Hamilton coaches named to Hall of Fame

Two Hamilton High School football coaches were named to the Hall of Fame. Former head football Coach Stan Grove was named to the National High School Athletic Coaches Association Hall of Fame and former assistant football coach Doug Destache was named to the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association (WFCA) Hall of Fame. Science beyond the textbook

Professor describes trends to students
Dr. Howard Jacob once ran through a police blockade in Germany just to talk about genetics. His DNA sequencing of an ill child who hadnt eaten in nine months led to a bone marrow transplant and allowed the boy to devour a steak 42 days later. In mid-November, he worked 31 hours straight from Saturday morning to 4 a.m. Monday. Im fine with that, he said. And Menomonee Falls High School was fine with listening. Science was cool. Not that it wasnt before, but this wasnt your run-of-the-mill textbook science lecture some students expected to be a drag, even for the Healthcare Academy. We were expecting a big science talk. He made it interesting. He articulated why he was so passionate about what he does, said senior Samantha Schlicht, an aspiring physicians assistant. Jacob is a rock star of science and medicine. Hes a nationally sought after speaker once featured on Nova, is a professor and director of the Human and Molecular Genetics Center at the Medical College of Wisconsin and is a vice chair of Research in the Department of Pediatrics at Childrens Hospital of Wisconsin. Science teachers Amanda Gilman and Dana Kopatich met Jacob last summer while taking a class at the medical college. They took a chance and ask if he would come to speak, and he agreed. Students will never forget it. Jacob was interactive and down-to-earth, and he answered all of the students questions. He turned everything back on us what are our opinions on the topic, said senior Emily Suetholz, who wants to be an anesthesiologist or pediatrician. It was an honor he was here. Its a oncein-a-lifetime thing, said senior Dia Vang, an aspiring nurse. Jacob told students 20 percent of people taking a popular heart attack drug at $1,500 per month arent receiving any benefit because they dont have the right gene for the medicine to help. Reading a persons entire genetic code has gone from costing billions of dollars to a thousand, and, typical of technology, the price keeps coming down. Jacob said in a couple of years it will cost $200 to read an entire human genome in 20 minutes. You can prick your finger and it will read your DNA for you. Thats insane, said senior Jackie DeWalt. After the presentation its really hitting me. Our kids could be getting sequenced. Jacob brought up moral, ethical, religious and political issues that will be addressed in these teens lifetimes. Should your parents know if youre at risk for Alzheimers? he said. What if you dont want to know? How much medical information life insurance companies should have and how they may use it, living wills and pulling the plug if someone is on life support which Jacob said he would have a hard time doing should his teen daughters ever be in such a situation. Laws are going to be written on this, he said. Pay attention. Jacob paid attention enough to get to college. He didnt like school, but he wanted to be a scientist since he was 5. He determined to get through it, and the rest is history. I dont go to work a day in my life. I love what I do, he said. Beyond the science, that was Jacobs key message: Find your passion and do it. We hope we find a career like that, said DeWalt. He found his, and Menomonee Falls students are looking for theirs. DeWalt thought he found it in wanting to become a doctor, but Jacobs candid line of 26 years of school has the senior looking into occupational therapy instead. This wasnt learning from a textbook, though Jacob could be considered a walking open one. This was a real scientist who answered questions about work-family balance and paying for college. Were learning from a person that wrote the books, DeWalt said. It was more personal because he was right there, said Vang. Story provided by the School District of Menomonee Falls

