Falls girl dances in The Nutcracker for 10th year

BY NIKKI ACKERMAN STAFF WRITER As she dances as part of the Milwaukee Ballets The Nutcracker for the 10th consecutive year, 16-year-old Ashley Doherty reflects on a childhood spent on her toes. Enrolled by her parents in a myriad of activities starting at a young age, the Menomonee Falls High School junior quickly found her niche. (I was also in) soccer, gymnastics, swimming, baseball and horseback riding...and I enjoyed them all, Ashley said. However, as I got older, my love for dance grew, as did the commitment of time it would take to train. That is when it became apparent that my focus would be ballet. And I have never regretted it, she said. Ashleys 2013 Nutcracker experience is a bittersweet one as this will likely be her last year as part of the beloved tradition so that she can focus on college preparation. The teen has played just about every student role in the holiday ballet that includes more than 100 children and this year she will take on two rolesthat of a friend in the opening party scene and another as a mother ginger child. As the longestrunning student cast member, Ashley takes with her 10 seasons of magical memories. The excitement and emotion I feel with each and every show is unmatched and I feel truly blessed and fortunate to have had this experience, she said. Making new friends, getting to know many professional dancers on a more personal level, helping to bring the story of 'The Nutcracker' to life for others to enjoy are all memories that will be with me forever.

More than a show: Camaraderie part of annual Band Revue

The following story was provided by the School District of Menomonee Falls. Band at Menomonee Falls High School just isnt the same after Band Revue, the musical variety show the high school has been putting on 64 years and counting. When I was a sophomore I didnt know anyone in my section, said senior Tom Grizzle. After the show, that French horn section became more of a welcoming place. People talked. Friendships were made. It brings us together, said Jessica Szuminski. Weekend performances of the Band Revue will be held at the high school, N8101 Merrimac Drive, at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 14 and 1 p.m. Dec. 15. Tickets are $5 Cal Weber said he remembers not knowing anyone until he was invited to the cast party. These people really like me, he said. Band Director Michael Zens sits back and watches it all happen. The camaraderie and esprit de corps the program builds during this show is outstanding the friendships the students make during Band Revue are a lot of what makes the band program a family, he said. Like getting to know each other, this years family had to get to know its show. The theme is James Bond (they even renamed the show to Bond Revue), a character with which many only partly familiar. Homework for this extracurricular activity was to watch movies. Six leading seniors learned quickly, agreeing that typical favorite Sean Connery was the best of the Bonds. Students also learn about themselves and each other. Band students dont necessarily sing or dance. But they do now. I love being surprised by everyones new talents you didnt know they had, said Szuminski. It creates a more rounded educational experience musically, said Max Bahneman. Besides the unique nature of the production itself, this event is almost completely student run. At the last dress rehearsal before the curtain went up for real, students sat on the edge of the stage and gave notes to the actors/musicians. They select the music and perform live nearly all of it; they write the script and choreograph the dances. Adult directors Zens, John Woger, Mark Brooks and Hannah Klaus facilitate, but students lead the way with their own directors: Bahneman, Grizzle, Szuminski, Weber, Katie Eisenhauer, and Morgan Nienow. Band Revue is an opportunity for students to take ownership of their learning in an authentic way they are involved in all facets of the show, from initial discussions of the theme, to rehearsals, to the final performance, said Zens. Its fun to have a say in such a masterpiece, said Nienow. Its cool to see something you made, said Grizzle. It has become a tradition to at least live up to the previous years production, and the stan-

