Johanna aYana' Bourkovt is a native of St Petenburg,
Russia Beginning her violin studies at the age of six in the
studio of Savely Shalman,Ms. Bourkova is a laureate of the
St. PetersburgOpen Competition of Young Violinists and the
Intemational Violin Competition in Murci4 Spain, as well as
the Society of American Musicians Competition. She
studied at the St. Petersburg Rimsky-Korsakov State
Conseratory Junior College with Elena Z'ay6eva for tvto
yeals until her family moved to the U.S., where she studied
with Alrnita and Roland Varros al the Music Institute of
Chicago. While a student of Almita Vamos, Ms. Bourkova
attended Oberlin Conservatory and later Northwestem
University School of Music, where she gradtabd summactm
laude in 2004. She received her Master of Music degree at
the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the studio of Vartan
Manoogian as a recipient of the Collins Wisconsin
Distinguished Fellowship. Ms. Bourkova performed with the
Northshore Chamber Orchestra and was a recipient of the
Winnetka Music Club scholarship- An active chamber
musician,Ms. Bourkovahas also servedas Concertmaster of
the American Chamber Strings at the Music Institute of
Chicago Northwestem University Symphony Orchestr4

Symphony Orchestra, the Mannes College for Music

the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra. She pmsued a
Professional Studies Diploma at the Mannes College for
Music as a student of Michelle Kim, the Assistant
Concertmaster of The New York Philharmonic, while she
was also a member of the Brooklyn Philharmonic. Appointed
to Assistant Concerfinaster with the Richmond Symphony
Orchestra in 2007, she joined the Honolulu Symphony with
her husbandPavel Morunov last year.
Joanna Morrison receivedher Bachelorand MastersDegree
from Boston University, studying with Leslie Pamas, Mike
Reynolds and GeorgeNeikrug. While in Boston, Joannawas
principal cetlist of the Indian Hill Symphony and a member
of the Boston Modern Orchesta Project. Joanna has been
awarded fellowships to Verbier Festival, where she played as
principal cellist on tours of Europe and the U.S., and to the
Aspen Music Fesfival, National Orchestral Institute, AIMS in
Graz the Intemational Festival Institute at Rormd Top,
Blossom Music Festival and the Cascade Music Festival.
Joanna has just completed her second season with the
Honolulu Symphony.
Pavel Morunov was educated at Gnessins' Russian State
Academy of Music in Moscow where he studied with the
renowned principle oboe player Anatoly Liubimov, and while
a student there Pavel was an associate of the symphony
orchesha of the Moscow opera theater, The New Opera He

left the country to pursue his education in Chicago, where
he received his Master of Music degree from Northwestem
University studying with with Ray Still. In 2003 Pavel was
awarded a Collins Distinguished Graduate Fellowship of
the Univenity of Wisconsin-Madison,and in 2005 he was
an oboe fellow at the Aspen Music Festival, where he also
received the English hom fellowship for the summers of
2006 and 2007. He is now a Doctoral degree candidate at
the University of Wisconsin at Madison School of Music;
recently he received Professional Studies Diploma from
Mannes College of Music, the division of the New School
University, where he studied with Elaine Douvas, principal
oboe player of the Metopolitan Opera. In 2008 Pavel
joined the Honolulu Symphony orchestra as English hom
player and currently is Acting Assistant Principal Oboe.
Pavel Morunov is Music Direclor for Pd llina WaL
Violisr Ethan Pernela, of Fairbanks Alaska, finished his
GraduateDiploma with Martha Katz at the New England
Conservatoryof Music in 2005. He receivedhis Bachelors
Degree in 2002 urld'erthe tutelage of James Dunham and
finished his Master's Degree in 2004 with honon in
Academics, Orchestra and Chamber Music at NEC. Mr.
Pemela has been invited to play with such orchestrasas St.
Louis Symphony, Oregon Symphony, New World
Syrnphony, Ponland Symphony, Aspen Festival Orchestra,
among others. As an active chamber musician, Mr. Pemela
participated in the NEC Honors Ensembles program under
the guidance of Eric Rosenblith in 2004 and has collaborated
with such artists as Donald Weilerstein. Katherine Murdock,
Natasha Brofsky, Borromeo String Quartet, and Mark Hill,
among others. He receivedthe opportunityto participatein
master classes with Robert Mann, Roger Tapping, Donald
Weilerstein, Joel Krosnick, Ronald Copes, Emerson String
Quafiet and Raphael Hillyer. Mr. Pemela recently toured
Asia with the Verbier FestivalChamberOrchestra. He was
also principal violist of the Verbier Festival Orchestrain
Switzerlandwhich also had a USA/Europeantour in the fall
of 2007. Previous summer festivals include the TAOS
School of Music, Yellow Bam, Kneisel Hall, Aspen Music
Festival and School, Musicorda, and lnterlochen Center for
the Arts. He rec€ntly completed his second seasonwith the
Honolulu Symphony.
