is a pocket trick# impromptu# with two usiness cards. It is so simple in
operation# that it is a pit! to deceive people with it# ut efore including it in
this wonderful ook ;I said wonderful< I tested it on magicians and la!men#
and the /I&E# who knows me ackward# and fooling each and ever! one of
them# here it goes. The effect is that THE 45ECT)T=R HI%4EL& marks each
side of the two cards with the figures# 6# ># 9# and :. Thus he sees each side
and marks them himself# which takes awa! an! idea of faker! that the! ma!
have# should the performer himself do the figuring. The cards are then handed
to the spectator# and when !ou are read!# he opens them and in the center
there is found a message and the cards of course ma! e e2amined as the!
are ordinar!.

@et T/= usiness cards... and use lank ones if !ou can and then look at &I@.
? in the illustration department# which will tell !ou the whole secret. The
message is written on one of the cards and when holding them for the
spectator# casuall!# !our THA%- C=BER4 THE %E44)@E. /hen !ou start
however# have the message side on the ottom of the underneath card. *ow
pull the cards apart# show the upper parts# then !our right hand turns over the
one in that hand and shows it lank# then this card is placed underneath the
other one# and oth turned over end for end# held in right hand# now turn
them end for end again# take the ottom card and place on top# now take
them in right hand# first two fingers on top# and thum underneath# and turn
them slowl! end for end# and as the writing comes into !our view# !our left
thum goes over it# and !our left fingers take the card so that it is held as in
&I@. ?.
*ow hold the cards so spectator can write figure one in the lower right hand
corner. *ow turn the cards end for end towards !ou and have a > placed on
the card which is now on top. /ith the right hand# turn this card over and have
a three placed in the same manner. )fter this is done# simpl! move this card

over to the right# and let them put a four on the under card. *ow the! have
actuall! seen each side# and numered each side# and still the message will
appear for them while the! are holding the cards. "ou ma! also have a numer
prediction using this same procedure. It is 4= simple# !ou ma! not desire to
tr! it# ut if !ou C=*,T# !ou don,t know what magic is and proal! don,t care#
for it is alread! a trick that has 5R=BE* to e a fooler.
) good plan# and one which I alwa!s use# is efore !ou show the message#
take the cards# and TE)R =&& E)CH corner that has a numer# placing the
corners down in front of them and sa!ing# .There !ou are# the numers !ou
wrote# !ou e2amined each side# wrote the numers# etc.# etc.. The reason for
this is that perhaps some 4%)RT Repulican will notice that the message was
on numer =*E# and if the numer is on the card at the finish# he might figure
that it %A4T H)BE -EE* 4=%E/HERE# and so .get. the trick. -ut# with the
numers =&&# the! do not know /H)T 5)RTICAL)R 4ICE the message

worked with a handkerchief o2 and I,ll give the patter as I go along. &ill up
!our o2 with an!thing !ou want ut !ou must have in it a large slice of !ellow
cheese. ;%ouse ait< 5aint a oard !ellow if !ou,re 4cotch. I use real cheese.
*ow for the stor!# ."ou know folks# there was a magician one time that
traveled all over the countr! and made a ig hit and lots of mone!. &inall!# he
got old# as we all do# and wanted to settle down# so he ought a little countr!
store wa! up in %aine and left his magic ehind. He was an awfull! la0!
magician# and the onl! thing he othered to take with him to the store was this
o2 ;now !ou show !our hank o2# taking the ottom off and showing thru the
o2 itself<.
.The store was one of those kind where !ou could u! an!thing from a spool of
thread to a ruer hot water ug or an oil urner. )nd the magician used to sit
ack of his counter# and go to sleep with his feet on the shelves# and if
an!od! came in and wanted an!thing# he,d simpl! take down the o2# show it
empt!# ;do so< and then produce whatever the! asked for# put the o2 ack
and go to sleep again.
.&or instance# if a lad! came in and wanted a handkerchief# he,d show the o2
empt! ;do so< and then he,d sa! the magic words# .I,m the &uller -rush man#.
and he,d reach in# take out the handkerchief# show the o2 empt! again# take
the lad!,s mone!# and go ack to sleep. If a man wanted a o2 of matches#
he,d show the o2 empt! ;do so< and then sa! the magic words again# and
produce the matches ;small folding kind< and go ack to sleep.
./ell# one da! a feller came in and asked him if he had an! inding. The
magician said# ./ell# I don,t know# let,s see.. He showed the o2 empt! ;do
so< and then reached in# after sa!ing the magic words# and pulled this out ;!ou
now pull out aout a !ard or two of white or lack tape# u! it in the five and
ten< and sa!s# .Is that what !ou wanted3. The man sa!s ;frown of
uncertaint!<# .*o# I don,t think so# that isn,t the kind of inding she wants..

