Brief History
Franklin stove, invented by Benjamin Franklin in 1741, is a more efficient type of wood-burning stove. Carl Johan Cronstedt is reported to have increased efficiency of woodburning stoves by a factor of eight in the mid-18th century.

Fact File

As mentioned in above graphics it is hereby evident that most of the rural population is still dependent on solid fuels namely firewood, crop residues, dung cake and coal, in which firewood is the most used solid fuel.

Some of the leading state in Solid fuel usage is mentioned in this bar chart.

Time spent in mean hours / day has been mentioned in this fact sheet by world Bank Report.

These are the causes and implications of collection of fuels and cooking as below:-

Findings
After analysing all scenarios, main findings are as follows: More than half of the Indians population cooks their food indoors using open fires or rudimentary stoves. Indoor burning of solid fuels releases toxic pollutants including particulate matter and carbon monoxide. These are harmful cooking practices. As the household members most likely to cook family meals, women and children are most affected.
