CHAPTER 1 A. REASONS FOR SELECTION OF TITLE Based on data that gained from UMYs Library, from January until August 2012, the interest of students to read book is low, prove by the lowest of librarys visitor occurred in August as much as 27 visitors and the highest visitors occurred in march as much as 1897 visitors. Based on data above we interest to do research and find the reason of this happening. Because of that we decide the title of our research is factors which affect reading interest of UMYs students. B. BACKGROUND Many people believe that Book is one the miracle in this world. With book many information, moments and maybe picture can be saved and be heritage to the next generations. So, book has accompanied Human beings life when they were started to be more intellectual and aware about the anything that deserved to be saved and eternalized in better way. In the past time, or approximately in the 7 century, The Arabian Nights Civilization in the Baghdad is recognized as the one of the greatest civilization, because the they built big library and have so many books that contained important knowledge that have goals to help study development, encourage research, and take care about translation matters. Build the society and the civilization. In its development, the book packaging were always transforming to be better, starting from its materials of making/ medium that been changed from stone, woods layers and then becoming a paper as we see as usual, the media of writing such as ink was also developed and the kind or type of every book that written is become various. But the most important is book will be useful if a habit of reading of the people is good, and its because people will always looking for new knowledge and ideas to improve and be better in the next time. And surely, thats why that reading habits is give so many benefit for the reader, whatever the genre of the book that they read. For students at

universities, reading book is like to be one of the obligations for them because by reading, they can get new knowledge and widening their horizon. A further Reading book habit is one of the main methods to get lots of information, and references to help their study and give more details information better. Nowadays, we will very often find students who are willing to always work with the books whether only for increasing their knowledge or using the books as the literature for their academic task. It can be influenced by so many internal factors such as the condition of the library, the completeness of its collection book, the librarys facilities and maybe other factors. First, the condition of the library can influence the students to stay longer in the library. Students will feel comfort if the condition of the library is also making them comfort inversely they will feel not comfort to stay longer if the condition is not comfort. Second, the completeness of the book is also one of the factors that will at track the students to find literature for their academic tasks. Third, the facilities of the library is also can influence the students since the facilities are can make the students easier in finding the books they need`. There were also exist the external factors which influencing the reading book interest of the student, these factors such as the development of internet technology which its existence replacing the function of books and creating simple habit in the student so they become lazy to read books. Other influencing factor could be came from lecturer which very less giving assignment which enforcing student to read books, returning books role as the primary source of knowledge. C. ISSUES FORMULATION 1. Do internal factors such as library facility influencing the interest of the students of UMY to reading books?

2. Do external factors such as Internet and technology development influencing the interest of the students of UMY to reading books? 3. Which are the most dominant factors which influencing the low interest in reading books? 4. What can we do to solve or overcome the factors which reducing the student interest of reading books in order to increase the interest? D. GOAL OF RESEARCH 1. Discovering factors which causing UMY students has low interest in reading books. 2. Knowing which factors that most dominant in affecting students interest on reading books. 3. Knowing which action should be done to increase the student interest in reading by overcome or solving the main factor which influencing it. 4. Could create alternatives and solutions to increase the student interest on reading books. E. HYPOTESIS Factor-factor such as library condition, and the development of internet are the dominant factor which reducing the book reading interest of the students F. RESEARCH METHOD Population Population is the whole subject as a source of data that have certain characteristics in a study.
