ENGINEERING EXCELLENCE Traffic and Transport

n Efficient solutions
Increasingly scarce resources challenge designers to provide economically and ecologically efficient project solutions with regard to construction and operation. These solutions must have a low impact on nature and the environment, be acceptable to the directly affected population, affordable to society as well as comfortable, reliable and safe. To enable designers to meet the interIt is the aim of ILF Consulting Engineers to offer their clients complete in-house services for a project. When planning and carrying out such projects, ILF can draw upon specialist disciplines such as tunnelling, construction engineering, water engineering, mechanical and electrical engineering, geology and environment, occupational safety and health management. Mobility is t h e f u t u r e
Mobility for all people for improving the quality of life, while at the same time using natural and economic resources sensibly, is essentially what society demands of a modern transport infrastructure. Designing and building sustainable transport routes create the preconditions for meeting the public and private sectors ever growing needs for mobility, for maintaining and improving the quality of green and residential space and for preserving and enhancing the attractiveness of business locations. disciplinary requirements, it is necessary to use team- and target-oriented work methods and swift design processes. This approach guarantees top-quality and cost-focussed solutions that are completed on time while taking account of all aspects of a transport and traffic project such as design and construction, nature and environment, transport and operation. From the start, ILFs corporate philosophy has enabled its engineers to successfully complete a wide range of transport and traffic projects in railway, road and airport construction to the fullest satisfaction of its clients. ILF employs qualified engineers with many years of experience in designing and providing expert support to transport projects, using comprehensive specialist software and organisational measures in line with quality assurance principles.

As mobility is increasingly shifting towards private motorised transport, the road in all its forms - from access roads to motorways - constitutes the most important element of a modern traffic and transport system.

n Transportation mode: road

Today, the design and construction of roads not only requires expert qualification but also special environmental awareness, and as such constitutes an essential prerequisite for the feasibility of road and motorway projects.

n I LFs design services for road and motorway projects include the following:
S tudies of alternatives, route selection procedures, feasibility studies and economic analyses P reliminary design P ermit application design and design documents for the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and all other permitting procedures, as well as assisting the Client in these procedures T ender design and tender evaluation C onceptual, detailed and construction design C oordination of all parties involved in the design throughout all design stages S upport of PR activities P roject management C onstruction supervision C onstruction management

Roads and motorways

Adhering to this principle, ILF Consulting Engineers have rendered design and consulting services for many successful road construction projects in the past years. These projects have included the construction, upgrade and rehabilitation of cycle paths, park & ride facilities, and roads from local highways through to major trunk connections and motorways. ILF Consulting Engineers ensure overall project success by integrating qualified experts, available mostly in-house, into the design team. Other focal points of road projects are the organisation and conduct of public relations activities that ILF carries out together with experienced professionals after contract award.

Modernisation and construction of railway routes

n Transportation mode: rail
The growing need for mobility and the evident limits of growth, with the resulting call for environmental protection and conservation of natural resources, bring railway transport back into focus. The attractiveness of railway transport can only be increased by implementing a wide range of measures aimed at creating and maintaining a modern rail infrastructure. ILF Consulting Engineers design services have contributed significantly to the success of numerous projects carried out in many different countries to the satisfaction of the customers. The services encompass both the construction of new high-speed railway lines and the modernisation of existing lines for standard-gauge and narrow-gauge railways. Just as in road construction, in rail transport ILF pays great attention to an interdisciplinary project development and to the protection of the environment.

n For the design and support of railway projects, ILF Consulting Engineers offer the following services:
Studies of alternatives, route selection procedures, feasibility studies and economic analyses Railway operational studies Preliminary design Permit application design and design documents for EIA and all other permitting procedures, as well as assisting the Client in these procedures Tender design and tender evaluation Conceptual, detailed and construction design Cut and fill optimisation and logistics concepts Track geometry analysis and route optimisation in existing tunnels with the objective of minimising construction measures to create a greater kinematic envelope (e.g. truck-on-train service or combined transport) Coordination of all parties involved in the design throughout all design stages Support of PR activities Project management Project control tasks Application documents for operating permits and line closures Documents and data for agreements under administrative law and private law C onstruction supervision C onstruction management

n Urban transport systems

The quality of public transport significantly influences the attractiveness of large cities in terms of housing, living and working. In order to perform the design tasks involved in these projects in a professional manner, ILF draws upon its pool of qualified designers with many years of experience in construction projects at home and abroad.

n ILFs scope of services includes:

S tudy of alternatives, feasibility studies and economic analyses P reliminary design P ermit application design for EIA and all other administrative and permitting procedures, as well as assisting the Client in these procedures T ender design and tender evaluation C onceptual, detailed and construction design C oordination of all parties involved in the design throughout all design phases S upport of PR activities C onstruction supervision C onstruction management

Underground a n d city railways

In order to meet future needs and to avoid such problems as traffic jams, additional traffic generated by the search for parking spaces, as well as noise and air pollution, many large cities today promote the use of underground and city railway systems. These transport systems are generally very complex in nature, requiring extensive engineering structures (tunnels, bridges, etc.) and imposing great demands on engineering offices as regards interdisciplinary project management. The scope of services includes underground and city railway systems, from modernising and upgrading existing lines to constructing new ones. ILF is also well versed in implementing projects which are realised under publicprivate partnerships.

n Rapidly growing airports

The significance of modern airports can best be understood by looking at the rapid increase in air traffic. The last ten years have seen a two-digit growth rate in air traffic, passenger and freight volumes, creating a pressing need for forward-looking concepts

n Noise control
Today, large parts of the population are exposed to traffic noise, which reduces their quality of life. When designing and building new traffic routes, noise protection plays an important role when it comes to public discussion and acceptance of infrastructure projects.

n ILFs scope of services includes:

Studies of alternatives and economic analyses Preliminary design Permit application design for EIA and all other administrative and permitting procedures, as well as assisting the Client in these procedures Tender design and tender evaluation Conceptual, detailed and construction design Support of PR activities

Noise protection is environmental protection

Noise control measures are increasingly also required along existing main traffic routes to protect current residential areas from steadily growing noise levels and to prepare prospective residential areas for development. ILF has long-standing project experience in developing and implementing effective and environmentally acceptable noise protection measures along traffic routes.

Safety a n d risk management

n Focus on safety
One of the fields of expertise where ILF is well known in Europe is safety and risk management, especially for road and railway tunnels as well as underground railways and other infrastructure projects. In recent years constructional safety measures and organisational requirements have become the central issues in permitting procedures. Triggered by catastrophic accidents such as the fires in the Montblanc and Tauern road tunnels and in Kaprun, safety issues have become the centre of public attention and play a decisive role in the design, construction and operation of modern infrastructure projects. In order to establish safety-specific design fundamentals and a sound decisionmaking basis, potential hazards and risks entailed in the operation or transport are systematically specified and quantified. This serves to establish the technical project requirements and to define them in the form of equipment concepts and basic emergency response strategies. Prior to opening the facility to traffic, these concepts are further developed into detailed organisation charts and emergency response plans. ILFs capabilities are based on many years of professional know-how, comprehensive international project experience and close contact across Europe with the bodies entrusted with the further development of safety and risk management.