Falls Parkway, Mill Pond dredging among village construction projects this year
BY THOMAS J. MC KILLEN MANAGING EDITOR The construction of the Falls Parkway was one of the more high visibility construction projects undertaken by the village this year. That project which involved constructing the southern portion of a road that will link Pilgrim Road to what is now Richfield Parkway was one of several highlighted by village Director of Engineering Tom Hoffman during a Dec. 2 report to the Village Board. Work on that portion of Falls Parkway cost $1,503,880 and was constructed by BCF Construction Corp. The first phase occurred from June to August and involved installing 1,298 linear feet of sanitary sewer, 2,456 linear feet of water main, 2,873 linear feet of storm sewer, 7,196 linear feet of curb and gutter and 3,065 tons of asphalt pavement. The same project also included $199,956 of landscaping done by Blaze Landscaping, and included the installation of 220 trees, 158 shrubs, 989 perennials, three pond fountains and 1,155 linear feet of sidewalk. Further north and on the other side of Hwy. 41/45, the village replaced a water main on Megal Drive from Pilgrim Road to Cherokee Drive. The work was done by Van Straten Corporation at a cost of $478,972. The project involve installed 3,335 linear feet of 12-inch water main. In addition, the village bored 324 linear feet of a 12 inch water main under Hwy. 41/45. Hoffman said the project was in response to several water main breaks in the area. The reconstruction of the road will be bid in spring 2014. Hoffman noted that the Cherokee/Pilgrim road project follows the pattern of a road reconstruction near St. James Church. According to Hoffman, the water main was installed last year while the road reconstruction in the area was done this year. Other projects that have occurred this year were: Ongoing repair of the Lepper Dam just north of Main Street which involves removing existing gates and installing new stainless steel gates, pressure washing the same, removing and patching deteriorated concrete, and waterproofing the structure. NuJen Johnson LLC did the work at a cost of $192,195 Later during the meeting the board approved a contract with Krause Excavating to dredge 5,000 cubic yards of material behind the dam at a total cost of $89,116.10; The reconstruction of 124th Street from Main Street to County Line Road by LaLonde Contractors at a cost $1,200,000. The cost of the project was split between the village and city of Milwaukee; The reconstruction of Duke Street and Mary Hill Drive by DF Tomasini Inc at a cost of $268,580. The project involved installing 1,087 linear fete of sewer with manholes and catch basins, reconstructing five sanitary manholes and installing 1960 linear square feet of curb and gutter. Hoffman added that the area has experience several water main breaks, in part because the water main dated back to the 1950s. The water main replacement on Mary Hill Drive near St. James at a cost of $272,000, which was done by Van Straten Construction. The project included installing 2,040 linear feet of an eight inch water main 640 linear feet of water laterals; The paving of 4.7 miles or road at a cost of $1,463,000 by Stark Asphalt. as part of the road maintenance program; The curb and gutter replacement program, which included removing and replacing 6,300 linear feet of curb, 2,000 square feet of driveway approaches and 3,400 square feet of concrete replacement. The work cost $270,000 and was done by Stark Asphalt. Adding a municipal parking lot at a cost of $289,198, which was done by Willkomm Excavating. Additional storm sewer, stormwater detention and landscaping work was involved as part of the project.

...Band Revue
From page 5
dard keeps rising. The bar was set so high last year, said Eisenhauer. Work began officially in mid-October, but students didnt hit the stage until a week ago. As show time nears, nerves intensify, though this group says its ready. In theory it shouldnt come together but it does every year, said Bahneman. Students are not, however, ready for Band Revue to be over. Come late Sunday afternoon when that curtain falls for the final time, tears will as well. Im not going to lie. Its a major downer that its over, said Eisenhauer. But they wouldnt trade it for anything. Its just so much fun you cant explain it until youre in it, Eisenhauer said.

She was a member of the 2012 US Women's Junior National Team and the 2013 USA Volleyball Girls' Youth National Team. She recently signed a National Letter of Intent to play volleyball at Penn State.

...National honor
From page 1
Shes the best in the nation, and we already knew that, Cooke said of the recent award. Templeton Principal Patty Polczynski noted that Watton was before the board a year ago after she received the Distinguished Teacher Award from the National Council of Geographic Education. Watton has also made presentations regarding a stock market simulationactivity. She is an amazing teacher. She is enthusiastic, creative, supportive and innovative in the classroom. She really works to get her kids involved in learning, Polczynski said. Rhonda is a teacher that understands that sit and get isnt the way to really engage kids in the process of learning. Polczynski added that Wattons lessons are very inclusive, incorporating activities that are meaningful to content, stretching her kids thinking, critical thinking and problem solving and making connections between US history and what shes teaching, (connecting) the eighth grade curriculum with what kids are experiencing in their lives today. Watton received the award in late November at a convention in St. Louis. In addition to the award, she also made a presentation at the convention. Wattons presentation dealt with various instructional strategies related to the westward expansion. Polczynski noted the session was hands on and challenged students critical thinking and involved interpreting primary documents. Watton thanked her parents, who were attendance at the meeting, for their support. By Thomas J. McKillen, Managing Editor

