INDEPENDENT PROJECT PROPOSAL Hara Papoutsi

Topic The focus of this research project is on an exploration of the connection between movement, sound, film and poetry. I am starting from the point of view that as poetry is words and considering that they include an inner rhythm, it could be expressed through motion. I am also interested in the manner in which poetry addresses emotions and how these can be expressed into movement; I am also concerned about how the everyday life of people can be affected by the feelings of loss and separation. The thematic of the poem I will research, will be connected to the above subjects.

Rational The idea of expressing emotion through motion, which I first saw being referred at Labans system, is what I would like to investigate more. The point of departure for my exploration is a poem of Jac ues !revert "The #reakfast$. !revert is undoubtedly a surrealist %rench poet, born in &'((. )e was a multifaceted personality of %rench literature with particular contribution to the field of poetry and theater. )is poems are often about life in !aris and life after the *econd +orld +ar. Pervert, through the images that his poetry created, gave to the simplest act of repeated routine actions, imbued with cold indifference, such a depth, that one can ultimately depict psychological pain and feelings of loss. )is poems offer a glance directly into the reality of one,s everyday life and how that can be crude.

Aim The aim of this research is to explore the connections between movement, sound and film in order to create a dance work. Taking as a starting point !ervert,s poetry, I will try to find different ways to transform in motion the feelings that the text carries.

In addition I will research in how sound and film can be used as components within the work, in order to support and render my idea.

Methodolo ! I will begin by studying the poem itself and possible texts and materials that could be used as a starting point. !ossible areas of research will be the poetic structure and inner rhythm of the language that !ervert uses. -ext, I will turn to .aban and his theory. /s my task entails following a choreographic approach, a book that I would be interested to use is The intimate act of choreography by .ynne /nne #lom and .. Tarin 0haplin. 1y research also concerns the body in space so I will turn to appropriate bibliography including 2xhausting dance by /ndre .epecki. %ollowing the theoretical study, I will start studio research with improvisation. 1y plan is to use the images that the poem presents as an inspiration and a starting point for improvising, in order to find movement. Then I will try to find the sound score that will be appropriate. %ollowing that I will start rehashing with the chosen film in order to find the connections re uired; simultaneously I will read more about the subjects that will occur from these investigations.

Timeplan #y the middle of January I plan to have read the basic books of my study and then while gathering all the information I will start the studio practice. #y middle %ebruary I would like to have the basic structure and form of the presentation and by the end of 1arch to have the final form, to polish it and practice it throughout /pril.
