Not Taking It for Granted by Rev. Clay Stauffer, Senior Minister

Thanksgiving is just over a week away. Does that surprise you? Are you ready? Advent will begin Thanksgiving weekend on Sunday, December 1st. Our annual Hanging of the Greens Service to kick off the Advent Season will be that night (December 1st) at 6:30 p.m. in the sanctuary and the traditional Tasting Party will follow in Drowota Hall. Then, Walk Thru Bethlehem will be the following Sunday, December 8th. All of this to say, it will be a busy time at Woodmont between now and the end of the year. Thanksgiving is a time for us to slow down and count our blessings in life. Truth be told, we are often guilty of taking those blessings for granted. We often overlook things like faith, marriage, family, church, food on the table, a house, clothing, health, health care, friendship, children, grandchildren, freedom, education, and a host of other things. Deep down, we appreciate these things but sometimes, we do take them for granted. We get caught up in the rat race of life and find ourselves simply wanting more. Paul's letter to the Philippians is an excellent epistle to read leading up to Thanksgiving. It is short, powerful, and inspiring. He writes in chapter four, "Whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is pleasing, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things." Just a few verses later he says, "I know what it is to have little, and I know what it is to have plenty. In any and all circumstances I have learned the secret of being well-fed and of going hungry, of having plenty and of being in need. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." That, right there, is a Thanksgiving sermon. thousand people will walk through. It is truly a great Woodmont tradition. We need everybody to play a role either in costume or behind the scenes. This is a church-wide effort. It is a wonderful opportunity to meet other people at Woodmont and to help others experience the real meaning and joy of Christmas. To sign up, enter or click on this link: www.WTBWoodmont.com or call Steve Smith at 414-5899. If you see Paul and Pam Hardin at church, please thank them for chairing WTB for a SEVENTH year in a row. ROOM IN THE INN This happens every Friday night at South Hall during the winter months. We house roughly twelve men from the downtown mission. We pick up our guests, bring them to the church, provide them dinner, let them have a good night's sleep, feed them breakfast, give them a sack lunch, and then take them back downtown. This is another ministry that has been happening for years at Woodmont but it takes lots of volunteers to make it happen. Overnight hosts seem to be in demand the most, and starting this year, couples are now allowed to do that. If you want to volunteer for Room In the Inn, email Mary Kiger at maryhkiger@gmail.com. Small groups and classes are encouraged to volunteer for a night together.

This Thanksgiving, I hope you will think about both parts of the word THANKS & GIVING. The best way for us to give thanks to God for our blessings is to give back and help others. I have listed three ways to do that, but obviously there are many more. Once again, hear Paul's words from Philippians: "Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and As a church, we too can take things for granted. We are supplication with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known blessed in many ways here at Woodmont. But here are some to God. And the peace of God which passes all understanding things I don't want us to overlook this Thanksgiving season. will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." This Thanksgiving and Advent, may we all find that peace which Remember the second part of the word "Thanks-GIVING." passes understanding. SUPPORTING THE CHURCH FINANCIALLY We all have to support the church with our time, talent, and treasure. Through October, we are lagging behind on the Blessings, revenue side of our budget. This is not unusual for this time of the year. Many will wait until December to make a financial contribution to Woodmont, and I have always said that we really never know how we are doing in terms of our budget until we get through December. Just remember that we cannot do everything that we do at Woodmont without the financial support and sacrifice of members. We all must P.S. Please keep Steve and Deb LaForge in your thoughts support the mission and ministries of the church. and prayers. They are leaving this weekend for the Philippines to help with Typhoon Disaster Relief through Hope Force WALK THRU BETHLEHM This is one of the greatest International. Steve and Deb, thanks for all you do to represent gifts that Woodmont gives this community year after year, Woodmont and inspire the rest of us! and it takes a massive amount of volunteers to pull it off!! We turn the lower level of our church into the village of Bethlehem at the time of Christ's birth and roughly seven

