demonstrations to first year physics concepts, we tackle popular physics misconceptions and have fun 1.00pm
along the way. Get a taste for what physics is like in first year, meet our physics lecturers and get a ‘selfie’
with characters from the Big Bang TV Show.
Bridge Testing – Traditionally bridges and buildings are strengthened by reinforcing them with steel plates Uni ATC107 10.00am–4.00pm
or covering sections with additional concrete which is like putting a cast on a broken limb. In recent years,
researchers have been investigating alternative strengthening materials like carbon-fibre reinforced
polymer (CFRP). Watch as we demonstrate the multi-fold increase in strength of simple concrete beams
when reinforced with one very thin layer of carbon-fibre strip.
Chain Breaking – Chains used in anchoring ships require testing to ensure their strength, resilience and Uni ATC107 11.00am, 12.30pm &
fatigue resistance. Watch as we test the strength of these enormous chains to find out how much force it 1.45pm
takes to break them apart. The machine that we will use is capable of applying a pulling force of 500
tonnes, which is equivalent to the weight of 500 passenger cars!

and explaining the features of the Smart Structures Lab, which is a unique research facility in Australia.
