Slide3:TheRichmondFoodBankwasfoundedonMarch6th,1983inthe HowarddeBeckSchool.Itwasstaffedwithmembersofthreelocal Churches.20familiesreceivedfoodonthefirstday.

Slide4:Today,theRFBisaregisteredcharity.Thereare6clerksand180 regularvolunteers.Together,theyalldedicatedtoworkforthefoodbank. Itsmissionistoprovidefood,assistanceandsupportforourcommunity. Itworkstobeacaringorganizationandhelpothersinneed. TheRFBhopesthatoneday,nooneinRichmondwillbehungry.

Slide5:TheRFBhasservedRichmondsince1983.Itserves600 familieseveryweek.Over1500peopleuseiteveryweekand35percent arechildren.15%oftheusersarelongtermuserswhocannotbenormally employed.Therearemanyreasonspeopleusethefoodbank.Someof themaredisabilitiesandhousingcost.Foreverydollarwedonate,RFB givesawaysixdollarsworthoffood.TheRFBgave26,984grocerybags offoodin2012.Italsogivesfoodtoothercharitygroupsforuse.Each week,RFBneeds20,000poundsoffood!However,RFBisnotfundedby government.Everythingispaidforwithdonationsfromthepublicand retailers.

Slide6:Whyarefoodbanksnecessary?Foodbankswerecreatedinthe 1980sduringtheEconomicRecession.(Anrecessionisatimewhenthe economyisintheworstsituation.)Peoplewithextrafooddonatedittothe poor.Althoughthefoodbankisanewinvention,theproblemexistedway agothefoodbankwassupposedtobeashorttermprogram.However, since700,000peoplewerehelpedeachmonthevenbeforetheprogram, theproblemexistedbeforetheRecession.Peopleaskforhelpbecause oflowpayingjobs,becauseofhighcostsforfoodandhousing,and becauseoffamilybackground.ManynewimmigrantsandFirstNations peoplereceivehelpfromthefoodbank.Manychildrenalsoreceivehelp fromthefoodbank.Today,halfoftheprovincespoorchildrenliveinthe LowerMainland,about77,000.Thechildpovertyrateis4.3percent.1in4 childreninRichmondliveinpoverty.Povertycouldcausebadhealth, obesity,badmentalhealth,andunhealthynewbabies.Forpoorchildren, theycouldleaveschoolearlytowork.Theywouldstarttoeatunhealthy food,andalsostarttosmokeanddrinkalcohol.

Weoftenfindourneighbourvolunteeringtheirtimetohelpothers, especiallyourselves.Atschool,ourchildrendomanyfundraisersforless fortunatepeople.Atchurch,wehelpothersevenifwebelieveindifferent faiths.Asanimmigrant,IamoftenmovedbyhowmuchtimeCanadians spendvolunteeringandhelpingothers.IbelievethisistheCanadianvalue. Slide9:YoucandropofffoodatSafeway,SaveOnFoodsandLondon Drugs.YoucanalsodropoffdonationstoMarketplaceIGAand communitycenters.YoucanalsodropofffooddirectlytotheRFB.Their hoursareMondaytoFridayfrom9a.m.to3p.m.,Thursdaysfrom9a.m. to7p.m.,andSaturdayfrom10a.m.to2p.m. Slide10:Youcanalsoplanafooddrive.Thefoodbankcanprovide posters,appleboxesandcointins.Theyappreciatedelivery,butcan arrangetopickupthefoodiftheyneedto.Donationformscanbepicked upattheofficefordonationsthatrequiretaxdeductiblereceipts.Also,we aredoingafooddriveherethisweekonThursdayandFriday.Thefoodis keptinyourclassroom.OnFriday,itwillbedroppedoffattheRFB.
