Part 1 ITRI compound

I. Split site compound

The ITRI Hsinchu compound consists of the Chung Hsing Compound and the Kuang Fu
Compound, which are about five kilometers apart. A map and detailed directions to the
compound are provided below.

Chung Hsing compound (中興院區)

Located at 195, Section 4, Chung Hsing Road, where the eastern boundary of Hsinchu City
meets the neighboring town of Chutung. There are two entrances to this compound: the East
Gate and the West Gate. Please notice the opening hours of the respective gates.

Directions by car: (from CKS airport to ITRI Chung Hsing Compound)
1. Take Freeway 2 from the airport to the Chung Shan Freeway.
2. Go south on the freeway and exit the freeway at the Hsinchu exit. The distance from airport to this
exit is about 70 km.
3. After exiting the freeway, make a left (east) turn onto to Kuang Fu Road.
4. When you pass Juchung(竹中), Kuang Fu road will be renamed Chung Hsing Road(中興路).
5. After driving approximately 10 km from the freeway exit, you will see the west gate of ITRI on your
right side.

Directions by bus: (from CKS airport to ITRI Chung Hsing Compound)

1. Upon exiting the airport terminal, take a KuoKuang(國光) bus to Hsinchu. The distance is about 70
km.
2. Get off at the Starbucks coffee shop on Kuang Fu road. National Tsing Hua University is across the
street.
3. Walk across the street and take a Hsia Gong Guan(下公館) bus to Er Chong Pu(二重埔).
4. Get off at the west gate of ITRI. Depending on the traffic, the bus ride will take 15 to 20 minutes.

Directions by bus: (from Taipei to ITRI Chung Hsing Compound)

1. Go over the pedestrian footbridge at the northwest corner of the Taipei Main Train Station.
2. From there you can take a KuoKuang(國光) bus to Hsinchu. The distance is about 75 km.
3. Get off at Starbucks Coffee on Kuang Fu Road. National Tsing Hua University is across the street.
4. Walk across the street and take a Hsia Gong Guan(下公館) bus to Er Chong Pu(二重埔).
5. Get off at the west gate of ITRI. Depending on the traffic, the bus ride will take 15 to 20 minutes.

Directions by train: (from Taipei to ITRI Chung Hsing Compound)

1. Go to Taipei Main Train Station and take a train to Hsinchu. The four classes are: Express(自強號),
ChuKuang(莒光號), Fuhsing(復興號), and Ordinary(普通車). The ride will take about 90 minutes.
2. Please get on the Hsia Gong Guan(下公館) bus located next to the Hsinchu Railway station. Buy a
ticket to Er Chong Pu(二重埔).
3. Get off at the west gate of ITRI. The distance is about 12km.

Kuang Fu compound (光復院區)

Close to downtown Hsinchu, at 321, Section 2, Kuang Fu Road. （See map P2） Both the
Union Chemical Laboratories (UCL) and the Center for Measurement Standards (CMS) are
located here.

II. Compound catering

The main cafeteria for Chung Hsing compound is in the basement of Buildings 52, and 53.
（See map P1）. It servers breakfast, lunch and dinner, and offers a variety of foods with rice
and noodles. The same service is available on Kuang Fu compound in the cafeteria next to
the Administrative Building （See Building 2 on map P2）.

Shifts
To avoid lunch time overcrowding in the Chung Hsing compound cafeteria, service is divided
into three 20 minute shifts. Shifts one and two are for ITRI employees only, assigned
according to department, and are switched every three months. Non-ITRI employees should
use shift three only and should pay in cash.

III. Compound residence

2. Dormitory
w The Chung Hsing compound dormitory provides single bedroom accommodation for
unaccompanied overseas employees. See map P1 for location of the dormitory. For employees
who are accompanied, four 72 square feet apartments are available in Kuangming Village.
w Leasing agreements. Normally, a lease will not exceed six months, although a maximum six
month extension can be granted in exceptional circumstances. To apply, please contact

Banks and automatic teller machines ( ATMs )

Two banks - the Post Office and the Land Bank of Taiwan - have branch offices on the Chung Hsing
compound, both beside the Health Clinic in Building 52. The Post Office has an ATM outside the Post
Office and the Land Bank has three machines: one in front of Building 51, one at the side entrance of
Building 77 and one inside Building 89.