CONFECTIONS FOR ANY OCCASION

Be a better shopper
By Tresa Erickson You're not much of a shopper, which may explain why you put off the purchase of Christmas gifts until the last minute. Yep, you're one of those last-minute shoppers delving through the leftovers on store shelves on Christmas Eve. This year, you're changing your ways. Here are some tips to ensure you're successful. Research beforehand While some people may tell you exactly what they want, others won't have any idea and leave the choosing to you. Find out ahead of time what recipients like, want and need, and do some online shopping to see what's out that there might suit them. Start early Some people start their shopping the day after Christmas. You may not be able to go that far, but you can certainly be on the lookout for good deals throughout the year. You never know when one might pop up, and the earlier you start your shopping, the better the savings and selection will be. You might also get finished sooner! Make a list Don't go shopping without any inkling of what you need to buy. This will lead to impulse purchases and an empty wallet in no time. Determine beforehand whom you need to buy for, what you need to buy them and how much you intend to spend on them. Be selective Anyone can pick out a gift for someone. To make your gifts special, you need to put thought into what you buy and take the time to personalize each and every gift, either with a handwritten note or some other token. Let the recipient know why you selected what you did, and when possible, make it theirs with monograms, photos and such. Present with care After all the time you put in shopping, you don't want to stuff your gifts into bags and drop them at recipients' feet. They won't know how much effort you put into the selection process and their reaction may show it. Take the time to wrap your gifts beautifully and watch them get opened. The smiles you receive will make all of the effort worthwhile!

Gifts from the heart

By Tresa Erickson The holidays have arrived. Let the shopping begin! And so it begins' the days and days of shopping on end for the perfect gift for each and every person on your list. You're all gungho at first with the best of intentions, but as the days whittle down and you realize you haven't gotten very far on your list, the goal of purchasing the perfect gift flies out the door and almost anything will do. What a pity! We've all been there, done that, but this year, it doesn't have to be that way. You can change your stripes, start shopping early and get the perfect gift for everyone on your list. Here are some pointers. Less is more When it comes gift giving, more is not always best. You don't have to break the bank and buy the recipient everything they ask for. One or two gifts of THEIR choosing will suffice. That's right-THEIR choosing. It is a gift for them, not you, so buy what they ask for, and if they didn't make any requests, buy what suits their needs and wants, not yours. Budget matters There is no need to go deep into debt with your holiday shopping. If the recipient has a request out of your price range, find someone to split the cost with or find another gift to buy. The recipient will understand, and if they don't, oh well. It's your bottom line. You

...Gifts from the heart
From page 16
don't want to be paying for something for someone else long into the new year. Selectivity is key Don't buy the first thing you come across. Take the time to shop around and check out the merchandise. Make sure the gift you choose meets the recipient's qualifications and will last for a long time. Should additional services or products be offered, consider them carefully. The extended warranty may not be as beneficial as the accessories package. Presentation counts The right gift will mean little with sloppy packaging. Select a nice gift wrap or bag, wrap the gift with care and attach a bow or ribbon and a gift tag. Got a gift card instead? Purchase a card, envelope or gift bag or box to put it in. Prove to the recipient that you took the time to make the presentation of the gift attractive-whatever it may be. Delivery is everything Find a good time to deliver the gift when the recipient will be able to appreciate it. This could be at lunch, a party or an after-hours gathering. If you can't find a convenient time, do not despair. Just drop the gift off and tell the recipient to enjoy! Finding the perfect gift takes work. Put forth the effort, and it will not go unnoticed. When all is said and done, the gifts that have been hand selected and wrapped with care will be the ones remembered! Those are the gifts from the heart after all.

...Dance an integral part of teens life

From page 1
Entering the world of ballet at the age of two and joining the Milwaukee Ballet through a local branch at age four, Ashley is now at the highest level to which one can rise before becoming a professional. Dance has been such an integral part of Ashleys life and such a great passion for her, said Ashleys mother, Linda Doherty. Right now she wants to focus on college, but I cant imagine her ever not dancing. Indeed, Ashley said that ballet has brought her many rewards. Ballet has allowed me the opportunity to learn how to express emotion in a beautiful, artistic, non-verbal way and it has been a great source of stress relief from the challenges I sometimes face in my life, she said. It has helped keep me fit and has increased my stamina, coordination, strength and flexibility. Ashley went on to note that the life lessons she has collected beyond the slippers and leotard have been invaluable. Ballet has helped me develop confidence, poise, musicality, good listening skills, as well as taught me how to be a good time manager, she said. The performance art is not for the faint of heart, however, as a major time commitmentand a lot of hard workis required. At Ashleys level, practices run three hours per day six days each week and that time increases when a production lies ahead. A lot of people ask Ashley, Are you crazy? because it takes up so much time, said Linda. You have to really love it. Ashley has gone above and beyond to also participate in weeks-long summer intensive dance programs, her most recent one being in New York City as part of the Joffrey Ballet. Performing in various major cities, especially the largest one in the country, is the dream of anyone passionate about dance, she said. Although she has made a monumental investment in dancing over the yearsIt is such a commitment that many of the girls who get to her level are home-schooled, Linda notedAshley has managed to also excel academically as a National Honor Society, National Spanish Honor Society and Art Honor Society student. Education is equally important to her her as dance; she is very driven that way, Linda said. She is also very, very artistic and I think that flows from the dancing. Still a typical teenager in many ways, Ashley also makes time for fun. She hangs out with her many friends and joins in typical high school activities like the Powder Puff football game this fall. (She played under the name of Twinkle Toes, naturally.) Shes an all-around girl, Linda said. She loves everyone and has a very positive outlook on life. Finding a balance between dancing and all the other facets of her colorful life can be difficult, Ashley admitted, but she wouldnt change a thing. Managing, planning and balancing this schedule with other outside activities such as church, school work, and fun can at times be challenging and exhausting, but also allows me to have a great sense of pride in my accomplishments, she said. A mentor at heart, Ashley makes a point to guide younger dancers, namely her two ballerina sisters12-year-old Kailee and nine-year-old Shannonwho have also been in The Nutcracker. Last year all three girls performed in the show and this year Kailee will participate with her older sister. Linda said she and her husband, Bryan, will be in the audience for many of their daughters performances. When I watch all three of my girls dance, it is with awe, said Linda. With Ashley, I have watched her grow up and flourish, and that has been such a blessing. I am so proud of her. As Ashley looks toward a bright future, possibly seeking a career in medicine, she is certain that one element will remain the same. There is no better feeling for me than being on stage and performing. It is simply amazing, she said. For me, ballet is so much more than just something I do; it is a part of who I am and who I will always be. The Nutcracker will run at Uihlein Hall at the Marcus Center for Performing Arts in downtown Milwaukee Dec. 14-27. For ticket information, call (414) 902-2103 or visit www.milwaukeeballet.org/tickets/overview.

