V. MAIN IDEA

DIRECTIONS: Underline the main idea in each paragraph.

1. It was Mark’s birthday. Mark invited his friends to a party. He


brought his friends to his house. Mark played the guitar and
harmonica for them. Then they played darts on the dart board. Mark
almost hit the bull’s eye. After the dart game, they went to the garden
and ate hotdogs, barbecue and spaghetti. Everyone had fun. It was
a wonderful party.

2. Timmy and Jose are brothers. They enjoy going to their uncle’s
farm in Batangas. On sunny days, they run after the goats and pigs.
They watch the chickens lay their eggs. They take turns riding the
carabao, Jolo. Sometimes they look for snails in the pond and put

in coral reef areas. Playing beach volleyball can also be a lot of fun.
It is also fun to look for shells. Some people like to dig holes and
make sandcastles. Some people go jogging, especially in the
morning. Others simply like to sunbathe.

4. Basketball players learn many skills when playing basketball.


They learn how to dribble and pass the ball. They learn to run fast to
keep up with their teammates. They also learn how to control the ball
so they can eventually shoot and score. They have to think and act fast
in stealing the ball from the other team. Most importantly, basketball
players learn how to work together with their teammates. Having
teamwork is more important than having good basketball players. A
team with all the players working together usually ends up winning the
game.

5. Changing the look of an old piece of furniture begins with the


removal the existing paint or finish. You can buy several products
designed for paint removal. After removing the paint, the piece must
be well sanded. Following the right steps can definitely turn an old
furniture piece into a welcomed addition to any home. The sanded
piece should be primed if necessary to eliminate any "bleeding
through" of the original color. The new paint should be applied neatly
and carefully, allowing for the appropriate amount of time for drying
before applying a second coat if needed. Depending on your
preference, you may want to add a clear coat to finish the job.
