A lot of enthusiasm for new ideas has always formed part of the success of HISPANOs Research & Development department. More than 40 years ago, in the early days, HISPANO created a pioneering double-decker bus. Nowadays, the new DIVO coach arises from the same tradition of originality and functionality. Every one of the vehicles created by HISPANO has brought new concepts to the passenger transport sector. A focus on technological development and innovation plays a central role in the company, providing added value in widely differing areas. The great interest and acclaim with which the city bus market has received the awarded habit model, designed by Pininfarina, which was Bus of the Year 2000 in Spain and runner-up in the prestigious Bus of the Year 2001 award in Europe, has marked a new stage in the concept of style and in no vatio n t hat dist in gu ish es all o f H IS PANO s produ c ts. No detail is born at random. It is not just a question of style and elegance. HISPANOs concern to meet the industrys requirements has led it to work hand in hand with prestigious research laboratories such as the INSIA , the INTA, the Higher Polytechnic Centre of the University of Zaragoza, Pininfarina Ricerca e Sviluppo, S.p.A, and with the main suppliers to the industry as well as with chassis manufacturers to develop a technologically and stylistically avant-garde coach. OBJECTIVES
To provide a benchmark of state-of-the-art technology and stylistic innovation, following the same line of work as that employed during the development of our successful habit city bus model. To create and develop a timeless, elegant vehicle in terms of design, one which will minimise the effect of depreciation and obsolescence, providing an invaluable service in transport fleets. To meticulously fulfil current norms and even anticipate future regulations thanks to an in-depth analysis of European legislation and our participation in European Commission Work Groups (COST Actions). To create a vehicle that satisfies the most demanding expectations in our three areas of action: The Travellers, The Operators and Our Partners (Chassis Manufacturers).

Why AERODYNAMICS are so important?

To move forward a vehicle must overcome the resistance of the air; this resistance depends on the external design of the vehicle. The ease with which a vehicle moves in the airflow is indicated by the product of its front surface and the aerodynamic coefficient Cx, a non-dimensional aerodynamic coefficient of resistance, determined by the exterior of each vehicle. Aerodynamics also affects passenger comfort: the design conditions the shape of the coach and, thus, the interior ventilation and the aerodynamic noise inside the passenger compartment. As for vehicle stability, largely influenced by the vehicles aerodynamic movements, this aspect is optimised as we explain in the following section. As one of the determining factors for saving fuel, reducing noise and optimising the stability of the DIVO, HISPANO has worked in close collaboration with the firm Pininfarina and the INTA (Spanish National Institute of Aerospace Technology) to achieve what is probably the best aerodynamic coefficient ever for a Luxury Touring Coach. The excellent aerodynamic coefficient is complemented by the level of soundproofing of the engine unit and low noise level in normal running c on diti ons, ac hi ev ing e xc e lle n t ge n e ral dri ving dy nami cs. An important aspect is the parametric analysis of Swing Movements which measures the dynamic behaviour of the vehicle to the impact of a side wind, that has come up with excellent results both in theory and practice.

Minimising vibrations and noise levels


In most cases, the greatest problem with vibrations and noise occurs when the dynamic forces exerted on the structure alter its natural frequencies. By means of insulating the problematic parts and modifying the mass of critical elements so that the resonance and excitation frequencies are different, HISPANO has developed a reliable and versatile system for the reduction of vibrations and noise, with the introduction of chemical additives that optimise t he damping c oeff icients of visco-elastic mate rials.

Another important aspect is the close collaboration that chassis manufacturers and first component suppliers have offered us to resolve all possible sources of dynamic irregularities.

Passive Safety
As one of the main objectives of the project, the safety of the crew compartment has been maximised to increase the structural rigidity of this area 30% in comparison to conventional coaches. Thanks to this new design the vehicle is able to absorb front-side impacts in emergency situations. Another feature is that there is no drivers door on the left side and that the driving position is e xtra-e levate d to e nhanc e the afo reme ntion ed f eat ure s. It is well known that HISPANO was the first company in Spain to receive the Reg. 66 EC certification (behaviour of the structure in the event of rollover). In this new model a system of protective rings provides a practically nondeformable space for maximum passenger safety, using new materials, which allow the weight of the body and the way that it behaves in emergency situations, to be optimised.

