Overview Operational Excellence improving safety, reliability, and compliance performance while reducing costs through standardization, convergence, collaboration and the adoption of better operational practices. IBM Maximo for Oil and Gas is the market leading enterprise platform for enabling operational excellence. When we talk about operational excellence we are talking about how we can continuously improve our level of service at lower costs. This includes both our physical assets and equipment, human capital and how we use the data and information we have available to make better operational decisions. To do this, we need better Operational Intelligence which is a function of data and information quality, delivered across the right timescale. Without quality data, one does not have quality information or Operational Intelligence. Therefore, it is reasonable to conclude that if one wants to achieve Operational Excellence, one needs quality data, transformed into information based on the operating context (operating history, engineering and maintenance experience, market conditions, regulatory context, etc..) and delivering that information at the right time, across the right timescale from real time operational decisions to longer term capital asset acquisition or divestiture decisions. Enabling Operational Excellence and improving our operational intelligence requires deep industry expertise, standards and better practices embedded into the asset management software itself. IBM Maximo for Oil and Gas includes these types of better practices and industry specific capabilities.

for proposed solutions or losses associated to equipment downtime (planned or unplanned), provides insight into areas for improving availability and safety. Calibration1 Automates calibration processes, leverages traceability, improves compliance and work planning with an integrated approach. With the explosion in instrumented devices, being able to view calibration work along side other work drives efficiency from work planning, scheduling and execution as well as the positive impact it has on equipment reliability. Competency Management Improve competency assurance through capabilities for adding, modifying and updating competencies of the workforce, associate competency requirements to permit and certificate requirements, and identification and validation of competency requirements on job plans and work orders. Condition for Work Aggregates similar jobs across assets, groups of assets, areas or individual locations supporting opportunity maintenance. Identifying work that can be merged into unplanned or planned work, when equipment or systems need to be in a certain operating state improves efficiency, as well as equipment reliability. Contract Management Capabilities for managing many types of contacts associated with maintenance, repair, and overhaul materials and services. Functional areas supported include: purchase contracts, master contracts, warranty contracts, lease and rental contracts, labor rate contracts, payment schedules, term and conditions library, etc Control of Work Plan permits on work orders and job plans. Safety improvements can be achieved by including permit and certificate requirements in work orders and job plans. Pre-establishing these requirements improves efficiency and also addresses some of the aging workforce issues, as well as improves communication and collaboration between operations and maintenance. Defect Elimination Integrated approach to manage and eliminate mechanical defects. A standardized approach for operations and maintenance to record equipment defects, as well as real time systems, tied to services levels, improves the communication between these domains and engineering. Drilling and Completions Capabilities for managing drilling and completion operations work, including planned, unplanned and emergency for wells and downhole equipment. Functional areas supported include: planning, service requests and service items, safety, certificates, labor reporting, qualifications, labor, materials and tools, planning vs. actual costing, drilling logs, etc Failure Mode Effect and Criticality Analysis (FMECA) Investigations based application that supports and documents a failure analysis including failure mode, failure effect and criticality assessment. associated operating procedures and maintenance activities to monitor and/or prevent the failure mode from occurring in the first place. Failure Reporting - ISO 14224 based standard for Failure Mode Effects Analysis (FMEA) and Failure Reporting and Corrective Action (FRACAS) processes. The foundation to a good reliability program is a standardized better practice around failure reporting and root cause analysis. Extends failure reporting to include failure mechanism, barrier failures and component level failure reporting. GIS Spatial Integration1 Enables spatial visualization and analysis of work and asset objects. Many oil and gas companies use GIS software to provide geospatially enabled applications. Some of these GIS solutions capture asset information that is valuable for an asset management system. IBM Maximo for Oil and Gas enables bi-directional data exchange, providing valuable work and asset information from IBM Maximo to the GIS system and visa-versa. Hazards and Precautions Capabilities for managing hazards and precautions. Corporate and regulatory requirements specify that oil and gas companies classify hazards and hazardous zones across operational assets including drilling rigs, production platforms, pipeline infrastructure, refineries and petrochemical facilities. This best practice allows the enterprise to classify hazards, capture identification methods, hazard sources, references, regulatory relationships, tag out requirements, material safety data sheet references and any special certificate requirement. Managing hazards in an integrated way supports risk management and improved safety principles by provided greater visibility into risk associated to work requirements, in hazardous locations around hazardous assets and equipment. Improvements Managing continuous improvement programs like Six Sigma or similar methodologies. Providing an enterprise standard or better practice for capturing improvements at all levels, across all domains fundamentally becomes your continuous improvement program. Incident Management Integrated approach to work, and safety incident management. Incidents occur across organizations doing work around assets and equipment in challenging and hazardous locations. A better practice for capturing incidents exists an integrated solution with a work and asset management system and processes. Asset custodians get a view or trend of incidents in their area of responsibility, as well as status on corrective and preventative maintenance work. Investigations Supports incident and defect investigation required, e.g., Root Cause Failure Analysis (RCFA) or After Action Review (AAR). Not all incidents and defects are created equal. Therefore, as the enterprise determines its standard for investigating incidents and defects, an integrated investigation application is a better practice because it provides complete traceability into historical incidents, defects, work orders, etc supporting the investigation.

