Erin Rasco Technology Enhanced Lesson Plan-Introduction to the Immune System 9th Grade Living Environment EDU-5170A-Dr.

Vega 1) Standards: a. Content area: The Living Environment: Standard 5.2C: The immune system protects against antigens associated with pathogenic organisms or foreign substances and some cancers. 5.2D: Some white blood cells engulf invaders. Others produce antibodies that attack them or mark them for killing. Some specialized white blood cells will remain, able to fight off subsequent invaders of the same kind. b. Technology standards-ISTE standard 1b. Create original works as a means of personal or group expression and 1c. Use models and simulations to explore complex systems and issues 2) Objectives: a. Content Area-(1) Students should be able to explain why animals need an immune system. (2) Students should be able to identify basic components of the immune system and their roles: macrophages, cell mediated and humoral immunity, helper T cells, killer T cells, B cells (plasma and memory B cells), antigen, antibody, pathogen. b. Technology-Students should be able to learn complex systems through a step by step fun and interactive game. Additionally, students will then use powerpoint to depict this sequence of events in a flow chart style. 3) Introduce the Learning Activity: a. My class will be set up with an agenda on the board when students walk in. The agenda for today will be: 1) Bell Ringer, 2) Class discussion/brief lecture, 3) Online

Immune Invaders games, 4) Create powerpoint for steps, 6) Present powerpoint, and 7) Bell closer b. The motivator behind this lesson is that the online game is fun and interactive. It teaches the steps of the establishment of immunity in a fun and engaging way that is logical.

4) Provide Info- My lecture, as always will begin with a bell ringer. The question for today will be: What is one of the bodies nonspecific defenses against pathogens? This is based off reviewing the prior lesson where they learned nonspecific immunity and the basic definitions of immune system related terms (antibody, pathogen, antibiotics). Im going to use the clicker card way of asking this question. This is a card with A-D written on it. When I ask the question, students are expected to hold up the card with their choice facing me. This allows me to quickly see where students stand in terms of getting the answer right while not being influenced by their peers or without certain students calling out answers. Using this method, I can see quickly if students absorbed the last lesson and are all on the same page when beginning this lesson. I will consider students on track if 80% or more get it correct. I will then start a brief lecture on the immune system. The powerpoint is adapted from: www.vusd.org/webpages/rnordell/biology.cfm?subpage=21344. It begins with a brief review of innate immunity. Then it outlines the different branches of the immune system and the basic roles of some cells important in the immune response. This is not meant to be a comprehensive lecture, it is a set up for the basic background required to understand the game and to review and enforce the previous lesson. The game does a good job of

establishing the steps of immunity, I just want to provide some background knowledge on the different cell types and branches of the immune system.

5) Provide practice- Students will go to: http://www.biomanbio.com/GamesandLabs/Physiogames/conflictimmunity.html . This is an online interactive game that describes the different cells and their functions in the immune system. It then walks them through the steps of establishing cell mediated and humoral immunity by interacting with the student. The student gets to move cells around, attack invaders and cause different cell types to interact with each other. In a topic that can be as muddled as the different branches of the immune system, this game does a good job of laying it all out in an easy to follow way. I will walk around while students are playing this game to ensure that students understand, are on track and to answer questions. As they are doing so, they will be instructed to start thinking about the steps of how immunity is established.

6) Provide knowledge of results- After the conclusion of this interactive game, I will ask the students to use powerpoint to set up a brief presentation of the order of either humoral or cell mediated immunity. This will just be a powerpoint with each slide representing a cell and what it does in sequence. This will be completed in groups of 2-3 students. Depending on time, students will be able to simply lay it out like First slide: Macrophage encounters pathogen, next slide: Macrophage engulfs pathogen and presents to T cells or if more time is available students can get pictures online of macrophages, T and B cells, pathogens, etc and do animations to show cells engulfing pathogens and other processes that occur in this sequence of events.

7) Review Activity- I will cold call on groups, so that one of cell mediated and one of humoral immunity is called on. The students will then have to go up to the front of the class and present their powerpoint of the steps of the immune process they picked. This allows all students to get a walk through of both of the different types of immunity while having students practice presenting and interacting with their peers. If there are mistakes, I will see if other members of the class (especially other groups that did the same branch) can correct them.

8) Method of assessment: I will have a bell closer question at the end of the class. The question will be: What is the role of the macrophage in the immune system? The lesson will be a success if 80% of the students can answer this correctly. To assess answers I will use clicker cards again. Additionally, how the students perform on their powerpoint presentation will provide me with some knowledge of how well they understand the process. Since they are fresh from playing the game and have the resources available to them, I am expecting most students to not struggle with this aspect.
