Paul, received a grant to start their Production & Manufacturing enterprise. The first job they had was to produce large poppies for the power poles for Remembrance Day to honour our community veterans. This job completed they worked on a bench design and produced benches for the community placing then at the Band Office, church, and grave yard. The students donated all these projects to their community Indian Brook. In Family studies the students are learning safe food handling, kitchen care, safety, cleaning, and how to follow the directions to make and cook the desired dish they want to cook. To all our students stay in school, and continue to do your best.