From the very beginning of the project HISPANOs R+D department has analysed the current legal framework and future trends in the sector to define a vehicle which complies with the strictest requirements laid down by official approval bodies. These norms are, amongst others: > The 96/36/EC, 96/37/EC and 96/38/EC directives referring to seat anchorage and passenger safety systems (safety belts, safety belt attachment and seat design). > The 95/28/EC directive referring to the resistance of materials to fire. > Electromagnetic compatibility > Complete official European approval, type 2140

What do we offer in terms of comfort?
TO THE TRAVELLER The pleasure of travelling by coach is not just a question of a soundproofed vehicle, low vibrations, wide corridors and access doors. Our new DIVO coach includes real innovations such as: Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) illumination system which offer numerous advantages: Low consumption based on low voltage supply, which implies minimum temperature emission. It has a much quicker response (just a few milliseconds), when compared to fluorescent and halogen lamps and, in the same conditions of luminosity, the light is much clearer and brighter, absorbing any possible vibrations that may occur without lighting failures or variations. With regards to the durability and reliability of the LED system, its extraordinary performance can be seen in the following comparative tables:

Large luggage capacity inside With the largest luggage rack on the market, DIVO coach users can store their large-sized baggage without any problems. A 200 mm. opening and transverse section of 950 cm2 means that a standard professional attach case (450 x 330 x 100 mm.) fits into the luggage rack perfectly.

What do we offer in terms of comfort?


Climate control system by overpressure, providing total, constant air renewal. This system which is widely demanded by operators for the DIVO coach, keeps the air inside the vehicle clean without the feeling of a closed compartment. The system operates by means of a laminar airflow, which surrounds the passenger and provides a homogeneous temperature during long journeys.

TO THE CREW A SPACIOUS driver's area. The new driving post is not just ergonomic and comfortable. According to the first drivers who have had the opportunity to try it out, the new design and standard components such as radio control on the steering wheel or hands-free telephone kit, provide top quality driving. The guides seat moves 70 mm longitudinally allowing the seat back to be reclined and making it one of the most comfortable on the market. A drivers independent climate system by means of a hot demister equipment, which adapts to the needs of the driver and guide areas and operates by means of interior and exterior air flows, as well as using recirculated air. In extreme conditions, there is a quick demisting position for safer driving. Linear architecture front windscreen, especially designed for optimum water and air evacuation. Both first row passengers and professional drivers are of the opinion that the DIVO windscreen offers the best visibility on the market. The state-of-the-art windscreen wiper system is able to wipe 75% of the windscreens surface area, permitting high quality driving in inclement weather conditions.

The protective wheel arches have been developed in non-metallic, light PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride), officially approved and tested by the main automotive companies and providing zero-corrosion and minimum replacement time. This area also houses tight boxes to store tools. As we have previously mentioned, the new front windscreen design has taken into account different criteria: - Dimensional optimisation for a reduction in costs, breakage and easy replacement. - The innovative wedged front-end ensures maximum visibility. This fact has been corroborated in a survey carried out amongst professional drivers. All of the vehicles basic maintenance can be carried out from the outside, optimising technical off-the-road times.

The components used in developing the DIVO coach are supplied by leading companies in the automobile industry. This means that there is a worldwide technical assistance and spare parts network, as well as standardised maintenance and operating systems. The vehicles technical documentation comprises a series of printed documents and digital aids, which provide comprehensive information on the coachs characteristics to allow preventive and corrective maintenance to be carried out. You can ask for these manuals from HISPANOs Aftersales department, through the Internet. Finally, af te r analysing the total vehicle cost component: [Purchase price + Maintenance cost + Expected resale price] It can be stated that with its magnificent balance between quality and price, an optimum maintenance system, and excellent expected resale price (given the timeless Pininfarina design) the new DIVO Coach is a truly profitable asset for transport operators.
