Komen Race for the Cure. The Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure series is the largest series of 5K runs/fitness walks in the world. This year, Columbus will host its 21st annual Race for the Cure May 18, 2013. The race will begin at 8 a.m. downtown at the Ohio Statehouse. The Race for the Cure works to raise funds and create awareness for the fight against breast cancer. The Race for the Cure also celebrates breast cancer survivors and honors those who lost their battle. Individual registration can be completed online at www.komencolumbus.org or can be mailed to the Columbus Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure at 929 Eastwind Drive, Suite 211, Westerville, Ohio 43081 until the day of the race. Adult registration is $30 and childrens participation is $15. The first 45,000 registrants receive a free T-shirt. Donations to Susan G. Komen can be included in any amount upon registration.

Komen: Race for the Cure Susan G. Komen was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1977 and passed away three years later at age 36. Before passing away, Komen asked her sister, Nancy Brinker, to help continue the fight against breast cancer. Brinker began the Susan G. Komen Foundation in Dallas in 1982. The following year, Dallas held the first Race for the Cure that included 800 participants. Since then Komen for the Cure has raised almost $2 billion for breast cancer research and awareness. There are now 122 affiliate offices across the country. The Susan G. Komen foundation holds races in more than 50 countries. The Columbus Affiliate began in 1993 and has now raised more than $13 million. Since 2011, Columbus has ranked in the top 10 for Race for the Cure participation across the nation. Komen Columbus provides services such as breast cancer screenings and awareness for 30 counties in the central and southern Ohio area. Columbus grants provide 21 breast cancer programs for 16,000 women ages 15 and older. These grants educate uninsured and underinsured women about breast cancer.