BBB: Computer tech support scams continue

Milwaukee, Wis. The Better Business Bureau Serving Wisconsin (BBB) is alerting consumers of a phone scam in which the caller claims to be from Microsoft or other companies Tech Support departments. The caller informs you that you have a computer virus and offers to fix it, all in an effort to gain remote control access to your computer. Those who allowed the caller remote access to their computer reported difficulties with their computer afterwards. Some said their computers suddenly had viruses, or particular software programs were no longer accessible. Reports to the BBB of this scam have been frequent for the last several weeks, indicating this old scam has resurfaced again. Most consumers reported taking their computers for repair following the phone call. Computer firms such as Microsoft do not make unsolicited phone calls to consumers to report computer problems or viruses, nor do they offer to diagnose and fix problems via telephone. We are concerned with the increase in reports from consumers that they lost money to these unknown scammers, says Ran Hoth, CEO/president of the Better Business Bureau Serving Wisconsin. If you receive such a call, the best advice is to say no and hang up. According to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), theyve been cracking down on these scams and they continue to investigate and prosecute them. If you paid for a bogus tech support service with a credit card, call your bank or credit card provider immediately to dispute the charge. What you should do if you receive a Tech Support call: * Dont trust cold calls. Never provide your credit card or financial information to anyone, over the phone that you dont know. * Take the callers information and report it to local law enforcement authorities and the FTC. * Install virus detection to help protect your computer from viruses. * Find a computer repair company you can trust. Find a BBB Accredited Business by business category at bbb.org. For more information or further inquiries, contact the Wisconsin BBB at www.wisconsin.bbb.org or 414-847-6000 (metro Milwaukee), 920-734-4352 (Appleton), 608268-2221 (Madison) or 1-800-273-1002 (elsewhere in Wisconsin). Consumers also can find more information about how to protect themselves from scams by following the Wisconsin BBB on Twitter, Facebook and YouTube. ABOUT BBB: For more than 100 years, Better Business Bureau has been helping consumers find businesses, brands and charities they can trust. In 2012, consumers turned to BBB 124 million times for Business Reviews on more than 4.5 million companies and Charity Reports on 11,000 charities, all available for free at bbb.org. The Council of Better Business Bureaus is the umbrella organization for 113 local, independent BBBs across the United States and Canada, as well as home to its national programs on dispute resolution and industry self-regulation.

St. Boniface Jump Rope Club begins fourth year

St. Boniface Catholic School, in Germantown, kicked off its fourth season of Jump Rope Club this school year. The non-competitive club promotes physical fitness while having fun and learning team work, coordination, and jump roping skills. Open to students in first through eighth grade, the club is 40 members strong. Jessica Mueller and Grace Maki are two eighth graders who have been a part of the club since the beginning. They now lead the advanced group of jumpers who practice such skills as The Wheel and Double Dutch. Its all about keeping rhythm, said Jessica. I love when kids are challenged and seeing how happy they become once they get it. Jessicas mother, Sue, is the energetic force that leads the club. Sue decided to lead the St. Boniface group because of her daughters love of jump roping. When Jessica was in first grade, the Fond Du Lac Wizards, a jump rope team that puts on demonstrations and clinics, performed at her birthday party. She was instantly hooked. When I was in fourth grade, I told my mom I thought it would be really cool if we could have a jump rope club at St. Boniface, said Jessica, smiling, and she did it. She made my dream come true. The club meets every first and third Wednesday of the month, October through May. At the end of the season, the St. Boniface community is invited to attend a show where the kids from all levels of expertise perform their skipping skills to music. For more information, please visit http://www.stbonifacewi.org/.

The mission of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program is to collect new, unwrapped toys and distribute those toys as Christmas gifts to needy children within communities. They try to deliver the message of hope to needy youngsters that will motivate them to grow into responsible, productive, patriotic citizens and community leaders. Toys for Tots helps needy children throughout the United States experience the joy of Christmas; to play an active role in the development of one of our nation's most valuable natural resources - our children; to unite all members of local communities in a common cause for toy collection and distribution campaign; and to contribute to better communities in the future.

your tree simple by choosing one or two colors for the tree's dcor. For kids, decorate with their favorite color. Make tissuepaper flowers to place on your tree. All you need is tissue paper and pipe cleaners. For a tree that will help you remember the good times, hang mementos that you've collected throughout the year instead of traditional, often expensive ornaments. Choose knickknacks from family vacations, party pictures, favors from weddings or showers, or kids' arts and crafts projects. Hang holiday greeting cards from family and friends on your tree. To turn these trinkets into ornaments, glue or attach ornament hangers to each item. Your tree will be a reminder of the fun shared throughout the year.

For a more international feel, use inexpensive wrapping paper to make origami cranes -- symbols of peace. Paper birds of all sizes will look beautiful on your tree and can be a fun project for the whole family.

Germantown board approves surveillance cameras at elementary schools

The Germantown School Board approved the installation of several capital items Nov. 25. The board approved a motion that will allow for the installation of surveillance cameras at all elementary schools at a cost of $240,000. The board also approved finishing the chorus room risers at a cost of $37,000. The board tabled a request to replace the upper gym floor at Germantown High School in space that is also used for concerts, with bleachers rolled out onto the floor. Board member Brian Medved noted that LifeChurch has offered their facility for concert performances. He also noted that a synthetic gym floor could be laid on the existing floor. "I think we need to consider the idea of what we're doing there," Medved said. Board member Michael Loth added that the problem with the current gym floor is that it cannot support the weight of the bleachers. Holmes added that the bleachers will not be used for concert performances. Holmes noted that the district has not received a formal written request from the church. He said a meeting is planned to discuss the offer with the church. The money for the projects will come from the district Fund 41 Capital Projects Funds along with $73,000 from two previous bond issues. By Thomas J. McKillen, Managing Editor