let me tell !ou of a little impromptu trick with another fellow,s deck that
appeals to me a lot. Hence its appearance here. I won,t other to tell !ou the
effect ut will e2plain it as I go along.
)n!one,s deck is shuffled thoroughl!. "ou take deck in left hand and hold it as
for dealing. *ow let the spectator cut the deck somewhere# and note the card
he cut at# vi0D the ottom card of his portion. He replaces his cards on the
deck# ut just as he drops them# !our little finger goes in etween and !ou
immediatel! make the pass# and take the top card in !our right hand# and sa!#
.*ow !our card is on top# I won,t look at it# ut I,ll place it in the center..
4tart to do so# and then as an after+thought# !ou hold up the card so the! can
see it# and sa!# .That,s !our card# isn,t it3. and the %I*ATE "=A H=LC IT A5#
tip the deck and glimpse the ottom card# which will e his card. I have never
een caught on this ecause the second the! are looking at the card !ou are
showing them# "=A are looking at the ottom card. The! can,t see !ou
ecause the! can,t look T/= 5L)CE4 )T THE 4)%E TI%E.
*ow !ou C=ALC name it# ut that wouldn,t e good enough# so let,s get an
effect. /hen he sa!s it isn,t his card# tell him that !ou will allow HI% to find it.
&alse shuffle if !ou like# keeping the card on the ottom. *ow we,ll sa! it is the
&ive of Hearts. 4utract 6> from E> and !ou have :F. *ow ask him to give !ou
an! numer at all. 4uppose he sa!s 69 ;we don,t care what he sa!s<. Count
from !our left hand into !our right hand# 69 cards# without disturing their
order# and then hold up those 69 cards in right hand so spectator can see
ottom card of the 69# and ask him if it is his card. He,ll answer# .*o.# of
course# and !ou tell him he isn,t doing so well# and to tr! again. *ame some
other numer. /e,ll sa! that he names ?. Keep the thirteen cards in the right
hand# and from the left hand count ? more under the thirteen# so !ou can hold
up the right hand unch now and he sees the ottom card and again he
answers# .*o..
Have him give another numer. The whole purpose is to add up the cards until
:F or thereaouts is reached. 97 or 98 is =. K. and after the numer around
:F is reached# put the cards in right hand A*CER cards in left hand and if the
numer reached was actuall! :F# give him the deck and tell him to spell it out
and he will get on the last letter# the card he is thinking of.
If the numer of cards taken off in the right hand was 97 when !ou placed
them under the left hand portion# throw two cards on the tale face up# have
one touched# and show it and then show the other# oth cards he sa!s# are not
his# and !ou -AR" these# and then have him spell. If it is :> have him select
two cards# one at a time from the deck# and after he sa!s the! are not his#
place them on top. This is all done naturall!# and the idea is that !ou are going

average spectators are interested in the procedure ecause it concerns them

=ne more thing# suppose the numer arrives at around 9E or 9?. "ou would
like to make it fort! even# ut it isn,t asolutel! necessar!# so !ou sa!# .This
time# name a numer etween 6 and 6F# and then whatever numer the! give

