WELCOME INTRODUCTION INVOCATION AND LITANY FOR GATHERING We worship on the first day of the week because our Savior was raised on that day. Every Sunday is a little Easter. This Sunday feels more like Easter than many as the appointed texts celebrate the reality of the resurrection. Live it up this Lord's day. Our God is the God of the living. Women of the Lutheran church have been gathering in the setting of Thank offering services since the early 1900s. It is a tradition grounded in our celebration of community, meeting together as faithful women joyfully giving thanks and praise for what God has given to us. The Thankoffering service features prayers, hymns, and litanies especially reflecting gratitude for the service of the Women of the ELCA. CHILDREN are always welcome to our Worship Service. Rainbow bags and childrens bulletins are available. A staffed nursery is also available if needed. An usher will gladly provide you with assistance. As a worship courtesy, we ask that you please turn off or set to vibrate all cellular telephones and pagers during the worship service. We ask that all present today please fill out the Attendance and Communion registration card found in your bulletin and place it in the offering plate so that we may record your presence with us. PRAYER UPON ENTERING THE PEW O God, you made us in your own image and redeemed us through Jesus Christ your Son. Look with compassion on the whole human family; take away the arrogance and hatred that infect our hearts; break down the walls that separate us; unite us in bonds of love; and, through our struggle and confusion, work to accomplish your purposes on earth; so that, in your good time, every people and nation may serve you in harmony around your heavenly throne; through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. In the name of the Father, and of the +Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. This is the day that the Lord has made. Let us rejoice and be glad in it. Today brings the gift of life. God our creator, you make us in your image. Today brings all we need to live with purpose. O holy one, you call us into discipleship in Christ Jesus. Today brings the strength to live more fully. Come, Holy Spirit, empower us for abundant life. Today brings women and men of many generations who grow together in faith and affirm and support one another. God our companion, you encourage us in community Today brings a world in need of healing and wholeness. God our healer, move us into active service. For the church, the society, and the world, We humbly enter into this worship, o God. Prepare our hearts. Amen. GATHERING SONG: Gather Us In (ELW 532)

CANTICLE OF PRAISE

FIRST READING: Haggai 1:15b2:9 In the second year of King DariusIn the seventh month, on the twenty-first day of the month, the word of the LORD came by the prophet Haggai, saying: 2Speak now to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and to the remnant of the people, and say, 3Who is left among you that saw this house in its former glory? How does it look to you now? Is it not in your sight as nothing? 4Yet now take courage, O Zerubbabel, says the LORD; take courage, O Joshua, son of Jehozadak, the high priest; take courage, all you people of the land, says the LORD; work, for I am with you, says the LORD of hosts, 5according to the promise that I made you when you came out of Egypt. My spirit abides among you; do not fear. 6For thus says the LORD of hosts: Once again, in a little while, I will shake the heavens and the earth and the sea and the dry land; 7and I will shake all the nations, so that the treasure of all nations shall come, and I will fill this house with splendor, says the LORD of hosts. 8The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, says the LORD of hosts. 9The latter splendor of this house shall be greater than the former, says the LORD of hosts; and in this place I will give prosperity, says the LORD of hosts. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Silence for reflection PRAYER OF THE DAY Let us pray. O God, our eternal redeemer, by the presence of your Spirit you renew and direct our hearts. Keep always in our mind the end of all things and the day of judgment. Inspire us for a holy life here, and bring us to the joy of the resurrection, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. lawless one is revealed, the one destined for destruction. 4He opposes and exalts himself above every so- called god or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, declaring himself to be God. 5Do you not remember that I told you these things when I was still with you? 13But we must always give thanks to God for you, brothers and sisters beloved by the Lord, because God chose you as the first fruits for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and through belief in the truth. 14For this purpose he called you through our proclamation of the good news, so that you may obtain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. 15So then, brothers and sisters, stand firm and hold fast to the traditions that you were taught by us, either by word of mouth or by our letter. 16 Now may our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and through grace gave us eternal comfort and good hope, 17 comfort your hearts and strengthen them in every good work and word. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Please stand and sing: GOSPEL VERSE:

