JOB POSTING Food Program Relief Staff Hours of work: One evening per month required, daytime on-call

shifts as needed Jessies The June Callwood Centre for Young Women is a multi-service resource centre for pregnant teenagers, young parents and their children. Jessies work includes a broad spectrum of services addressing issues related to the social determinants of health. Jessies operates from a feminist perspective and is a pro-choice organization that supports a womans right to make choices about her sexual health and pregnancy options. We strive to demonstrate our commitment to feminism, antidiscrimination and positive social change in every aspect of our structure and functioning. Jessies staff and participants (clients) come from diverse cultures and sexual orientations. Having a rich history in working with diverse populations is fundamental to this role. We provide our participants with a Food Program, which includes hot lunches served Monday to Thursday, dinner twice per week, and healthy snacks. We are looking for someone who is passionate and creative about sharing their knowledge of good food, is skilled at cooking a diverse range of foods and is able to work independently in an organized, welcoming kitchen. During their scheduled shifts, Food Program Relief Staff are responsible for preparing, and serving meals based on a weekly menu plan. Food Program Relief Staff are also responsible for managing kitchen personnel and supervising all related culinary activities during their relief shifts. Food Program Relief Staff are asked to work at least one 6 hr. evening shift per month (Tuesday 17pm), as well as occasionally work on-call relief shifts during the week when needed in order to cover the absence of the Food Program Coordinator. EXPERIENCE Minimum one year experience in a kitchen setting Minimum one year experience with cooking in large quantities

RESPONSIBILITIES Creating a safe and welcoming environment for participants, staff , volunteers, and placement students Maintaining a safe environment for food and equipment Providing dinner for 40-50 people at least one Tuesday per month Providing lunch for 25-35 people during on-call shifts (Monday-Thursday) Preparing healthy snacks for groups

Incorporating donated food items (received from Second Harvest and other sources) into menus Assisting with food preparation for special events such as board meetings, Holiday Party, etc. Maintaining high standards of cleanliness, food safety, and organization with the team of Food Program Coordinator, students, and volunteers Cleaning, sanitizing and maintenance; washing all dishes and utensils Ensuring that kitchen supplies are stocked and equipment is maintained in good order Ensuring food costs are controlled and groceries are utilized effectively Assisting with loading, unloading and stocking of groceries and supplies Maintaining daily records on number of meals served Ordering, budgeting and record-keeping when Food Program Coordinator is absent

CONSIDERATIONS Multiple demands and constant interruption in tasks Lifting, carrying and holding 35lbs. Exposure to cleaning products i.e. bleach solution QUALIFICATIONS Food Handlers Certificate; good knowledge of food handling and safety Demonstrated ability to prepare healthy meals Good organizational skills and time management skills Ability to follow instructions and complete assigned tasks Demonstrated experience working with and sensitivity to those who experience poverty, discrimination and food insecurity Experience and sensitivity in dealing with members of different cultural and racial backgrounds, including visible and non-visible dimensions of diversity ASSETS First Aid and/or WHMIS Current Vulnerable Sector Police Check Understanding and knowledge of various healthy eating practices, including prenatal nutrition Creativity with recipes and menus Experience working with young parents, infants and toddlers, and/or experience working in a drop-in setting Salary: $15 to $17 per hour, based on experience Please e-mail your cover letter and resume, as a single .doc or .pdf file to: foodprogram@jessiescentre.org Application Deadline: Monday, November 18th, 2013 at 9:00 am Jessie's Centre is committed to the principles of employment equity.