Today's column is about oral cancer. One of our wonderful patients was diagnosed with tonsillar cancer and is undergoing surgery, chemotherapy and radiation and we send our prayers for a speedy and full recovery! It is important to remind our readership about one of the many important reasons to see their dentist regularly. According to the Oral Cancer Foundation there will be 42,000 Americans that receive a diagnosis of oral or pharyngeal cancer this year and this will result in 8000 deaths. Oral cancer is a group of cancers that involve the head and neck and are found to be squamous cell carcinoma in 90% of cases. Squamous cell carcinomas have a much greater chance of spreading (or metastasizing) in comparison to basal cell carcinomas. The lesion is often asymptomatic which makes oral cancer screenings imperative. It most commonly appears as a reddish skin plaque or ulcer that grows slowly. A cancer cell is one that doesn't turn off and keeps multiplying as a result of a genetic mutation to genes. These cells cannot repair themselves. Where can oral cancer appear in my mouth? Oral or mouth cancer most commonly involves the tongue. It may also occur on the floor of the mouth, cheek lining, gums , the roof of one's mouth, or the lips. They may arise from many types of tissue in the mouth including salivary glands and lymph tissue. What should I look for? Keep your eye out for a skin lesion, lump, or ulcer that does not go away for around 2 weeks. This may be a small lesion on the tongue, lip, or other mouth areas. It is usually pale colored, but potentially could be dark or discolored. An early warning sign may be a white patch called a "leukoplakia" or a red patch known as an "erythroplakia" on the soft tissues of the mouth. These lesions are usually painless initially, however, it may develop a burning sensation or pain when the tumor is advanced. Other symptoms to look for are tongue problems, hard time swallowing, and mouth sores. Pain may be a late symptom but most often oral cancers are painless. How can a dentist tell if a lesion is cancerous or not? A dentist can identify a potentially cancerous lesion. However, a biopsy is the only way to know for sure. Benign and malignant lesions can look identical to the eye. A noninvasive brush biopsy can be performed to rule out the presence of cancerous cells. The only definitive method for determining if cancerous or precancerous cells are present is through biopsy. The cells will then undergo microscopic evaluation to determine if they are indeed cancerous. What will happen if a lesion in my mouth is determined to be cancerous? incision to be made to remove the lesion from the area in question. Radiation with or without chemotherapy can also be used in conjunction depending on the severity, stage, and size of the lesion. What puts you at a higher risk for developing cancer? People that are over 50 that drink heavily and smoke are at higher risk for oral cancer. Other risk factors are people that have been diagnosed with HPV or Human Papilloma Virus; which is a sexually transmitted disease which Michael Douglas recently associated with his throat cancer. Patients with poor diets or having had a higher exposure to radiation may also be at higher risk. We hope you will go to your dentist or come to us for your complimentary oral cancer screening. This is a disease that can be caught early and treated with a high level of success. We look forward to meeting you. At Hampton Dental we perform an oral cancer screening every time we meet a new patient and at each re-care visit! PET OF THE WEEK

Betty is my name; please don't confuse me with Betty Boop or Betty Rubble. I'm just Betty (who is looking for a new last name and a family to love me forever). I was transferred here from another Wisconsin shelter. I know how to sit, catch and even dance. Maybe I can be your Betty Hutton and you can be my Fred Astaire. This gal prefers to be the only dog in the house; however, I don't mind cats! Not that I want to get picky, but I really prefer to be around children over the age of 12. Friendly is my middle name! I am anxious to start the next chapter of my life ... please come in today and ask for me Betty.