I will speak of the glorious splendor | of your majesty and all your | marvelous works. 17 You are righteous in | all your ways and loving in | all your works. 18 You are near to all who | call upon you, to all who call up- | on you faithfully. 19 You fulfill the desire of | those who fear you; you hear their | cry and save them. 20 You watch over all | those who love you, but all the wicked you | shall destroy. 21 My mouth shall speak the praise | of the LORD; let all flesh bless God's holy name forev- | er and ever. GOSPEL: R

Luke 20:27-38

The holy gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Luke. Glory to you, O Lord. Some Sadducees, those who say there is no resurrection, came to him and asked him a question, "Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man's brother dies, leaving a wife but no children, the man shall marry the widow and raise up children for his brother. 29Now there were seven brothers; the first married, and died childless; 30then the second 31and the third married her, and so in the same way all seven died childless. 32Finally the woman

As to the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered together to him, we beg you, brothers and sisters, 2not to be quickly shaken in mind or alarmed, either by spirit or by word or by letter, as though from us, to the effect that the day of the Lord is already here. 3Let no one deceive you in any way; for that day will not come unless the rebellion comes first and the

also died. 33In the resurrection, therefore, whose wife will the woman be? For the seven had married her." 34 Jesus said to them, "Those who belong to this age marry and are given in marriage; 35but those who are considered worthy of a place in that age and in the resurrection from the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage. 36Indeed they cannot die anymore, because they are like angels and are children of God, being children of the resurrection. 37And the fact that the dead are raised Moses himself showed, in the story about the bush, where he speaks of the Lord as the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. 38Now he is God not of the dead, but of the living; for to him all of them are alive." The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. Please be seated

PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION With the whole people of Christ Jesus, let us call upon God for the sake of the church, the world, and all in need of prayer. Please sit or kneel as you are able. Each petition ends with: We pray in abundance, Creator, draw us in. God who reaches every people, turn our hearts to see those with us now, gathered at this Thankoffering service to give thanks and praise to you. Urge us on to the fullness of life, in the name of Christ, our lord. Amen. CONFESSION AND PROCLAMATION OF FORGIVENESS

SERMON Rev. Dr. Cheryl Peterson Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another. Silence for reflection and then we invite you to stand and sing: Silence is kept for reflection. HYMN OF THE DAY: Let the Whole Creation Cry (ELW 876) APOSTLES CREED I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. ANNOUNCEMENTS God of overflowing grace, we come to you with repentant hearts. Forgive us for shallow thankfulness. Forgive us for ignoring the ones in need. Forgive us for setting our hopes on fleeting treasures. Bring us home from the wilderness of sin, move us to turn to you, and strengthen us to serve you in all that we do and say; through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. There is joy in heaven over every sinner who repents. By the grace of God in + Christ Jesus, who gave himself up for us all, your sins are forgiven and you are made free. Rejoice with the angels and with one another! We are home in God's mercy, now and forever. Amen. PEACE Please stand as we greet each other in the peace of the risen Christ. The peace of Christ be with you always. And also with you.

OFFERTORY SENTENCES Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, so that there may be food in my house, and thus put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts; see if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you an overflowing blessing. Amen. DIALOGUE

COMMEMORATIONS FOR THE WEEK Monday, November 11, 2013 Martin, Bishop of Tours, died 397 Martin's pagan father enlisted him in the Roman army. Approached by a beggar, Martin cut his cloak in half and gave part to the man, whom he later understood as representing Christ. He asked to leave the army, but was jailed instead. After his release, he became a preacher, and later a bishop. Monday, November 11 Sren Aabye Kierkegaard, teacher, died 1855 Kierkegaard was a Danish theologian whose writings also gave rise to the modern philosophy of existentialism. He frequently attacked the complacency of the state church of his day, as well as its desire to be accepted by polite society rather than be a stumbling block. Sunday, November 17 Elizabeth of Hungary, renewer of society, died 1231 Born in Hungary, Elizabeth was betrothed to the son of the Landgrave of Thuringia, and at age four was taken to be raised with him at the Wartburg Castle. Ten years later they were married. She was very generous to the poor, and after her husband's death she lived in cruel hardship until her own death at age twenty-four.