PET OF THE WEEK

Who does this boy remind you of? Well he reminds us of a male version of Martha from the TV show "Martha Speaks." Did you know that Martha talks to children about pet adoption and responsibilties of pet ownership - what an awesome role model for our youngsters. This boy couldn't be a bigger love bug! He is one smart boy; he knows sit, down, shake and beg. He is good with dogs and cats. He does have a zest for life so we ask that he go to a home with kids over the age of 6. Come in today and meet KC.

Tip of the Week: If you light a fire or plug in a space heater to keep your home toasty warm,
remember that the heat will be as attractive to your pets as to you. As your dog or cat snuggles up to the warmth, keep an eye out to make sure that no tails or paws come in contact with flames, heating coils, or hot surfaces. Pets can either burn themselves or knock a heat source over and put the entire household in danger. License Number #266935-DS

HOLIDAYS IN
Today's column is about oral cancer. One of our wonderful patients was diagnosed with tonsillar cancer and is undergoing surgery, chemotherapy and radiation and we send our prayers for a speedy and full recovery! It is important to remind our readership about one of the many important reasons to see their dentist regularly. According to the Oral Cancer Foundation there will be 42,000 Americans that receive a diagnosis of oral or pharyngeal cancer this year and this will result in 8000 deaths. Oral cancer is a group of cancers that involve the head and neck and are found to be squamous cell carcinoma in 90% of cases. Squamous cell carcinomas have a much greater chance of spreading (or metastasizing) in comparison to basal cell carcinomas. The lesion is often asymptomatic which makes oral cancer screenings imperative. It most commonly appears as a reddish skin plaque or ulcer that grows slowly. A cancer cell is one that doesn't turn off and keeps multiplying as a result of a genetic mutation to genes. These cells cannot repair themselves. Where can oral cancer appear in my mouth? Oral or mouth cancer most commonly involves the tongue. It may also occur on the floor of the mouth, cheek lining, gums , the roof of one's mouth, or the lips. They may arise from many types of tissue in the mouth including salivary glands and lymph tissue. What should I look for? Keep your eye out for a skin lesion, lump, or ulcer that does not go away for around 2 weeks. This may be a small lesion on the tongue, lip, or other mouth areas. It is usually pale colored, but potentially could be dark or discolored. An early warning sign may be a white patch called a "leukoplakia" or a red patch known as an "erythroplakia" on the soft tissues of the mouth. These lesions are usually painless initially, however, it may develop a burning sensation or pain when the tumor is advanced. Other symptoms to look for are tongue problems, hard time swallowing, and mouth sores. Pain may be a late symptom but most often oral cancers are painless. How can a dentist tell if a lesion is cancerous or not? A dentist can identify a potentially cancerous lesion. However, a biopsy is the only way to know for sure. Benign and malignant lesions can look identical to the eye. A noninvasive brush biopsy can be performed to rule out the presence of cancerous cells. The only definitive method for determining if cancerous or precancerous cells are present is through biopsy. The cells will then undergo microscopic evaluation to determine if they are indeed cancerous. What will happen if a lesion in my mouth is determined to be cancerous? Often times, all that is necessary is for a small sugical

Village of Jackson dedicates park and ride lot

After years of creating plans and gathering support, a park and ride lot and multi-use path was formally dedicated in the village of Jackson earlier this fall. The park and ride lot which has 131 total stalls is located on Apple Lane directly across from the Lake Hasmer access. A formal dedication was held Oct. 19 which included the presentation of colors by Boy Scout Troop 765. This has been a project that has been in the works before I was village president and its just nice to come to a conclusion, Jackson Village President Wendy Kannenberg said during the presentation. Brian Kober, director of public works for the village of Jackson, said the village received a Congestion, Mitigation and Air Quality grant in 2008 for the project. The project included the removal of a duplex and seeking approval of two Chapter 30 permits to adjust the floodplain to make the project possible. In addition, the property was inspected to see if there were any pioneer remnants that would be of historical value. Kober said that the project is designed so that someone could park their vehicle in the park and ride lot and then get on their bicycles and take the path all the way through key parts of the village. The path connects the park and ride lot to paths near a gas station and underneath Hwy. 45 which can lead to businesses west of the highway. The path will be maintained by the village. Were creating things that people can do for enjoyment and recreation. You have to start someplace to fulfill that commitment, Kober said. Afterward, Kober said the property previously included the duplex, several apple trees, and an outlot. Kober said it took the village approximately a year to get the grant. Kober said the Chapter 30 permit was needed to allow the village to move the floodplain. Kober said final approvals to allow the project to proceed were given in April. Once we got approvals, it didnt take long to construct it, Kober said. Kelly Valentino, Jackson joint parks and recreation director, noted the project is adjacent to Hwy. 45 and touted the potential economic benefits of the new development. The Baxter & Woodman firm provided engineering for the project. By Thomas J. McKillen, Managing Editor

