1. (a) Explain a telemetry system where measured variable is shown as a function

2. (a) Give an account of PCM / PM or PCM / FM standards.


(b) Briefly explain how ITU Emissions are designated according to their classifi-
cation and bandwidths. [8+8]

3. Draw the sketch of the portable telemetry transmitter, receiver and explain the
portable telemetry system. [16]

4. How does noise become important in a receiving system and what precautions need
to be taken to avoid/eliminate noise? How is noise modeled ? What is a noise figure
? How is quality of receiver ascertain? what is SINAD? [16]

5. Compare PCM, PWM, PPM, Delta modulation with each other and list two ad-
vantages & disadvantages of the system. [16]

6. What is a single mode fiber? Show the dimensions and refractive index profiles of
different types of optical fiber. Explain about the pulse dispersion in step index
fibers with graphs. [16]

7. Explain about the Pulse Count Method for digital sum and mean value used in
digital Tele control method with out coding. [16]

8. List and briefly explain the environmental and interface conditions of Tele control

1. (a) What is meant by signal conditioning and explain its role in the Telemetry

(b) Differentiate between wired Telemetry and Radio telemetry system. [8+8]

2. Define the terms :

and explain their role in Telemetry system. List their advantages. [16]

3. Draw the sketch of the portable telemetry transmitter, receiver and explain the
portable telemetry system. [16]

4. (a) Explain phase modulation and derive the equation.


(b) A 25 MHz carrier is modulated by a 400 Hz audio sine wave. If the carrier
voltage is 4V and maximum deviation is 10 KHz. Write the equation of this
modulated wave for FM, PM. If the modulating frequency is changed to 2
KHz write a new equation for FM, PM. [8+8]

5. Briefly explain about the sources of error in PWM Telemetry system. [16]

6. (a) Write in detail about IR detectors.


(b) What is an Avalanche Photodiode. Explain the construction details of the
APD with a figure. [8+8]

7. What is meant by digital Tele control method with coding method? Explain about
Electro mechanical systems with low and high Tele graph speeds in digital pulse

1. (a) Explain how electrical Telemetry is classified and explain one system
(b) Explain Hydraulic Telemetry system. [8+8]

2. (a) How is propagation of light supported in a fibre optic cable? What is the
critical Angle of incidence and on what factors does it depend?
(b) In a fibre optic cable the refractive indices of the core, cladding and air are 1.49,
1.36 & 1.00 respectively. Calculate the critical angle and numerical aperture.

3. Explain the concept of different electrical systems used in short distance telemeter-
ing. [16]

4. Why is the frequency multiplication needed in FM transmitter and how is it accom-


plished? What is the equipment usually used for generating a carrier frequency?
Draw the circuit diagram of such a generator and explain its operation. [16]

5. What is meant by pulse code modulation? Explain basic elements of PCM system.
Write about its advantages and applications. [16]

6. (a) Explain the Attenuation in optical fibres with figures.

3. Why frequency telemetry system considered more advantageous than voltage (or)
Current Telemetry system even in short distance case? How the analogue signal
converted into frequency for transmission? Mention the frequency ranges for the