Linear Asset Modeling1 Model assets using linear models, e.g., drill strings, wells, and pipelines, improves data capture, exchange and analysis that cannot be achieved using hierarchical models. Many data elements associated to a linear asset, e.g., station and offset, or mile posts, are not relevant for a hierarchical asset. Some of these data elements are also dynamic, e.g., a leak, and need to be managed in different ways, some regulatory in nature. Capturing linear information in free form text fields within a hierarchical model is no longer effective or efficient. Better practices can model a linear asset based on features and attributes associated to a linear asset. Location and Work Details Characteristics such as physical location, engineering reference numbers, drawing IDs, safety zones, safety criticality, permitting requirements, the ability to report production losses against a work order or location, mean time before failure (MTBF), mean time to repair (MTTR), performance benchmarks and rich work order history. IBM Maximo for Oil and Gas workflow enables all fields within the database, therefore these additional details describing a location provides more operational intelligence and therefore enables better operational decision making. Management of Change Full management of change process capabilities, integrated with work management and other applications. If anything in our working environment is constant, it is change itself. Providing transparency and visibility across operations, maintenance and engineering domains of all types of changes, e.g., mechanical, operating procedures, maintenance job plans, improves communications and collaboration, driving more efficient operations. Materials Management Capabilities for managing maintenance, repair, and overhaul inventory. Functional areas supported include: item master, inspections for permit and certificate type requirements, storeroom management, inventory management, lot management, kitting, issues and transfers, condition codes, stocked tools, service items, cycle counting, ABC analysis, inventory costing, etc... Nonconformance Management Safety and reliability depend to a great extent on conformance to policy, engineering standards, regulatory requirements, and specifications and parameters that have been tested, proven safe, and approved. Maximo Oil and Gas provides nonconformance management capabilities designed to automate, manage, and streamline for identifying, evaluating, reviewing, and handling of nonconforming engineering specifications, materials, components, parts, and processes. Open Interoperability Enhanced, open industry standards integration for real time systems, engineering data through MIMOSA based services. Real time system integration from an instrument, data historian or other operational systems can trigger defects, incidents, inspection notification or other work orders into IBM Maximo. Additionally, other systems, including engineering systems, integrated in a bi-directional fashion can enable cross-domain workflows and process orchestration. With the significant increase of instrumented systems, this integration capability will increase in importance as companies embrace operational intelligence.

Operating Policy Governance application for structuring your operating policy, operating and maintenance strategies. Your operating policy is linked to your standard operating procedures and maintenance plans. Performance standards, regulatory drivers, predominant failure modes, production targets, etc dictate your operating policy. Operators Policy, integrated with work management, management of change and other asset management applications improves collaboration across operations, maintenance and engineering resources. Operating Procedures Capabilities for documented structured, step by step operating procedures instead of relying on unstructured text files. This approach better integrates operations and maintenance resources. For example, operating procedures can be placed into a maintenance job plan when work from both groups is required to complete work. This approach better supports compliance. Operating Procedures, integrated with work management, management of change and other asset management applications improves collaboration across operations, maintenance and engineering resources. Operators Log Electronic log used by shift operators for recording and qualifying events which occur during an individual's shift watch. The application tracks shift staffing, plant operating parameters, log entries, associated qualifying data, and web/document links on an individual plant unit and/or staff position basis. An Operators Log, integrated with work management, incident management and other asset management applications raises the bar for collaboration across operations, maintenance and engineering domains. Permit and Certificate Types Define permit types and certificates for use on job plans and work orders. A critical part of a safety culture is identifying the hazardous locations within our operating environment and the appropriate procedures for isolation and safety, e.g., permits and certificates. Having this capability integrated with work management planning and scheduling increases effectiveness of work management, as well as improves overall safety compliance. Planning and Scheduling1 In addition to pre-built, bi-directional integration adapters for Microsoft Project and Primavera scheduling tools, Maximo Scheduler provides operations and maintenance the ability to compare the resource load with resource availability to help ensure efficient resource usage and timely completion of operations procedures and activity as well as maintenance based work orders (all directly within the Maximo application). Operations and maintenance can create and manipulate schedules containing operational and maintenance activity, task, and work order combinations, view them in a Gantt chart with corresponding resource requirements, map dependencies, use advanced critical path methods and/or auto scheduling capabilities. Plant, Facility and Equipment Modeling ISO 14224 based engineering and asset specifications, establishes a common, standard approach for reliability and maintenance data capture, exchange and analysis. Standardization of location, asset and equipment referencing and asset classifications across the enterprise provides the foundation for measurement, benchmarking and continuous improvement within an enterprise and across the industry.
