ETHICAL LEADERSHIP

Ethics means moral principles that control or influence a persons behavior. It also involves some moral values. A great leader can do nothing without ethical and moral principles. In all the fields of life, ethical values have their own place. A.N. Whitehead said, What is morality in any given time or place? It is what the majority then and there happen to like and immorality is what they dislike. Values (ethical and moral) are the main and most important part of the structure of society. In a morally sound, economically strong and socially organized society, there are certain moral and ethical codes to be followed. In an Islamic society like ours, we follow the Islamic codes of ethics. Our religion is endowed with the complete code of life in the form of our Holy Book. It guides us in all matters of life, whether they are religious, social, economic, political or moral. The structure of such a society that follows glorious path is surely expected to be well balanced and harmonious. Such a society can create the individuals who have high leadership qualities. A common more can become a great leader by living in such a society. Whenever forces of gloom and darkness tend to over whelm man, there appears on the scene some great personality who strives to stem the tide of these evil forces and to help man in combating all that is ignoble and impure. Such a personality is endowed with all moral and ethical values. He can lead the nation through thick and thin. Ethical, moral and spiritual values create a great courage in him to bear the havocs of ignorance. There are certain criteria that must be met. For example being a good role model being dependable, being trust worthy, these are all things that a true leader must possess. However, all leaders have their strengths and weakness and these are a few areas in which men and women striving to become leaders often have trouble dealing with. All too often leaders become over defensive and it beings to tear away at the seams of a cohesive unit. A little defensive is healthy self-protectionlike your immune system. Excessive defensiveness will prevent you from learning from your mistakes after all, why do anything different, if all your mistakes are someone elses fault? Feeling angry because of change imposed fro m above? Attack the stupidity of your bosses and you will feel better! This move can be self-defeating if it stops you from understanding their rationale and coming to terms with your own resistance to change. If you have healthy self-esteem, you should be able to admit your mistake. If you have low selfesteem, you will either be too hard on yourself for even small mistakes, or you will over react and defensively never admit them! When you anticipate the failure of one of your projects, do you start telling people why it will fail? You are setting the fact. Advance defensiveness can even facilitate failure. Some people will even sabotage their own projects, when they start to

think they will fail, if they can do so in a way that ensures their getting off the hook. Recognizing and avoiding your own excessive defensiveness is not easy if you have developed a pattern of protecting a fragile self esteem in this way. However, you will not keep up with the demand in todays competitive market to learn faster if you do not confront this issue for yourself. Being a good leader is never an easy task, and only a few people have ability to lead. Not many people can take an organization, a team, or their local neighborhood and get them to work together towards a single goal. They have to be stern but at the same time sympathetic, they have to be able to delegate power without causing uproar. So many things go into being a leader that when everything is said and done, most people shy away from being a leader and feel as though they need to follow. However, that is the difference between a leader and a follower. When crunch time comes, the true leader will stand forward and guide his/her team, organization, or what have to victory. Now, as a nation we are badly lacking discipline, respect of law, integrity, honesty and amity we have missed our target and blurred our vision about future. The result is chaos, and we should not keep our eyes closed any more. Only ethical leadership can lead the nation in such circumstances. This is the best time to stand united and disciplined individually and collectively to fight against this moral and ethical deterioration and erosion. We have to tear a weary the mask of hypocrisy and get rid of selfishness. We should fight against racism, extremism and terrorism. It is also the duty of the government to implement the Islamic laws and train our present generation to assert practical virtue rather than verbal expression. The parents as well as teachers must guard and guide the inherent and inborn potential of their children and inculcate in them the spirit of sacrifice and love of Islamic values to avert moral erosion that is damaging the roots of our society and blemishing the face of the humanity. Ethical leadership can be obtained by following the above mentioned qualities. Only ethical leadership can provide such things to the society so that it may become a true nation.
