CLINICIAN BIOGRAPHIES
Helen Kemp has been training singers, teachers and conductors in the art of choral singing for over 7 decades. A specialist in the area of training young voices, she has served as guest conductor and clinician in all 50 states and around the world. A hallmark of her work is her ability to empower dedicated volunteers to be successful choir directors, and to present techniques so solid and engaging that highly trained professionals continue to learn from her. With her late husband John Kemp, she served two tenures on the faculty of Westminster Choir College where she was named professor emerita of voice and church music. Pearl Shangkuan is a professor of music at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where she directs choirs and teaches choral conducting and choral literature. She is also the chorusmaster (Covenant Chair) of the Grand Rapids Symphony and has her own signature choral series with earthsongs. Prior to her appointment at Calvin College, she taught at Rutgers University and at the Westminster Conservatory of Music of Rider University. Michael Kemp has served for 14 years as both choral and orchestral director of Germantown Academy in Ft. Washington, Pennsylvania. His book, The Choral Challenge: Practical Paths to Solving Problems, received rave reviews in the Choral Journal, April 2010. His next book, Enhancing the Skills of Community, Church, and High School Choirs will be available soon. Andre J. Thomas, the Owen F. Sellers Professor of Music, is Director of Choral Activities and Professor of Choral Music Education at The Florida State University. He is in demand as a choral adjudicator, clinician, and director of Honor/All-State Choirs throughout the United States, Europe, Asia, New Zealand, and Australia. Jeffrey Brillhart is Director of Music and Fine Arts at Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church, Bryn Mawr, PA and on the music faculty at Yale University, where he teaches organ improvisation. He is also Artistic Director of Philadelphia's famed Singing City Choir. Further studies with Olivier Latry and Philippe Lefebvre in organ improvisation led to his winning first prize in the American Guild of Organists' National Competition in Organ Improvisation in 1994. Tom T. Shelton is an Assistant Professor of Sacred Music at Westminster Choir College of Rider University. He was selected as Teacher of the Year by two separate middle schools, and in 1999 he was awarded the North Carolina Middle School Music Teacher of the Year by the North Carolina Music Educators Association.
