James Lassa Matthew Tougas 9 December, 2013 Eng-219-005 Clean Water for All The issue at hand: Every

day we hear how the water of the world is polluted. Now lets be honest, no one takes this to heart or thinks they should do something about this. The brutal reality is that we should in fact do something about the polluted water of the world. Water is a simple molecule made of two parts hydrogen and one part oxygen which is essential for life as we know it. Now pollution is defined as something that doesnt make something pure anymore. When we break it down we realize that something essential to life is polluted and its a little more frightening. Something needs to be done about the issue of the unclean water of the world. Human error: Modern technology has redefined life. Things are easier to accomplish now than ever. Unfortunately, some of these technologies like extracting resources, large cars, and our ways of living are having negative effects on the water of the world. Because of the technologies we enjoy every day we can complete tasks easier but the price it comes is not worth it. Water is one of the most polluted natural resources necessary to life. It would be wildly unfair to tell everyone to stop using the technologies they use to reduce water pollution, but there may be other ways to clean our water. We have no one else to blame but ourselves for letting our water get as polluted as it is, but through education, small efforts made by everyone, and support for The Crystal Clear

Clinic we can clean up the water of the world. There are methods, and the knowledge is out there of how to clean the water of the world, but ask anyone, and they dont know about it. Correction: The purpose of this report is to bring to light the fact that earths water supply is in danger and to illuminate possible solutions for cleaning the water of the world. The Crystal Clear Clinic strives for better water quality so that anyone can drink, bathe, or swim in it. About 70 percent of earth is covered in water. That is a lot of water to clean but it can be done with the help of the human race. By simply getting the word out that earths water is polluted we have already begun to tackle this issue. While getting the word out helps, It does not solve the whole issue. We will need to educate as many people as possible on how to conserve, clean and protect the water of the world. Education is a very powerful tool, and when we put this power to work through events, lectures, and text, we will begin to see a change for the better. With everyone realizing that the worlds water supply is in danger, and people doing their small part to protect it, the efforts made will be large scale. Not only that but there are other ways to clean, conserve and protect the water of the world though recent technological breakthrough. The Crystal Clear Clinic wants to see these specific ideals actually take place. We have a good cause that will benefit every living organism on the face of the earth. While our intentions are well, we cant do it all by ourselves. Support, donations, and volunteers are necessary to put plans into action to clean the water of the world.

Introduction: To start things off, I would like to begin on a bright note. The event that you funded, Dr. Savior, was a huge success. Without your good heart, and generous donation The Crystal Clear Clinic would not have seen as much success at the event as we did, so thank you. This event was a perfect way to kick off our organization and we were able to get our name out there. That being said, I can already tell that this organization will do big things in the direction of our cause, and thats clean water. Our free surf lesson event definitely spread the word to many, and addressed ways that people can do their parts to clean the water of the world. While we were able to educate some individuals we havent even hit the tip of the iceberg. In order to truly clean the water of the world we need people worldwide to work at this goal. When looking at the information about the water of the world, and the pollution the more convincing it is that something must be done about this. With the scary facts about our earths polluted water, comes solutions and ways to fix our polluted water. Backing those solutions are rationales that goes into depth as to how this issue can be fixed. Along with this, providing credible sources and presenting how The Crystal Clear Clinic researched will prove that the Crystal Clear Clinic has good intentions and this should gain us support. Lastly I would like to discuss in depth the outcomes of our first event, and how other events can have an influence. To wrap it all up is a recommendation to bring all our thoughts, research, and hopes to life. Description: Water covers 70% of the worlds surface and is the most precious natural resource. First, to address how to prevent water pollution it begins at homes. When water is not being used, it should be turned off, leaks should be fixed as soon as possible, and people must watch of what they dump down drains. Items like paints, oils, or other contaminants should be disposed of

properly, and not poured in drains. People should not overuse pesticides, and fertilizers; overuse tends to runoff and further pollutes water supplies. While we can start at homes to clean up our water supplies, thats not the only factor that plays into water pollution. Sewage and wastewater has a major effect on water pollution. There are billions of people on the planet and those who cannot properly treat sewage may find their water very contaminated. Not only that, but those in countries where sewage is treated, the feces, and defecates are usually dumped in the sea, further polluting our oceans. Along with the dumping, major industries produce pollutants that are carcinogenic, radioactive, and very dangerous. Instead of properly treating these pollutants, many industries take the less expensive route and dump these pollutants into seas, and lakes. While this rids these major industries of their pollutants, it has major effects on marine life, aquifers that people drink from, and recreation swimming areas. Dr. Savior, as you can already imagine our earths water is wildly polluted, and the scary truth is that the water will continue to become more polluted if these ways do not change. Rationale: While we see the facts as to how our Earths water is becoming polluted justification of the importance of this issue is necessary to convince anyone to join the efforts to help clean the water of the world. Backing up the issues stated in the description is justified through clear concise research. Luckily, the research that makes the description legitimate is very easy to understand. As mentioned in the description there is a lot of dumping going on in our oceans, lakes, and other water sources. Some of this is radioactive material from industries; some people are dumping trash, improperly disposing of oils and paints, improperly treating sewage, and other heinous dumping. As you can imagine this is all vile material is definitely not good for water supplies. As far as oil and paints go they do not mix with water. Water is a polar chemical