in a deck of cards. &or !ears there have een new card tricks and there alwa!s
will e. %a!e !ou,d even like this one. This is a sleight and I never thought an
awful lot of it# until @en. @rant and )l -aker# and )rt %unroe# who !ou must
admit# know something aout cards# told me to e sure and include it. It,s a
top change and it fools them for one reason# and that is# the cover+up is
perfect.
The idea is to have the deck all evened up# and with the THA%- C=A*T# cards
in left hand# count two cards# and lift them with the right hand# thum at rear
and >nd and 9rd fingers picking up the cards# with first finger curled on top.
4ee &I@. 8 in the illustration department. This illustration curls the card too
much# ut it emphasi0es it simpl! to show !ou the card must e curled. 'ust a
little# -AT a little. *ow show it as one card ! holding it up.
*ow comes the dirt! work. "ou just showed it ! turning the right hand over to
the right# so the! could see the card. *ow !our right hand comes ack =BER
THE CECK# and the second that it I4 over the deck# !ou drop the under card#
-AT *= HE4IT)TI=*# keep on going# and immediatel! !our right thum allows
the end of card to drop# and the upper end of card is clipped etween the tips
of first and second fingers. This comes naturall! to !ou# if !ou hold the cards
as in &I@. 8.


*ow !ou insert the card in the deck# ! pushing it in# and the position of !our
hand and the card in !our fingers is shown !ou in &I@. 6F. )s soon as !ou put
it in# take !our right hand awa!# and with first finger of left hand# continue
pushing the card in all the wa!. *ow with left thum and fingers# slowl! turn
the top card over and there she is.
The whole secret of fooling an!one with this move is the cover+up# as the!
C)**=T 5=44I-L" see the card drop# ecause !our hand and arm cover the
dropping. Con,t do it too fast and !ou,ll fool them. I might sa! that Ten Kai#

I mean just ideas. I have one here# and I,m taking too darn man! pains to
show !ou e2actl! what I mean... too man! pains for the mone!... we use a
rope in this little L)A@H# and I decided to call this real magic# and so whenever
!ou do it start ! sa!ing# ./ould !ou like to see some RE)L %)@IC3. The
following description of a rope tie is not mine# ut in order for !ou to do the
idea# and get the giggle# I,ll have to descrie it to !ou.

&irst# of course# !ou get a rope. If !ou can,t smoke hold it in !our left hand as
in &I@. 6. It should e aout > or 9 feet long# I mean the rope# not the
illustration. *ow take the ottom of rope marked .-. and ring it up as in &I@.

*e2t# !our left thum rolls the ropes to !our right# which simpl! changes their
positions# as shown in &I@. 9. *ow pull up end marked .).# up thru the fingers#
and put the end thru the loop as in &I@. :. *ow all !ou do is pull down on .). a
little# pull up on .-. a little# then continue this alternate pulling ) LITTLE )T )
TI%E# until the rope looks as in &I@. E# and it will appear that !ou have a knot
there# certainl!.

That shows !ou how to tie the fake knot. Let them all see it and then cover it
! closing the left hand over it# so the ends stick out# and then have two
spectators hold the ends# ut not tightl!.
*ow let,s go ack to the start of the trick. /hen !ou pulled the rope out# !ou
also pulled out something else# uneknown to the spectators. )nd that was a
K*=T. This was palmed or kept concealed in the right hand. 4impl! tie a knot
in a rope# cut off oth sides of the rope close to the knot# and !ou have a knot.
This is what !ou palm.
*ow after spectators hold the ends# swap hands holding rope. "ou had !our
left hand in middle. *ow take it awa!# and hold it with right hand which
conceals knot# ut change hands in such a manner that the spectators won,t
see that there is no knot in the middle of the rope. *ow tell them that !ou put
a knot in the rope and the spectators are holding ends# and !ou will show them
some RE)L %)@IC# and as !ou sa! that# open hand slowl! and show them that
!ou have apparentl! taken the knot right off the rope. %agicians will e
surprised# and will sa! it is clever. La!men will open their e!es in
astonishment. )nd even )**E%)** laughed when I sat down to pla!.

