2/ E#MC7C6ristian .id I"pro ing Co""unit! &esponse to Manage"ent o' Malaria 1IC&.M3 +ro-ect/ 'he (&C8AM) .ro-ect is an implementation research $eing exec!ted in partnership $etween Christian0A&5 (<E) and Excellence and Friends Management Care Centre (EFMC) in Anam$ra state" 2o!th East" Nigeria/ 'he pro-ect is premised on the $ac9gro!nd of the $!rden of malaria in Nigeria which $ears a$o!t 2+J of the malarial disease $!rden in Africa and contri$!tes significantly to the one million li1es lost each year which largely consists of children and pregnant women/ Malaria0related deaths acco!nt for a$o!t ##J of maternal mortality and #0J of low $irth weight/ &n addition" they contri$!te a$o!t 2+J of infant mortality and ,0J of !nder0+ mortality" res!lting to an estimated ,00"000 childhood deaths ann!ally/ Malaria also exerts h!ge social and economic $!rden on families" comm!nities and the co!ntry which res!lt to an ann!al estimated loss of #,2 $illion naira (N#,2$n) spent on treatment and pre1ention as well as loss of man0ho!rs according to the National Malaria Control .rogramme (NMC.)/ 2ince access to acc!rate diagnosis and artemisinin com$ination therapies (AC's) close to homes will red!ce malaria0related deaths" especially among childrenA Malaria 8apid 5iagnostic 'ests (m85's) which ma9e parasite0$ased diagnosis possi$le where microscopy is !na1aila$le ha1e the potential of impro1ing the case management of malaria and t!rn the tide in the fight against malaria/ 'he rationale for this pro-ect hinges on the fact that the distri$!tion and a1aila$ility of m85's and AC's ha1e $een irreg!lar and in many instances" not readily a1aila$le e1en in !r$an areas/ 'his pilot pro-ect has the potential of changing anti0malarial prescription practices from pres!mpti1e to targeted treatment" impro1e diagnostic capacity in facilities witho!t microscopic diagnosis and ens!re the consistent a1aila$ility of diagnostic methods for malaria/ &C8AM aims to esta$lish 1al!e added $enefit of a com$ined approach to malaria management (m85's" AC' and GG&N) at ser1ice deli1ery points/
