Year: 2000 e. Recording Label: 16 inch Records I think this is a great selection for students because it incorporates an upbeat tempo and an unusual instrumenta digital synthesizer. This would be a song Id use while the students are transitioning from one activity to the next since it will encourage them to move at a similar pace as the music, and will hopefully discourage any standing around. 2. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XGPvGzfoJAg a. Title: Walking on Sunshine b. Composer: Aly & AJ c. Album: Into the Rush d. Year: 2005 e. Recording Label: Hollywood As a teacher, students come into the class half-awake and dreading their long day inside. This is the perfect song to wake every student up and get him or her on their feet singing and dancing so theyre more alert. Also, its difficult to listen to this song without instantaneously being put into a good mood! This is a fun way to start the day! 3. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Tr0otuiQuU a. Title: Moonlight Sonata No. 14 b. Composer: Beethoven c. Album: N/A d. Year: 1801 e. Recording Label: N/A This classical arrangement is a nice piece to serve as background music while the students are working on an assignment or doing independent reading. This piece has a soft dynamic that is calming, yet intriguing, but not distracting. I also find it interesting to introduce the students to how many different sounds one instrument is making in this selection. 4. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DkDff87CR9A

c. Album: Just Dance Kids 2 d. Year: 2011 e. Recording Label: RedOne I found this to be a fun, western-twist on the original Hokey Pokey. Of course, the dancing is mostly the same, but this seems like a fun way to encourage a few extra line-dance steps. It would be great to transition them from one activity after theyve become restless or to release some energy and continue the same lesson. 5. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N1KZbMprW8U a. b. c. d. e. Title: Siyahamba Composer: Andries van Tonder Album: N/A Year: circa 1950 Recording Label: Music Changes Lives

What a great way to show students how kids from another culture enjoy singing and dancing too! I thought this was a very likeable piece that is upbeat and energetic. The kids would have a great time dancing or just tapping along to the rhythm. 6. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xqrxW-pEq3Q (start at 40 seconds) a. Title: Monster Mash b. Composer: Paul Harrison c. Album: Monster Mash d. Year: 1962 e. Recording Label: Garpax This is a fun song to get student up and dancing around the room and getting rid of some energy. I think it would be a great song to do after an exhausting test or when the students are looking bored and need a quick break from the curriculum. It would be a fun song to split the kids in half and have them dance or sing complimentary parts. 7. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4vNcGlM8O3I a. Title: Carol of the Bells b. Composer: Mykola Leontovych c. Album: N/A d. Year: 1916 e. Recording Label: N/A

Having seen The Transiberian Orchestra perform this piece, I couldnt avoid including it to the list. This non-vocal selection serves as an ideal piece to play while children are working on a task. I think this may be too captivating to play while children are working on a new lesson because it may distract them, but I bet itd be great while they are working on a familiar worksheet. 8. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R7T9XS6p96c a. Title: The Old Dock Road b. Composer: Irish Jigs & Reels c. Album: The Best of Traditional Irish Dance Music d. Year: 2010 e. Recording Label: N/A This song utilizes wind instruments. While listening to this, I had my eyes closed and just imagined they were birds singing their song. I think this would be a great accompaniment to a science lesson about nature. 9. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wbuPPmf5DUI a. Title: Himno Nacional Argentino / Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika b. Lourens DeVilliers c. Album: N/A (futbol performance)

d. Year: 1813/ 1997 e. Recording Label: N/A Students could learn different styles of national anthems while focusing on the accent of the performers. This would be incorporated within a history, geography, or anthropology lesson. It gives the students a taste of their culture simply by listening to their national anthem. The students can draw comparisons between different countries music styles and hypothesize as to why they may occur. 10. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j3iq_6wd13s a. b. c. d. e. Title: Call Me Maybe (karaoke version) Composer: Josh Ramsay, Carly Rae Jepsen, Tavish Crowe Album: Call Me Maybe Year: 2012 Recording Label: Schoolboy Records

This familiar song will help kids enjoy the music, but doesnt have the distraction of the words. Its difficult to focus when all you can focus on are the lyricsthis karaoke version prevents that! This would be great to play when the kids are doing different stations or group activities so they dont try to sing the lyrics and lose focus.

Deeper Understanding: Monster Mash would be a great piece to focus on the dynamics and tempo of the song. The song would start with all students sitting in their chair. As the music gets louder, the dynamics increase, they can begin to stand. When the music starts to quiet down again, they have to decide how low to the ground they should go to display the dynamics of the music. The straighter they stand, the louder the music, the closer they are to sitting, the softer the music. As for tempo, this piece speeds up then slows down quickly. The children can move their arms at a pace to match the fastness/ slowness of the song. This will teach children to use their bodies to express the music through a meaningful dance. Siyahamba, as performed by the Mwamba Childrens Choir displays different expressive qualities. The tempo and dynamics contrast very well and the timbre is very unique. There would be different signs around the room featuring different options for tempo (fast, medium, slow), dynamics (very loud, loud, soft) , timber (happy, sad, yellow, blue, black, etc.). As the song is playing, one student would be selected to choose a card that would say, tempo dynamics or timbre. The child would read the card aloud and the music would stop. The students would move to the sign they believe described the respective word. The song would be turned on while the students continue to dance and then the activity would repeat itself through the entire length of the song.