compound consisting of two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom. Because oxygen is electronegative it tends to take the electrons from the hydrogen atoms giving oxygen a slight negative charge, and the hydrogen atoms a slight positive charge. This makes water polar meaning that only chemical compounds that are hydrophilic will mix with water. Oils and paints are hydrophobic, meaning they do not mix with water. This is because they are non-polar, meaning that they evenly share the electrons between bonds. Because the amount of water that ranges in the human body is anywhere from 50-75 percent, it would be bad to consume water with oil in it. Now humans do consume oil, but the safe oil that humans consume is an unsaturated fat which consists of a carbon chain, with each carbon bonding to hydrogen, and a double bond between carbons. The oil and paints that we are primarily concerned with have a much more complex chemical structure and are very dangerous for humans to consume. As far as dumping of radioactive material goes, as you can imagine that is very bad. To avoid going too deep into chemical structures I will explain the basics. Radioactive substances are dependent on the neutrons in an atom. Depending on the number of neutrons, and what radioactive element we are dealing with it will bond to certain elements. For example, Strontium is radioactive and is attracted to calcium. If a company were to dump strontium into a water source it would mix with the water because it is water-soluble. Say a human drinks the polluted water that contains the strontium. Because strontium is attracted to calcium the radioactive element would go straight to the bone marrow causing that unfortunate person very serious medical conditions. Now if multiple people drink from that same water source, then we will see and outbreak of the same issue. This issue can be avoided with proper treatment. Some may argue that it is very hard for that much water to become polluted with radioactive material, to combat that argument please see the photo below.

Above: This photo shows plutonium spilling in the Pacific Ocean after an earthquake. While natural disasters do occur, there is proper treatment and precautions to take to avoid this.

On the topic of improper sewage treatment, there are many risks, and through deductive reasoning we can evaluate the dangers of polluted water from sewage. Feces have bacteria, viruses, and fungus in it. As one can imagine these are three things that no one to put in their body. While it may seem that water is only threated by three classifications of sewage (Bacteria, fungus, and virus) it goes much deeper than that. There are certain types of bacteria, fungi, and viruses that can be life threatening or just cause a stomachache. Either way, it all can be avoided. The most common issue likely to be contracted from untreated sewage water is a bacterial infection. Water is the perfect place for bacteria to thrive in for bacteria need a medium to grow. This may not seem like a huge issue to those in first world countries, but contracting a very serious illness due to improperly treated water is a very real issue for many in third world

countries. In first world countries we have the capabilities, the resources, and that money to treat sewage. But, in third world countries it is not uncommon for an individual to defecate in a puddle or near a water source. Furthermore, it is not uncommon for people and animals to share the same water source in a third world country. Not knowing who or what defecated in a water source, and thinking it is okay to drink from that water can cause serious issues. Cross contamination is a very real issue in these third world countries where they do not have proper ways to treat water. The Crystal Clean Clinic wants to put an end to that, and through our research, evaluations, and deductive reasoning, we are closer to clean water. Methodology: As far as research goes, that was the most important part to making steps closer to clean water. Chemistry explains how things work together and how things react. My minor is chemistry, so having an understanding of water at a subatomic level is very important. All research was like a puzzle. I understand how water is formed, how radioactive elements look, how oils and paints look at a molecular level, and how bacteria work. Being presented with all the pieces, I just had to put the puzzle together. Through basic understanding of different types of pollutants in water such as oils, and radioactive waste, I was able to get an understanding of what was being done to the worlds water. When I took what I know in chemistry, and applied to the issues with earths water I was able to gain a full understanding as to how, what, and most importantly why earths water is so polluted and why this issue is very serious. Through deductive reasoning and inference I was able to construct very real scenarios as to how pollutants are getting into earths water, and how an individual may ingest polluted water. Furthermore, because of my chemistry background, I was able to understand what effects certain pollutants may have on the human body. The results I found, mentioned in the rationale such as ingestion