e complete without a poker deal# so here,s one that I,m sure !ou,ll like#
ecause it is fast# it is sure# and it is a surprise. It will get !ou prestige for
eing clever with !our hands# and !ou can use it in !our act for clus or do it
in a parlor with an!one,s deck.
"ou la! out the four aces and as the spectators tell !ou the order in which to
pick them up# that is# the suits# !ou do so# and insert them in different parts of
the deck# then a 1uick shuffle and it is all over. "ou simpl! deal the cards for a
four handed poker deal and !ou get the four aces. @osh# I,d hate to pla! poker
with that gu!.
*ow see how eas! it is. )ll it is# is the THA%- C=A*T. La! the cards out face
up# I mean the aces# and then with deck in left hand# as !ou in1uire what ace
to pick up first# !our thum is counting THREE cards. /hen the! tell !ou what
ace to pick up first# pick it up and insert it in the deck under the three cards
!ou just counted. Keep the reak and count down three more cards# etc. until
!ou get all four aces in the pack with three cards etween each one. Co this
casuall! as if !ou didn,t care /HERE the! went. The idea is that !ou are
putting them somewhere &REEL" in the deck# regardless of where the! go.
*ow a 1uick false shuffle and deal ,em out.
/hen I show this to magicians# and I alwa!s do when I get a chance# I la! out
the four aces and ask them if the! like four ace tricks. The! don,t think of a
poker deal# and so the! watch for nothing in particular. Then I go thru the
routine. "ou,re welcome.

A 0-/T%H FOR A 2E%K
4o man! fellows# oth in this countr! and England# have asked me to devise
an undetectale method for the switch of a deck# that I think sometime that I,ll
put it in a ook# ut not this one. I like it too well. I have used it four !ears
m!self# and the onl! one that knows it eside m!self is that peerless and
efficient master of the craft# @eneral Al!sses &ranklin @rant# of 5ittsfield# %ass.
This method that I think I,ll write aout some time is this. In the ack of m!
coat# which ! the wa!# is a regular usiness coat# there is a slit at the ottom
of the coat. The regular slit that comes in an! suit coat. I don,t like metal
gimmicks as the! ulge out too much so here is what I did. Immediatel! on
the left side of coat# ne2t to slit# I made a pocket# with opening at the top#
aout twice the length of a deck of cards and a little deeper. The ottom of this
pocket came to within an inch or an inch and a half from the ottom of m!
cost# and the end nearest slit was aout two inches in from slit.
=n the right side of coat# ne2t to the slit# I made another pocket with the
opening at the -=TT=%# and this pocket is just ig enough to hold a full deck
of cards loosel!. )t the opening there is a flap# and a utton hole and a utton
so that I could put the deck in the pocket and then utton the flap over it. The
pocket is sewed in just high enough from the ottom of the coat so that when
the flap is loose# it will not show under the coat# and the side of the pocket was
perhaps# aout an inch or two inches from the side of the slit.
*ow I had the deck set up for whatever trick I wanted to do# put it in the
pocket and uttoned the flap. I had a deck to match that set+up deck. and I
did tricks with it for the o!s. I also knew what card was on T=5 of the set+up
deck. *ow when I got read! and the cards were thoroughl! shuffled over a
period of several tricks# I had the deck shuffled again# and impressed this on
them# that it was trul! shuffled. I ran thru the deck and let them see it was
mi2ed. I saw it was too# and in running thru I noticed where the *ine of Clus
was. ;I am now presuming that the top card of the set+up deck is the *ine of
Clus.<
I cut the deck at this point and shuffled falsel!# so the nine is still on top# and
then I proceed to force it on someone. I had the card put ack in the deck and
shuffled again. *ow I told the spectator to give me the deck ehind m! ack
and I turned around to take it ;and I can take it<. )fter I got the deck# I faced
the spectators again# of course# and said something like# .*ow !ou took a card.

