Fuel cells and hydrogen applications: the new frontier of sustainable mobility

Mr. Luciano GAUDIO Stakeholders Relationships Manager Bolzano, 19 September 2013

1

General context

Security of energy supply: Transport - largest oil consumer: 55% and rising Bulk of production in unstable regions New oil reserves expensive and polluting High oil import bill: Up to 1 billion per day in 2011 Trade balance deficit: ~ 2.5 % of GDP CO2 emissions from the transport sector: 25% of total EU CO2 emissions and the only sector rising Prerogative for EU transport industry: Maintain its global leadership

and what about maritime applications?

Horizon 2020
2014 - 2020

+/- 80 B Commission proposal for research and innovation programme 2014-2020

Responding to the economic crisis to invest in future jobs and growth Addressing peoples concerns about their livelihoods, safety and environment. Strengthening the EUs global position in research, innovation and technology

General statement: Industry might develop a roadmap for a PPP at EU level (under Horizon 2020) to focus maritime research on zero emission and energy efficient vessels for emerging market opportunities. Planning :
On-going : Parliament and Council negotiations on EU budget and Horizon 2020 proposal By end 2013 : Adoption of legislative acts by Parliament and Council on Horizon 2020

and what about maritime applications?

Clean Power for transport package
The Communication lays out a comprehensive alternative fuels strategy for Europe: Stable framework including minimum infrastructure Common EU standards Consumer information The options for the different modes: Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) Natural Gas and Bio-methane (in the forms of CNG, LNG and GTL) Hydrogen Electricity Biofuels (the only solution applicable to all modes but availability remains an issue)

Framework to guide investments and technological development => Confidence for investors & consumers

Infrastructure build-up by 2020

Minimum number of charging points for EVs per MS, at least 10% publicly accessible Minimum number of hydrogen refuelling stations along the TEN-T Core Network, with maximum distance of 300 km to allow the circulation of HFC vehicles. LNG refuelling points for vessels in all maritime ports and inland ports of the TEN-T Core Network LNG refuelling points for road transport vehicles along the TEN-T Core Network with a maximum distance of 400 km CNG refuelling points with maximum distances of 150 km