of radioactive material or bacteria, amplify the need for attention to the issue of polluted water. The reason as to why I treated my research like a puzzle was because I know that there have been studies on this topic before. While it could have been easy to simply research the internet, I may have found incorrect information. I wanted to put the pieces together myself so that I would have a better understanding of things, I know that my results are correct, and I can back my results up. Event Description: As you know Dr. Savior, the event you funded was a huge success. Huntington Beach Ca. was the perfect location for our event. We definitely drew a lot of people in, were able to get across some good values to some people, and began gaining support for our organization. Through events like this we definitely can draw in more support, and eventually when The Crystal Clear Clinic develops a reputation we can hold seminars, and lectures for clean water. Because we have a good cause people are willing to listen. Because people are willing to listen they will be willing to help. Drawing in volunteers, donations, and building our reputation will serve us well, but ultimately serve the planets water well. From the very promising results we saw at our first event its evident that our organization will move in a very good direction. The amount of support, donations, and volunteers we gathered forecasts success for future endeavors. Recommendation: To tackle the issue at hand I would first like to suggest more events like the one we held. By hosting more events we can increase the amount of donations, volunteers, and support we get. This will help The Crystal Clear Clinic change the world. Not only can we host events, but I would like to gain as much support as we can through lectures. By gaining support and educating individuals we can help to fight to change laws for more strict dumping laws against industries

and corporations. With the power of the people behind us we will already have taken steps towards major changes for earths water. With less radioactive material in water due to stricter laws earths water will be much cleaner to drink, bathe, or swim in. Not only radioactive material in earths water, but there should also be more strict laws for people dumping oils and paints improperly. I propose we set up a service where people can call to have their oils, chemicals, paints etc. picked up, and taken to a refinery to be properly processed. This will need volunteers, but after our last event, and seeing the willingness of people to help, finding volunteers will be easy. By setting up this service, we will have eliminated dumping, and once again made a huge step towards cleaner water. As far as sewage treatment goes, that will cost money. The whole point of The Crystal Clear Clinic is to clean the water of the world. As far as those in lesser areas who dont have the same resources and first world countries goes, I propose we begin by educating people in lesser locations on how to properly treat water. Not only that, but we should also install small refineries in these lesser areas so that water can be properly treated. While it may take a lot of donations to complete this task I will be worth it. You cant put a limit on clean water, and at times this may be a matter of life and death. It would be better to pay a onetime fee of installing a sewage treatment plant in a lesser area, and treat water, than having earths water become more and more polluted. As far as those who will work in the treatment plants, we can hire volunteers. There are many people who would love to travel to another country to help out. As long as the volunteers are willing to learn the skills to properly treat water, we will have a very successful program. While fighting for more strict laws on dumping, setting up programs for treatment, and installing treatment plants in lesser areas will help to alleviate much polluted waters, it all comes

down to education. If we can present the facts to people on the pollution in the earths water, why its being polluted, and what we can do about it, we will open eyes. At a major level The Crystal Clear Clinic will definitely clean a lot of polluted waters. But if this isnt stopped this at the source then we will be fighting a never ending battle. By holding events and educating as many as we can on how every individual can do their part we will see a major change for the better. Education is the most powerful tool we have, and we just need to arm those willing to listen. Through events, seminars, broadcasts, and lectures we can reach people, and stop water pollution before it ever happens.

Mr. Tougas, I really enjoyed your class. I didnt mind attending your class at all. I definitely liked that you gave us a lot of leash with our assignments. I also really liked that we did not have to read a textbook. In my opinion I dont think you become a better writer by taking tests and reading a textbook. The reason I did things the way I did in this proposal was for a certain reason. I liked the cover letter and the introduction because that opened the door to my essay. The description gave me a good way to introduce all the problems. The rationale gave me a good option to explain the why aspect to what my committee address. In the end Dr. Savior can see exactly what my aims are, and why its important. Backing up my reasons was very important, and in the rationale I was able to use proven chemistry to support the issues that my committee addresses. When my issues are backed up and I prove my reasoning I can persuade people in my direction, or in this case, gain support for my committee. This assignment will help me to do good research to support what I want, and get people to listen to me based on logical reasoning. As a whole from the course I learned to incorporate research in my writing to persuade others in my direction. Not only that but I also gained skills to request certain things like funds without sounding rude because I used research. I interpret the purpose of English 219 to be to learn to communicate with others in a professional manner. To learn to present research in writing so that others will understand and can help you achieve what you are aiming for. This is a very important skill. Employers will always ask for certain things, and you need to have the skills to be able to ask others for what an employer needs/ wants. Not only that, but conducting oneself in a manner of professionalism, wit, and confidence shows a lot of character and makes one a leader rather than a follower. Thank you for all you helped me with this semester, Matthew.
