Duplicating NATO cartridges (cloning)

* This page has a lot of misc info found throughout the web on duplicating military cartridge performance. This wil you a TON of time as I have collected all the relevant info in one place. -Cartridge, . !mm, "all, #$%& 'se( )ifles, #$!, #$!*$, #$!*+. )ight now I;m using in a +5< $-4< twist service rifle barrel( +55=&55 yard line( 44gr Nosler "T>0, +3.5gr )-$ , CCI ")3 primer, and -C brass !55 yard line( /5gr ?ierra #atch @ing, +3.5gr )-$ , CCI ")3 primer, and -apua brass. Though, I;m going to switch to "erger /5gr 7-,s since the price on ?ierra /5gr is pretty much the same now. If you want an #@+!+ mod $ duplicate, try( 44gr ?ierra #atch @ing, + .&gr 7arget, CCI 355 primer, and -C brass - NOT:( T>I? -O*, :AC::,? ?**#I ?0:C?. '?: IN N*TO O) .B-,: C>*#":) ON-B. '?: *T O.N )I?@. - +4/5C fps in an $/< ?0) barrel

DBI( Nosler 44gr will shoot a little faster than ?ierra 44gr with the same powder charge. It is probably due to the fac the Nosler has a shorter base to ogive length and thus has less bearing surface with the bore.

So if you want to stay within published max loads for safety looks like you might need a different powder. I get slightly hig than max velocity with slightly less than max load in my 20" !. "y standard ## gr $"% load is 2#.& gr of !!22'0 which me '2(0 fps. )he published max load is 2&.0 gr giving '2*& fps. So results vary a bit rifle to rifle. )he only "+ato ,ross" a I have ever chronied out of my rifle was 2000 headstamp -uatemalan and I got an average velocity of '22( fps.

If you want to switch to a different powder to easily achieve these mil spec velocities without having to run max loads ther several choices. here/s a few0 1owder............ published max load 2 velocity for ## gr $"% bullet eloader *#......max load 3 24.0c gr velocity 3 ''50 fps 6arget..............max load 3 27.#c gr velocity 3 ''4( fps 8(45#..............max load 3 2&.0c gr velocity 3 ''*# fps 9:-,;2<............max load 3 27.# gr velocity 3 ''*' fps !-=" -20*#......max load 3 2#.0 gr velocity 3 '24* fps !-=" -2(5#.....max load 3 2&.2c gr velocity 3 '27* fps 6-+*'#.............max load 3 2&.4c gr velocity 3 '2&4 fps I/m sure there are other possibilities as well.

I don/t think it matters if you want to play it safe. If the data is for a lighter weight case with a slightly larger volume then surely the same charge in heavier case would produce a higher velocity. )he problem is it will do so by producing a higher pressure as well. So it might not be the best way to get the "extra" velocity you want. If you like >7(4 or have a lot of it already or whatever is the reason you want to go with it. I think that is more important then pushing out the pills to some spec velocity. )he max velocity listed for >7(4 is 54? of the mil spec velocity. I"8@ that last 2? really doesn/t mean shit

Q. How do I duplicate US Military ammunition when handloading?

A. The following are the specifications for '? ?mall *rms ammunition. If you have a chronograph you simply loa

I/ve been working on a duplicate m*5' round for awhile now using accurate 22'0. I got some federal xm*5' a also some winchester #.#& m*5' spec ammo and chronographed it. >@@@@->AAAAA. its some hot stuff. )he winchester/s avg speed for # shots was '24#. and the federal was right at '2&0. )his is about #-& feet from th muBBle.

)he only way I can duplicate with accurate 22'0C,,I #.#& primersCfed brass is to go about a half grain over th max listed load. )hey list 2#gr max on a ##gr bullet. >ith 2#.2 grains I get somewhere around '*&0fps out of 20" barreled ! with a mil spec surplus upper. I/ve taken this load up to 2#.# grains in .* grain increments and pressure signs in the brass at the 2#.#gr level on a hot day. +o blown primers or split brass. but it was pushin

I/m convinced the military crimps the primers for no other reason than they don/t want them to blow out. "*5 loaded right at the limit. from what i/ve seen.

--

,urrently I reload ##gr 8ornady S1 and 7#gr 8ornady 9)81. I use 9oth rounds in my ! -*# with *07 )wist and my Savage *05 )wist. I played around with my press and found out that i was able to use both and only thing I had to change was the powder charge. --

I eHactly duplicated the #+!+ load with T*C, but it is very hot and I changed to N 35.

It was +! grains of T*C driven by a #agnum 0rimer with the Nosler cannelured 44 grain bullet. This came out at o +4 5 fps from a $! inch barrel. I didn;t have a problem with it but some of the primers were flattened. To dup the #+!+ using available powder I use the much more eHpensive N 35 and 7arget.

That said I use more T*C than any other powder because there is no reason to load this hot for plinIing, triggertime drills, and even shtf with !+ grain bullets.

Dor T*C I suggest + grains with a normal primer driving !+ grain bullets. That will more than approHimate #/ be easy on your gun. I load + different !+ grainer bullets, pull down #/ and 9olden .est !+ grain with cannelure --