that an!one,s deck is shuffled ! a spectator and a card is freel! selected with
no force. This card is replaced ! spectator in one half of the deck. The two
halves are then placed together. Ceck is cut again# and spectator selects a
half. He picks it up# counts the cards one ! one on performer,s hand# and

determine the numer he counts down from the top of the other half of the

is what we,ll call this one ecause we use four dimes. This is reall! an after
dinner trick# ut !ou could use it after reakfast or on a rug# if !ou have one.
It,s the principle of four ojects placed in the corners of a napkin or a
handkerchief and finall! the! all reach one corner. Lots of fellows who read this
ook are magicians who wish to entertain their friends with the minimum of
effort in practice and this will suit them to a .T..
I,ll detail the method I use# as I do this in restaurants just as the check comes.
The idea is that !ou spread out a napkin and place a dime at each corner# or
aout an inch or an inch and a half in from the corner. *ow !ou take a pla!ing
card# or a usiness card and cover the upper right dime# and taking another
dime in the left hand# !ou reach under the tale# hold the edge of the dime
against the tale with left hand# and then let it ang flat against the tale
itself# giving the impression that it has gone thru the tale# then !our right
hand lifts up the card and there are T/= dimes# where there was onl! one a
moment efore.
%a!e I should tell !ou that !ou have an e2tra dime with a tin! little wa2 on it#
and this is stuck on the face side of the pla!ing card# or as I do# stick it on one
side of !our usiness card# ecause it is more natural to use a usiness card in
a cafe. Looks more impromptu.
/hen !ou cover the upper right dime with the card# !our second finger
releases the wa2ed dime# as !ou la! the card down. *ow !our left hand goes
under the tale with another one of the dimes# as descried aove# and as it
comes out# the dime is resting on fingers of hand# !our right hand picks up
card and spectators see the two dimes.+ "our right hand goes over dime in left
hand# !our left hand takes the card with dime underneath# and then transfers
the whole usiness to the right hand# which deposits it again on top of the two
dimes.
"ou repeat this move with the other dimes# and finall! !ou have the four dimes
under the one card. "ou have two methods of getting rid of the other dime# the
last one !ou placed under the tale. Either snap it up !our left coat sleeve# or

Have a card selected and as it is replaced# instead of ringing !our little finger

glass in !our lap. The newspaper still shows the form of the glass however#
and the spectators think that it is still there. Then !ou crash !our hand down

Cavenport comes out with a celluloid glass that is the est imitation of a glass

The props are a wooden frame# a piece of glass and a paper ag. I use a frame
aout E ! 7 inches# and it is just like a picture frame e2cept that there is a
slot at the ottom of it which is wide enough and thick enough so that the
glass can slide thru L==4EL".
"our ag is also prepared as there is another slit in that so that the glass can
also slide thru that E)4IL". I use the ordinar! manila grocer,s ag. *ow if !ou
put the glass in the ack of the frame and hold it at the top# !ou can easil! put
in rads# for no reason# e2cept that ever!one naturall! would e2pect !ou to
put rads in to hold the glass in the frame. If !ou put them in now )@)I*4T
THE @L)44 IT4EL&# when !ou let go of the glass# it slides right out thru the
ottom of the frame.
Later on in the trick# when !ou put the frame in the ag# as soon as it gets out
of sight# !ou let the glass go from !our right hand# and !our left hand# at the
ottom of the ag# keeps the glass from falling right out. "our right hand
guides the glass as !ou put frame in ag# and lets it out aout an inch# just so
that the ottom edge of glass goes thru the slit in the ottom of ag# and there
the left hand holds it. The top of ag is then twirled around to close it up# and
the ag is laid down on tale# with ack of ag awa! from audience.
Then later when !ou pick up the ag# !ou simpl! take the top of it# pull it
forward on the tale# and the glass will come out# if !ou pull the ag =* THE
T)-LE# not tipping it up. Then take it all up in !our hand and the glass sta!s on
the tale.
=ne more thing# efore !ou put the glass !ou will also put a picture in it of
either a girl or a fellow# so !ou must otain a picture of someone# or use !our
own if !ou wish# ut if !ou do# !ou will# of course# change the patter to suit.

