Bates ENC4212-CMB13-Fall Module 6 2 November 2013 Note: For editing and readability purposes, the multi-column format was

simplified to a single column. For a similar reason, screen shots were divided into their component parts and still others transcribed. This was done before editing the document so the track changes and comment function would be available for later review. FINDING ARTICLES 1

Finding Full Text Articles

Citation SearchingFinding a Full Text Article Based on a Citation

If you have a citation (author, journal/magazine title, year, etc.), there are several ways to determine if UCF provides access to the full-text of the article. The availability of the full-text of electronic articles is constantly changing, so try a number of these different methods of checking before deciding to use Interlibrary Loan or giving up. Hint: See the section of this module on Interlibrary Loan for information about ordering an electronic copy of the article from another library.

3. Check the Journals Internet Web Site

1. A publisher will sometimes provide full-text to a journal or to selected articles. UCF may also have full-text privileges from a journals web site and the information has not yet been entered into the catalog or online journal subscripti on list. 2. Use an Internet search engine (e.g., Google, Yahoo or Bing) to search for the journal title or the complete citation.

D. Database Searching

Formatted Formatted Formatted Formatted

Library databases are organized collections of information that the library pays for and that can be accessed online. You must be connected directly to UCF or have the EZProxy activated to search a database. When you are searching databases for a topic, and want to find articles available electronically in full-text, there are a number of features you might want to investigate that are part of the UCF Librarys web page or provided by databases. 1. From the UCF Library page click on Articles and Databases. You can access the databases either alphabetically or by subject. If you are not sure which databases would be the most useful for your subject, choose the subject guide. 2. Databases often provide options to limit your search. See the section of the module on Search Strategies. Important: Limiting your search to full-text only is never recommended. The full text of many articles will be available to you by using the "Get Full Text" icon. Limiting your search to full-text only will, ironically, eliminate many articles available online. Hence, the warning: Never limit your search to full-text only! 3. Sometimes you can link to full-text articles within the database. o Click on any links that say HTML full-text or PDF full-text. If you do not see a full-text option, click on the "Get Full Text" iconicon. o o The Get Full Text icon icon is a bridge from the database you are in to other resources that the UCF Library buys that contain full-text articles. When you click on this icon, you are linking to any other resources the library buys that provide the full-text of the article of interest. Please note that the Get Full Text icon does not guarantee that full-text is available; it simply means that the option to search for full-text is available. Also, when you limit a search to full-text only in a database, you will be excluding a ll full-text articles available in other UCF Library databases. Hence, the warning: Never limit your search to full-text only! Use the Get Full Text to find the full text! Finding Full Text Articles The library buys the full text of thousands of journals from many different companies. If linked full-text is not available, click on the Get Full Text icon to see if the article is available elsewhere electronically.

Comment [CB9]: There is some user confusion concerning ILL (the interlibrary loan service) and ILLiad (the service that UCF utilizes to facilitate ILL). I recommend just referencing the service (ILLiad) throughout the document for clarity. The distinction between the library service and the means of providing the service dont seem to be a necessary distinction for the researchers. ILLiad is a proper name and for consistency, should only be in bold if it is referencing a web item that is clickable. All other occurrences are referential, not directive. Important: Keep in mind that database generated citations are not always 100% correct, so be sure to double check with the APA manual and your instructor. For example, URLs and database information (such as "Retrieved from CINAHL Database" or "Retrieved from EBSCOhost" or "Retrieved from http://ezproxy.lib.ucf.edu/login?URL=http://search.ebscohost.com") are not necessary for APA (6th ed.) for journal articles found in subscription databases like CINAHL. (Note: This does not apply to regular websites, for which you still would need the list the URL.). Also, it is not necessary ( for APA format) to include the month for scholarly journal articles which are paginated by volume and issue. Again, database generated citations are not always perfect, so be sure to double check them.