Preparing to Give Thanks by Thom Schuyler, Director of College & Young Adults
When it comes to the annual arrival of Thanksgiving and Christmas I remain a child at heart. The (roughly) thirty days that link these two holidays lift my spirits like no other time of year. I suspect many of you share these sentiments. But there are issues of planning and preparation that can cause the spirit of this season to be dampened. As I was pondering these things yesterday I had a modest revelation. Let me explain In this modern era, with families spread across the country and the globe, planning for Thanksgiving and Christmas is necessary, no doubt. I'm certain that many Woodmont families are in the process of determining their destination for the big Thanksgiving meal (or meals) and negotiating when and where their primary Christmas gathering (or gatherings) will be. Who will host the meal, who will make the turkey, who will bring the apple pie, why are we having tomato aspic, what time will we eat, when can we leave and who's going to tell so -and-so we're not coming to her house this year? Lots of emotions get knotted up in such questions and answers: feelings get hurt and nerves frayed. It is a human reality that even in the most joyous seasons perhaps mostly in the most joyous seasons we get ourselves all twisted up and diverted from the happy essentials. Shame on us! I am trying to teach myself a lesson this year and maybe it will hold some significance for you, as well. As believers in God's mercy and grace we have no business "preparing to give thanks." Rather, our hearts and minds should be in a perpetual state of thanksgiving. This, of course, is much easier said than done. So, a large portion of my prayer is devoted to asking God's Spirit to make mine a grateful heart not tomorrow, not November 28th or December 25th but always. This will not be easy but Jesus looked at them and said, "With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible." (Matthew 19:26) Happy Thanksgiving! xo - Thom

The Minis-tree by Andra Moran, Creative Director for "The Bridge"

What's bendable, twinkling, full of opportunity, and rolls on wheels? If you guessed "a minis-tree," you are right! Here's the scoop: The Minis-tree will arrive at Woodmont on December 1st. It will be strung with ministry-project ornaments bearing requests from the ministers at Woodmont. You are invited to take an ornament and get involved in a one-time hands-on gift to our church's mission. Perhaps you'll pick the ornament that invites you to host a young adult supper gathering, or serve on a creative team at The Bridge. Maybe you'll get to be part of a Nashville Food Project run, or be a substitute teacher for a Sunday School lesson. You might even choose to pitch in with VBS or a GEMS event! There are plenty of fun opportunities for all ages, interests and abilities! The Minis-tree will be on a rolling cart and will "appear" around the church for the month of December. Act fast: Each minister only gets to hang 5 ministry project ornaments, so choose yours early! We know that Christmas is the season for giving, and we The Minis-tree is the collective brainstorm of our thank you in advance for participating in giving back to ministerial staff exploring how we can partner with our congregation on special projects. Woodmont is truly blessed Woodmont by partnering with our ministers through the to have a congregation full of giving hearts and hands. The Minis-tree. Christmas season, we welcome the Minis-tree as a way to pair ~Andra projects with volunteers.

Sponsor Spotlight
We have 14 amazing youth sponsors signed up to lead the youth group this year. Please join us in thanking our youth sponsors as they give their time and talents to the 6th-12th grade youth in our church. This week, please take some extra time to celebrate and get to know Sara Anne Quinn. Sara Anne Quinn grew up in Nashville and loved being an active member of her youth group. Mission trips with her youth program are some of her favorite memories and inspired her to study international studies and Spanish in college at the University of North Carolina. Sara Anne attended law school at the University of Tennessee where she met her husband and fellow youth sponsor, Stephen Quinn. Stephen brought Sara Anne to Woodmont, where she has served on the TRIPS committee, loves being a part of the Young Adults program, and is excited to "join" the youth now. Sara Anne is an attorney at Butler, Snow, O'Mara, Stevens & Cannada PLLC, and she loves traveling, reading, Tar Heel basketball, and beating Stephen's softball team.