Boys basketball: Germantown runs past Falls

The Germantown boys basketball team followed up a tight conference win Dec. 6 with a dominating performance against a nonconference foe the next evening. The Warhawks faced its first close contest of the season Dec. 7, as they defeated host Bay 80-72. Lamonte Bearden led Germantown with 29 points while Brian Bearden added 22 points and Jake Showalter added 15 points. "Bay's good and we know they play us tough," Germantown Coach Steve Showalter said the next evening. Germantown then got off to a fast start against Menomonee Falls the next evening on the way to an 83-47 win. A basket by Menomonee Falls' josh Karls made the score 26-12 in favor of Germantown at the 7:31 mark of the second quarter. But a layup by Evan Wesenberg on the other end started a 20-point run for the Warhawks, as Germantown held a 48-13 lead by halftime. "I thought we had a good plan, we just didn't implement any of it," Menomonee Falls Coach Ben Farley said afterward. Farley added that Germantown "completely rattled us." Farley added that his team played better in the third quarter and that they continued to play hard. He added that then players were asking themselves why they didn't execute the plan against Germantown. Farley, in his first season as Menomonee Falls coach, added that "we're going to find out what we're made of at Mondays practice." Germantown Coach Steve Showalter added that Menomonee Falls played well in the second half. Showalter said he remained focused on having his team play "the right way" throughout the game. "There's a lot of things we need to improve at, there's a lot of things we need to do better," Showalter said. "You have to keep working at it." Hamilton results Hamilton fell to Dubuque (Iowa) at the Just A Game Fieldhouse in Wisconsin Dells Dec. 6, 55-43. Brady Ellingson led Hamilton with 19 points. By Thomas J. McKillen, Managing Editor

Girls basketball: Warhawks start season with three wins

The Germantown girls basketball team started the season with three wins, with the first one coming against a conference foe. The Warhawks opened the season Dec. 6 with a 82-77 win over Whitefish Bay. After the Blue Dukes took a 18-17 lead with 2:26 in the first quarter on a layup by Emma Jankowski, Germantown responded by scoring the next seven points to take a 26-18 lead by the end of the quarter. Whitefish Bay stayed close in the second quarter and took the lead in the third quarter, as a layup by Jankowski gave the Blue Dukes a 50-46 lead at the 3:59 mark of the third quarter. But Erika Berry answered with a three-point basket for Germantown and Val Meissner converted a free throw to tie the score at the 3:03 mark, as Germantown scored the next eight points. Bay tied the score at 60-60 with two free throws at the 6:47 mark but Germantown took the lead again and held on, as three Bay players fouled out in the closing minutes of the game, as Germantown reversed course from its typically frenetic pace and held on to the ball to keep the lead. Germantown Coach Matt Stuve noted his team held on to the ball for 1 minute 45 seconds before Bay was forced to foul. "It's just a credit to tough-minded, experienced kids," Stuve said. Stuve also noted that Bay was the only team to beat Germantown twice last year, including a buzzer beating victory at Germantown. The next evening Germantown topped Menomonee Falls 73-54. Menomonee Falls stayed close with Germantown for a quarter, as the score was tied 13-13. The Warhawks opened up a 10 point lead, as a three-point basket by Meissner gave Germantown a 28-18 lead with 2:52 before halftime. Germantown then outscored Menomonee Falls 7-2 for the rest of the quarter. The Warhawks then outscored Menomonee Falls 18-16 in the third and fourth quarters. Meissner led Germantown with 20 points, which included converting four of six three point attempts. Germantown went into overtime to defeat Brookfield East Dec. 10, 60-59. Bridget Kelly led Germantown with 13 points. Menomonee Falls results Menomonee Falls followed the Germantown losses with two defeats early last week. Menomonee Falls lost at Homestead 45-31 on Dec. 9. Kylie Sprecher led Menomonee Falls with nine points. The next evening Menomonee Falls lost to Divine Savior Holy Angels 56-24. Hamilton results Hamilton won its first game of the season Dec. 6, defeating Muskego 44-23. Taylor Klug led Hamilton with 13 points. By Thomas J. McKillen, Managing Editor