incision to be made to remove the lesion from the area in question. Radiation with or without chemotherapy can also be used in conjunction depending on the severity, stage, and size of the lesion. What puts you at a higher risk for developing cancer? People that are over 50 that drink heavily and smoke are at higher risk for oral cancer. Other risk factors are people that have been diagnosed with HPV or Human Papilloma Virus; which is a sexually transmitted disease which Michael Douglas recently associated with his throat cancer. Patients with poor diets or having had a higher exposure to radiation may also be at higher risk. We hope you will go to your dentist or come to us for your complimentary oral cancer screening. This is a disease that can be caught early and treated with a high level of success. We look forward to meeting you. At Hampton Dental we perform an oral cancer screening every time we meet a new patient and at each re-care visit! You may see examples of our dentistry at www.winterdental.com If you would like to read Dr. Winter's published articles go to publications type in: Username: visitor and Password: smile to access his articles and read about Dr. Winter's treatment options. Free Admission to Christmas Silver Tea & Christmas Cookie Sale The Miller-Davidson House at Old Falls Village will be festively-decorated in a Depression-Era Christmas theme of the 1930s for the holidays and open for visitors on Sunday, December 8 from 1-4 p.m. for the annual Silver Tea. The Menomonee Falls Historical Society will offer free admission, parking and refreshments for this event. Donations are gratefully accepted. A Christmas Cookie Bake Sale will be held in the Public House. Mrs. Santa will pay a visit and read stories to the children. Tour this lovely, restored home which was once the summer home of Emma Davidson of Harley-Davidson. Ladies, gentlemen and children will enjoy tea, coffee and homemade Christmas cookies as they savor the sights and smells of days gone by. The home will be decorated by the Menomonee Falls Garden Club and supported by Bank of Memories & Flowers and Shady Lane Greenhouse. The Miller-Davidson house anchors the 22 acre historical park at Old Falls Village. Built in 1858 in the Greek Revival style popular at the time, the house is built of locally quarried limestone with mortar lime coming from the lime kilns. The Miller-Davidson House, original to the site, is special in many ways beginning with an unusual arched foundation. In 1935 it was selected by the Federal Government's Historic American Building Survey. And in 1973 the National Register of Historic Places listed this beautiful early American farm home among those to be preserved for future generations. The house has not been restored to its original state but is presented as a house improved as lifestyles improved. It now houses an eclectic decorative arts collection. Old Falls Village is located at the corner of Hwy. Q and Pilgrim Road in Menomonee Falls. See www.oldfallsvillage.com for more information. Falls Patio Players holding auditions Dec. 9 and 10 Falls Patio Players is holding auditions for a cast of five women to play ages 35-70 for "The Dixie Swim Club. Show dates are Feb. 7, 8,14 and 15 at 7:30 p.m. and Feb. 16 at 2 p.m. Six tons of plastic collected Oct. 19 More than 12,000 pounds (6 tons) of plastic was diverted from the landfill and recycled through a collaboration with Johnson's Nursery, Inc. and Waukesha County at Johnson's Nursery, Inc. of Menomonee Falls. This recycling initiative held on Oct. 19 was open to both businesses and residents. "This recycling event provided local residents and businesses an opportunity to dispose of their landscape plastics sustainably," said Mr. Chad Johnson, President and owner of Johnson's Nursery, Inc. "We at Johnson's Nursery, Inc. are working to close the loop to continue our strong stewardship through best environmental practices." Residents and businesses were able to bring used plastic growing pots, plant trays, and plant containers free of charge for recycling. Three different types of plastics, high density polyethylene (#2), polypropylene (#5) and polystyrene (#6), make up most of these landscape plastics and were separated and palletized on site by Johnson's Nursery staff. A total of 52 half pallets totaling 6 tons of plastics were picked up on November 7, 2013 by East Jordan Plastics, Inc. of East Jordan, Michigan, one of the largest manufacturers of horticultural containers in North America. Johnson's Nursery, Inc. also has another 52 half pallets of these plastics that will soon be ready for pick up for recycling which will likely double these numbers and double the amount of plastics diverted from the landfill. or bird watcher. Light up your winter containers. Fill a weather-proof planter with potting mix or play sand. Purchase greens from your favorite garden center or trim a few from your landscape. Stick the cut end of the greens in the potting mix or sand to create an attractive display. Add some colorful berries, decorative twigs and ribbon. Then add some height and light to your winter container with fiber optic solar lights. Place the container by your front steps for holiday visitors to enjoy day or night. Increase color and motion with the help of heated birdbaths. Attract greater numbers and variety of birds by providing water year round. Northern gardeners should consider heated birdbaths to insure water is available even during the coldest months. Further help the birds by adding a few stones or branches to the birdbath. This allows the birds to drink without getting wet; helping them to preserve their body heat. Create your own homemade outdoor lights. Line pathways, accent plantings or dress up fence posts with ice globe luminaries. Produce your own or purchase ready to make kits. Use colorful outdoor LED lights or tea candles to light up blocks or spheres of ice. You and your family will have fun creating these memorable nighttime accents. Add some livable art. Hang a few colorful and unique birdhouses in your backyard. They provide color and whimsy to the winter garden and will be ready for your feathered friends to move in this spring. Include a gingerbread house for the birds. Hang decorative birdseed houses from a shepherds crook or tree branch. Be sure to place it in an area where you and the birds can enjoy the decorative treat. Look for a sheltered, but open area where the birds can watch for predators while enjoying their winter feast. Move your holiday tree outdoors. Place your cut tree in a snow bank, vacant spot in the garden or make it part of your bird feeding station. The tree provides some extra greenery in the often drab winter landscape as well as shelter for the visiting birds. Then add a few of those birdseed ornaments for added food and winter decoration. Boys basketball: Hamilton opens season with two wins

