High School Science Safety Contract

PURPOSE
An important part of any science course consists of exploration and analysis in the lab. Laboratory experiences are integrated into this course because true understanding of scientific skills and fundamental principles are best learned through investigation and discussion. Therefore it is crucial that students both understand and use safe practices in the laboratory. Laboratory safety is essentially common sense. It is the responsibility of the students to know the potential hazards of the materials used in the laboratory, as well as the proper techni ues for using lab e uipment safely. !afety rules must be followed at all times. "o science student will be allowed to participate in science activities until this safety contract has been signed by both the student and a parent or guardian.

The responsibility to maintain a safe working environment lies with all of us. GENERAL SAFETY RULES
#e expect all students to work safely in our laboratories. It is your responsibility as a student in this course to understand and follow all rules listed below. $. To protect your eyesight, always wear approved goggles whenever you are working with chemicals, open flame or heated materials. %our instructor will indicate any additional situations that will re uire you to wear eye protection. &. Any article of clothing or 'ewelry that can hang down and touch open flames or chemicals must be removed or secured before beginning lab work. Long hair must be tied back to keep it away from flames, chemicals, and lab e uipment. (pen shoes or sandals are not appropriate for a laboratory environment. ). "ever perform unauthorized experiments or use any e uipment or instruments without proper instruction and permission. *ollow all instructions given by your instructor including special instructions for individual experiments. +. ,o not enter the supply rooms. ,o not remove any e uipment from the lab without the permission of the instructor. -. *ood and drink are not permitted in laboratories. .. /e alert and on task at all times in the lab. 0orseplay and reckless conduct have no place in a laboratory. ,o not leave your assigned lab station and wander about the lab causing distraction or interfering with other students. 1. 2eep your work area neat and clean. /ring only your laboratory instructions, worksheets, and writing instruments to the work area. 2eep aisles clear. 3ush your chair under the desk when not in use. 4. 5lean all work areas and e uipment at the end of the experiment. 6eturn all e uipment clean and in working order to the proper storage area. 7. Treat all live organisms and preserved specimen with care and respect.

ACCIDENTS
6eport ALL accidents and in'uries to your teacher immediately, no matter how harmless or trivial the in'ury may appear. $8. If a liquid s lashes into your eye9 "otify your instructor immediately: Immediately proceed to the eyewash station and rinse your eyes for at least fifteen minutes. Any contact lenses must be removed and thrown away. They may not be reinserted into the eye. $$. If a che!ical s lashes onto your s"in#clothes9 "otify your instructor immediately: 3roceed to the sink or safety shower and flush with running water for at least - minutes. $&. If your clothing catches on fire9 "otify your instructor immediately: !top, ,rop and 6oll: 6unning can feed the fire with more oxygen, and increase the intensity and size of the flames. The lab is e uipped with a fire blanket that can be used to extinguish such fires. $). If you are cut $y $ro"en glass or a shar i! le!ent9 "otify your instructor immediately: #ounds need to be cleaned and covered properly.

EQUIPMENT

Learn where to find and how to use common safety e uipment in the laboratory, including the eye wash, safety shower, fire blanket, fire extinguisher, and first aid kit. 2now where the exits are located and what to do in case of an emergency or fire drill. $-. ;sing lab e uipment safely usually involves following your <common sense=. *ollowing the guidelines listed here will help you develop some new <common sense= in situations you may or may not have experienced earlier in your life. #hen using sharp tools, always cut away from yourself. "ever reach across an open flame. Always point items being heated >such as a test tube? away from yourself and others. 5hemicals can boil up and splash out of openings. "ever look directly into the opening of a container that is being heated. "ever heat a closed container. @xpanding gases produced may blow the container apart. 0old the back of your hand near >but not touching:? a container that you have heated to check and see whether it is hot. If you feel heat, the container is too hot to handle. Hot glass looks the same as cold glass! Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth when handling chemicals. *ollow instructions for safe use of acids, bases, and other chemicals. #hen diluting acids, always add the acid to water, "(T the water to acid. "ever touch, taste or smell any chemical directly that you do not know for a fact is harmless. %our teacher will instruct you in the proper techni ue to waft an odor to your nose. ;se only the chemicals needed in a particular activity. 2eep the lids of all containers on while the chemical is not being used. "otify your teacher if any chemical is spilled. ,ispose of all chemicals as instructed by your teacher. "ever handle broken glass with your bare hands. A brush and dustpan will be used to clean up any broken glass, to be deposited into proper containers. #hen removing an electrical cord from an outlet, grasp the plug, not the

cord. %our hands should be dry before touching an electrical switch, plug, or outlet.