Bread Bakers Needed for WTB

Are you looking for a way to help with WTB? Bread baking is your answer. It's fun, easy, and makes your home smell wonderful! Here's what you do: Purchase the frozen (unbaked) loaves of bread (5 to a pack at Kroger). Thaw (no need to let it rise) the bread and cut into 4 pieces, lengthwise. Roll each piece into a long snake and cut about 1-inch pieces from the snake. Place them on a tray and bake at 350 until light brown. Each loaf makes 80-100 pieces. Most bakers choose to bake 5 loaves. The baked bread pieces can be placed in Ziploc or grocery bags and then frozen. If you don't have room in your freezer, please place the pieces in the large silver freezer in the downstairs WCC kitchen. Please call Lisa Pitts at 332-8368 (no text) or email at lisadpitts@yahoo.com if you would like to bake or have any questions.

Mission & Outreach

Room in the Inn Clothing Drive

Room in the Inn has kicked off for the season and the clothing donation bin announced last week is finally here! As the weather gets colder our guests are definitely in need of clothing items to keep them warm. As many of you know, every weekly guest is allowed to select two items from the clothing closet, which means we have to regularly maintain the inventory. This year we are partnering with Thriftsmart to manage clothing donations for RITI. All of our used donations will be put in the bin on the church campus and they will pick it up every Monday or Tuesday. Then our donations will be weighed and will be credit to a gift card we can use to make specific purchases we need for the RITI closet at a 50% discount. Not only will this save us time and help us be strategic with stocking the closet, but it will also help an amazing organization. Once RITI is over, we'll be able to use those gift cards to support other needs, such as victims of crisis, NFP families, etc. For those that don't know, Thriftsmart is a Christian-based thrift store that, unlike other thrift stores, uses 100% of their proceeds to support four Nashville-area charities. Learn more about the organization and their mission at www.thriftsmart.com. We're doing a BIG clothing drive starting now through December 8th. Everything collected through then will be immediately credited to a gift card to stock the RITI closet (after that they will only update our account and send the gift card once a quarter). The Thrifstmart donation bin has been placed in the Outdoor Chapel parking area (where the Blessing of the Animals and the Sunrise Service take place). You can start loading your donations in plastic bags and putting those in the bin as of today! Thriftsmart will accept gently used men's/women's/children's clothing, shoes, housewares, linens, books, and furniture. However, everything MUST fit into the bin so please don't place items outside of it. If you have larger furniture items to donate you can drop them off at Thriftsmart (4890 Nolensville Road) and mention they should be credited to the Woodmont Christian Church account. Also, Thriftsmart is happy to provide a receipt for your donation for tax-deduction purposes if you drop off your donation at their physical store. You can also contact April Gung if you would like to donate new men's socks, Thriftsmart gift cards, give monetary donations, or have questions about your donation. April's email address is april.stevens320@gmail.com. Monetary donations can be made at any time by writing a check to WCC and noting that it is for the RITI clothing closet. The checks can be mailed to the church or dropped off at the church office for Chris Beck to process. Feel free to donate in any way your heart so calls you. Again, for the first big push we would LOVE to have any donations you can make by December 8th so we can stock up the closet (it's a little bare right now!). Let's make this a great and WARM winter season for our RITI guests, as always modeling the warmth and compassion of our Lord Jesus Christ.
The First Gift of Christmas!
If you are a CFCA sponsor, please put sending a card to your sponsored child at the top of your holiday list. Letters take a long time to be translated and to travel to their destination, but writing them is easy. You can send a letter using the mailing labels that you have OR you can write a letter online and even upload a photo! Your sponsorship also provides a Christmas celebration for your sponsored friend in their community, so although you are welcome to send a small gift, it's certainly not necessary. A letter is perfect! Emmie Thomas' family sent a family Christmas card and their sponsored child loved seeing a picture of their whole family. To send a letter online, go to www.cfcausa.org: -Go to My CFCA/ Manage Account -Click on My Sponsorship -Login or register if you haven't done this before; you'll need your CFCA ID number -Select a fun letter template and write a note! -Upload your family Christmas card or photo you want to share Any questions, feel free to call CFCA at 800-875-6564. You should receive a letter from your sponsored child during the holiday season!