Brady Ellingson got off to a fast start for Hamilton, scoring 32 points as the Chargers topped Waukesha Catholic Memorial 60-36 in the Nov. 22 season opener. Ellilngson opened the game with a threepoint basket and converted 11 of 22 field goal attempts. A layup by Ellingson with 6:01 left in the second quarter gave Hamilton 21-10 lead. The Chargers then held a lead between nine and 11 points throughout the rest of the quarter. Hamilton then outscored the Crusaders in the third and fourth quarters to seal its first win of the season. Dan Lunowa and Mitch Gervain both added six points for the Chargers. Afterwards, Hamilton Coach Andy Cerroni noted that Ellingson is the only player who started all of last of season. "We didn't know what to expect," Cerroni said, noting that Catholic Memorial had eighth returning letter winners. Cerroni said he came in wanting his team to come out ahead with more rebounds and opportunities at the free throw line. Hamilton followed that win with a 55-32 victory over Lake Mills Nov. 26. Ellingson led Hamilton with 18 points while Jacob Rink added 11 points.

Boys hockey: Ice Bears split first two games

The Ice Bears rebounded with a 4-3 win over Greendale the next evening. The Bears trailed 3-2 after two periods but a third period goal sent the game into over time, where the Bears scored to win their first game of the season. The Ice Bears are comprised of players from Menomonee Falls, Germantown, Hamilton, Hartford, Slinger and West Bend high schools. The team plays its home games at the Kettle Moraine Ice Center in West Bend.

Heres what your neighbors are saying about Team McKenzie...

As soon to be empty nesters we started thinking about selling our home last winter. To see what our home was worth and what we should do to prep it for sale, we called Steve McKenzie with RE/MAX. He had the home listed when we bought it and we were also impressed by Steves marketing and how many homes he sells in our area. Steve provided us with a comprehensive analysis of our homes value and we were pleasantly surprised with the number he said hed list our home for! Additionally, Steve and Denises staging recommendations and assistance helped us understand what we needed to do to maximize our homes value for minimal expense and inconvenience. They helped link us to the vendors we needed which made the staging process much easier. We listed in July and Steves marketing immediately created lots of online and showing activity. We received two offers which afforded us the opportunity to negotiate a sale for $1,500.00 above our list price in less than a week. Thirty days later we closed without a hitch allowing us to relocate and buy our new home ahead of schedule. Steve and Denise were great to deal with, always kept us informed and were on the top of things from beginning to end. We strongly recommend Team McKenzie to anyone who needs assistance in staging and selling their home and would like to have a wonderful experience when doing so!