3.Eating
Eating is generally very convenient and can be surprisingly cheap. Options to suit your taste
and budget could be
w fast food take-out or dine-in restaurant
w domestic or cosmopolitan (the second usually in larger city hotels) specialties: domestic (e.g., sea
food) or foreign (e.g., Italian)
w special diet (e.g., vegetarian)

Note that in many venues a knife and fork may not often be available, so either carry your
own or learn to use chopsticks!

Well-known snack stands

w Cheng-Huang Temple, at the intersection of Chuang-San Road and Tung-Meng Street, is one of
Hsinchu's most famous landmarks. The compound for many street vendors selling well-known
snacks such as meatballs, dumplings, rice noodles and egg rolls.
w Tsing-Hwa University night market
w There are many eateries opposite National Tsing-Hwa University on Chieng-Kung Road, serving
Cantonese porridge, Li-Chin bean curd dessert and Taiwanese snacks.

4.Transportation
Hsinchu is easily reached via public transportation. The city is a major stop on the main north
south rail line from Taipei to Kaohsiung. It is convenient from both the Chung-San Freeway
and the Second Northern Freeway. In addition, frequent and comfortable long distance
coaches leave from near the train station (Hsinchu Bus Company, Taiwan Motor Transport
Company, Fe Go Express) and serve a wide network of routes.

w The Hsinchu City municipal bus service office and terminal is near the train station, facing the
SOGO Department Store.
w Inter-city publicly and privately operated bus services begin from both sides of Hsinchu train station.
An intermediate stop and ticket office is next to the side entrance of National Tsing-Hwa University.
The Taiwan Motor Transportation Company provides southbound bus services to Taichung and
Kaohsiung.

 Always remember to hold onto any travel tickets, whether local or long-distance, as they
must usually be surrendered on arrival at your destination. In cities, taxis are cheap, and the
easiest way to get around. It will save a lot of hassle to have the Chinese name of your
destination written down, or marked clearly on a map.

5.Money matters
In Taiwan, payments for goods or services are more than likely made in cash only. The use of
checks is comparatively rare, and credit cards are gaining acceptance.

7.Weather and Clothing

The hot and often humid summer season lasts from April to October, with temperatures of
27°C-35°C. Wear light, airy clothing. The rainy season - often with heavy, prolonged
downpours - is from March to May. July and August are months when typhoons are most
likely. Temperatures in winter - November to March - can reach lows of 10°C, although days
when the weather is quite warm can suddenly intervene.

8. Bookshop and libraries

National Tsing-Hwa University and National Chiao-Tung University, both within easy reach of
ITRI, have extensive lending libraries. Downtown, the Eslite bookstore has a wide selection
of foreign books and magazines, and the Kingstone bookstore sells tickets for live
performances and shows taking place in Hsinchu or Taipei. See following list of bookshops

w Shih-Pah Hill
A hilly scenic area, always open for hiking and jogging. Three entrances: from Chieh-So Road,

One of the oldest local tourists spot, it is famous for its lakeside woodlands. Can be reached

路線指引 (Directions by car from Freeways to ITRI)

自中山高速公路：
中山高速公路南下 95Km 處，新竹交流道（新竹/竹東）下高速公路。
至中興院區，請下交流道後左轉光復路往竹東方向，直走後接中興路，中興院區西大門口即在右側，
約 15~20 分鐘車程。
至光復院區，下交流道後右轉光復路往新竹方向，直走 2Km，光復院區即在左側，約 3~5 分鐘車程。

自北二高路線：
至中興院區，北二高南下約 90Km 處，竹林交流道（竹東/芎林）下高速公路，往芎林方向約 600 公尺
（第二個紅綠燈）十字路口左轉接快速道路連絡道往二重埔方向直走到底，丁字路口左轉過內灣線鐵
道，過二重埔民族路接中興路右轉，直走約 1Km 左邊即中興院區東大門，路程約 15 分鐘車程。
p.s. 至光復院區請選擇中山高速公路較快到達。
