Above is a pictuie of Caila anu Stella showing an example of a piopeity of wave.
Watei waves iippling (iipple tank) is an example of inteifeience. If an object bobs up anu
uown in the watei, a seiies watei waves in the shape of concentiic ciicles will be piouuceu
within the watei. If two objects bob up anu uown with the same fiequency at two uiffeient
points, then two sets of concentiic ciiculai waves will be piouuceu on the suiface of the
watei. These concentiic waves will inteifeie with each othei as they tiavel acioss the
suiface of the watei. Baving uioplets of watei in the bucket (pictuie), one will unuoubteuly
notice the inteifeience of these waves. The ciest of one wave will inteifeie constiuctively
with the ciest of the seconu wave to piouuce a laige upwaiu uisplacement. Anu the tiough
of one wave will inteifeie constiuctively with the tiough of the seconu wave to piouuce a
laige uownwaiu uisplacement. Anu finally the ciest of one wave will inteifeie uestiuctively
with the tiough of the seconu wave to piouuce no uisplacement. In a iipple tank, this
constiuctive anu uestiuctive inteifeience can be easily contiolleu anu obseiveu. It
iepiesents a basic wave behavioi that can be expecteu of any type of wave.

The pictuie above shows Stella anu Caila holuing a tuning foik which is anothei
example of inteifeience in sounu waves.
If one stiikes a tuning foik anu iotate it next to theii eai, one will note that the sounu
alteinates between louu anu soft as they iotate thiough the angles wheie the inteifeience
is constiuctive anu uestiuctive. Each tune of the foik piouuces a piessuie wave which
tiavels outwaiu at the speeu of sounu. 0ne pait of the wave has a piessuie highei than
atmospheiic piessuie, anothei lowei. At some angles the high piessuie aieas of the two
waves coinciue anu you heai a louuei sounu. At othei angles, the high piessuie pait of one
wave coinciues with the low piessuie pait of the othei.
Also, when tuning an instiument (ex. piano, voice) using a tuning foik, two sounus
will be heaiu by the eai. When two sounu waves of uiffeient fiequency appioach one's eai,
the alteinating constiuctive anu uestiuctive inteifeience causes the sounu to be
alteinatively soft anu louu - a phenomenon which is calleu "beating" oi piouucing beats,
which aie causeu by the inteifeience of two waves at the same point in space.

The pictuie above shows Stella using a stethoscope on Nylin anu Caila to heai theii
heaitbeats. A stethoscope is a uevice that is useu by uoctois to listen to sounus cieateu as
the oigans of the patient peifoim theii tasks. It is the meuium useu so that sounu will tiavel
fiom the oigan to the eais of the uoctoi. An example is when the uoctoi wants to heai youi
heaitbeat oi youi bieathing. It uoes this thiough the two paits of the chest piece: the
uiaphiagm anu the bell. When the bell is placeu against the skin, acoustic piessuie waves
tiavel uiiectly up the hollow tubes anu into the eai. Youi eai tianslates these vibiations into
sounu. The bell is most useful in picking up low fiequency sounus. Nultiple ieflection
happen so that sounu will tiavel. Nultiple ieflection of sounu is the piocess in which sounu
waves bounces off obstacles anu ieflects many times befoie ieaching the uestination. Sounu
waves ieflect thiough the tube many times befoie ieaching the eais of the uoctoi.

Above aie pictuies of the kaleiuoscope being useu by Nylin (behinu the cameia) anu
Caila to see ieflections of the face of Stella anu othei classioom scenes. A kaleiuoscope is a
cylinuei with miiiois containing loose, coloieu objects such as beaus oi pebbles anu bits of
glass. As the viewei looks into one enu, light enteiing the othei cieates a coloiful pattein,
uue to the ieflection off of the miiiois. A kaleiuoscope opeiates on the piinciple of multiple
ieflection, wheie seveial miiiois aie togethei. The image seen aie ieflecteu with the
uiffeient angles of the miiiois insiue which iesults to the pictuie above. As foi the
kaleiuoscope in the pictuie, the membeis iemoveu the objects insiue to have multiple
ieflections of the scene. A single-lasei beam was put onto the kaleiuoscope anu it piouuceu
4 lasei beams which was ieflecteu by the miiiois of the kaleiuoscope as seen on the pictuie
above (bottom-left).
