they absorb odors easily. To prevent peeled or cut-up pears from
browning, sprinkle with lemon juice.

Safety On & Off The School Bus
More than 23 million kids ride a school bus every day.
And it’s up to those kids to take some safety precau-
tions when it comes to waiting for and
riding on the bus.
Going to the bus stop...
• Whenever possible, walk with others from
your school.
• Try not to walk in the street. If you have to walk
in the street, walk as close to the curb as possible.
• Be alert and avoid any signs of danger.
• Obey traffic lights and signals.
• When you are crossing the street, cross only at
the corner and use crosswalks where possible.
Look both ways before crossing.
While you wait for the bus...
• Dress right for the weather.
• Arrive at the bus stop on time.
• Stay away from the street while you are waiting
for the bus.
Boarding the school bus...
• Do not approach the bus until it stops
completely, then wait for the driver’s signal.
• Drawstrings, ties, straps and backpacks can get
caught in bus doors, railings or aisles, so be extra
careful when getting on or off the bus.
• Enter the bus in single file. Do not push.
• Use the handrail.
• Take a seat quickly and sit facing forward.
Riding the bus...
• Always obey school bus rules.
• Remain seated throughout the ride.
• Keep your arms, hands and head inside the bus.
• Help keep the bus neat and clean.

probably cannot see you. Take five giant steps
away from the bus, and you should be able to see
the driver, and the driver should be able to see you.
• Never crawl under a bus. Do not bend down near
or under the bus.
• If you need to cross the street, wait for the driver to
signal, then cross the street in front of the bus.
• Look both ways before crossing the street.
• Never run back to the bus, even if you have
forgotten something.
Safety To & From School
It’s best if children are accompanied by adults or
a group of friends when heading to or from
school or the school bus. But that’s not always
possible, so children need to take these precau-
tions:
• Never talk to strangers.
• Never accept anything from a stranger.
• Do not agree to anything suggested by
a stranger.
• Walk away if a person makes you feel
uncomfortable.
• Do not accept a ride from or go with a
stranger.
• Know your telephone number and the
number of a close friend or relative.
• Avoid areas where drugs are sold.
• Do not touch or pick up drugs, alcohol or
weapons for any reason.
If you are approached by a stranger or a
stranger touches you...
Shout “NO!” and get away quickly. Find an
adult you trust, such as your parent or a teacher.
If you cannot find an adult, call 9-1-1. Do not
hang up until the person on the
phone says you can, and follow all his/her
instructions.
It’s important that you remember what the per-
son looks like, what he/she was wearing and
what kind of car he/she was driving. Even if
you are afraid about what happened, it is not
your fault, and it is very important that you tell
your parent(s).
Try to arrange to walk to and from school or the
bus with a friend or group of friends. Stay alert
to what’s going on and who might be around
you.

On a recent trip to California to
visit my cousin Ingrid and her
family, I discovered what world-

Jackson Pollock and 13-year-old
Audrey have in common. When the
urge to paint and create calls, they
grab their medium, spatter and
throw it all over their canvas and
then stand back in joyful amazement. Color everywhere, shooting out in
all directions! Pollack called his technique “action painting,” while
Audrey described hers as “just plain fun.”
While Audrey is too modest to call herself a Pollock protegee, she will
admit that she loves to experiment with “paints and crafty stuff,”
especially on the spur of the moment. That’s exactly what she did when
she and her middle-school friend decided that the canvas butterfly-style
chair she decorated when she was an 8-year-old was definitely from
another era. A faded “Girl’s Rule” painted slogan and mini drawings no
longer fit the updated look of her teen-style bedroom. Instead of tossing
the comfy chair for something new, she repurposed it on a whim.
The girls removed the canvas from the frame, grabbed a drawer full of
acrylic craft paints in squeeze bottles in Audrey’s favorite colors, and
headed outdoors in the backyard. They stretched it out flat on an old
ping-pong table and the two of them started squeezing and squirting
paint with abandon. The paint took a few hours to dry since some of it
came out in “artistic” globs, but the look was sensational and the chair
was decidedly hip and trendy.

you’re getting married. As
luck would have it, both
you and your fiancé are
outdoor enthusiasts and
would like to have an
outdoor wedding and
reception. But your
friends and family think
you’re nuts. After much
discussion and consulting
of weather patterns,
you’ve decided to go for it.
Now what?
Deciding on a location
is an excellent place to
start. Do you want your
wedding to be in a park, a
beach, an historic estate,
a scenic landmark or in
your own backyard? Just
in case Mother Nature
doesn’t cooperate, it would
probably be a good idea to
have an indoor backup
close by, or at the very
least, a tent. When
scouting wedding loca-
tions, check around the
area for construction
projects, insect problems
and major intersections. If
you choose a public area,
find out if you will need a
permit and how much it
will cost. Ask if there is a
limit on the number of
guests you can invite, if
alcohol is allowed and who
is responsible for trash
removal. Parking is
another thing to take into
consideration. If parking
is tight, you may have to
hire a valet or have
everyone park in a nearby
lot and shuttle them over.
Check out the wedding
site at the same time of
day that you are going to
have your wedding. Doing
so may help keep the sun
out of your guests’ eyes.
Having an outdoor
wedding means that

Short-Term Fix for Leaky Roof
Q: This summer, I found a couple of small leaks in the attic, apparently
from some rough spots on the roof. I marked the attic ceiling where the
leaks are, but what’s the best way to repair them? -- Greta in Topeka,
Kansas
A: You can patch those leaky spots for now, but you’ll want to have your
roof evaluated by a professional as soon as possible. In the meantime,
here’s how you can minimize the damage.
Indoors, place containers underneath the leaks to catch rainwater, and
dry up damp areas as they occur. Next, since you’ve already marked the
leak sources, make sure their locations can be found from outside on the
roof.
You can do this in two ways: at each leaky spot, drive a large nail
through the underside of the roof, upward -- this will punch through or
push up the shingle above, marking the spot; or, measure the distance
between each leak and the nearest feature that can be seen outside -- like
the chimney, a vent opening or the roof peak.
From there, a spot repair should be made on the roof. Always work with
a partner and a safety rope. On a dry day, head up there with some
roofing cement, a couple of spare shingles, a utility knife, roofing nails,
a hammer and a flat pry bar.
At the leak spot, remove the big marking nail -- it’s no longer needed.
Evaluate the area. If the shingle above is loose or torn, seal back in place
with a generous application of roofing cement. If it’s missing, install a
new shingle by sliding it into place under the shingle above the missing
part (carefully loosen the upper shingle if necessary, using the pry bar),
tacking down with roofing cement and securing with a couple of roofing
nails (nail them along the top of the replacement shingle, under the
them).
Sometimes, leaks occur at roof joints -- where the roof meets a corner, or
a chimney. Metal flashing is in place to sluice water away from these
joints, but gaps often occur after a few years thanks to warping and
debris strikes. Patch the flashing with roofing cement for now, and have
it evaluated for replacement in the near future.
HOME TIP: If a roof leak is running down the beams toward the wall,
break the flow by nailing a small piece of wood to the beam. The water
will drip off the wood piece (place a bucket underneath).