.I was talking with a dentist the other da! and we were speaking aout
collecting mone!. He told me that he was having tough luck# that collecting
mone! with him was like pulling teeth. I was riding in an upper at the time.

of marking cards is the ne2t thing that !ou will get m! dears. I learned this
from a soldier in a town called -elveau2 in &rance in 6868# and have een
using it ever since. This chap was an e2+nav! man and he sure cleaned up the
camp pla!ing lackjack and stud. I used to sit around the cafes a lot ;when
ehind the lines< and knowing that I did a couple of tricks# a fellow tipped me
off that the ".%.C.). had a couple of )merican Cecks of Cards. 4o I went over
to the .hut. and to make a long stor! short# I picked up at a good price# the
last or onl! three decks of cards the! had.
It seems that right after this# this e2+nav! man tried to get a deck or two from
the .". and the! told him that I had ought the last lot. 4o he looked me up
and found me over in a cafe ;and what cognac<. /ell# not knowing when I
might pick up an! more cards# and reall! needing them# as I was doing shows
for the o!s whenever the opportunit! presented# I told him .*=.# and onl!
after much persuasion# and with the promise that he would show me the .gag.
I gave him a deck.
/e went upstairs and here is what he did. He laid all the aces out# then the
twos# etc. thruout the deck. Then he took a ra0or lade and roke it into
halves. Then with one of the I*4ICE C=R*ER4# he would mark the four aces#
then turn them end for end# and mark the other corners# then the deuces# etc.
and when the corner got dull# after seven or eight cards# he would use the
opposite inside corner# and then the =THER half of the lade.
He used up a few lades to mark the deck. Later on# I saw him over in one of
the other cafes# with a unch of fellows in front of him# and he had his hat on
the tale simpl! loaded with francs of all denomination. He was pla!ing
lackjack and he cleaned them all out.
I got fift! francs for the deck and the knowledge I have just imparted to !ou.
4plit !our lade in two# use the inside corners of each half# and mark !our
cards at the point where !ou wish to. It is a real good method. There is
nothing to dr!# no ink# and no mess.

it. Cut the cards so that there are two piles on the tale. *ow with the cards
still on the tale# riffle the two piles together# leaving the four aces on top. )sk

!ou that the! are on top. *ow do it again ut this time make a couple of false
cuts# the doule and triple# and then turn the four top cards over and there are

time !ou shuffle aout four or five cards on T=5 of the aces# s1uare them up.
*ow shuffle again# leaving four or five more cards on top of the others again#
so !ou now have ten or eleven cards on top of the aces# ut !ou must know

riffle.
*ow ask them where the aces are# and the!,ll sa! the! don,t know. "ou sa!

*e2t# I took three different paper covers which come on ooks all the time#
and put them on the ooks I had. *ow I had two ooks aout the same si0e#
and another ook much smaller# with THREE CI&&ERE*T 5)5ER C=BER4 =*
THE%# so that an!one would naturall! think# when I took them from a ook
shelf# or even from m! tale# that the ooks were ordinar! ooks and different
ones. -ut# each of the inside pages were e2actl! the same.
*ow when I use it for a show# I )L/)"4 have two other ooks# different si0es#
and different paper covers# and I have one of these on top and one on ottom
of the pile# and when I have one selected# the! /ILL *EBER &)IL T= T)KE

cards are prepared in the following manner. 4a! !ou wish to force page 9?#
line :# !ou take a three spot# a si2# and a four# and on the ack of each of the
cards# !ou place a small da of CI)CH"L=* aout an inch from top of card in
the middle of the ack# and another da aout an inch from the ottom. Then
take an! other cards from the deck and press one against the ack of each of
the three cards# then put them on the face of the deck with the 9# ?# and : not

that these two cards represent a numer. The first card he took represents the

This numer represents the numer of the page of the ook he is to look at#
and the third card he takes# whatever numer is upon that# represents the
LI*E on the page. I alwa!s mention to them that if the! take a face card to let

this is just a ps!chological remark.
/hen !ou put the three cards on top of deck after the! are prepared at first#
rememer to have the first card underneath a three spot# then a si2 under the

that page and look at the line and read it aloud and that is the same thing that

and palm it on top when I am read!< have one person come up# and give them
the oard to hold outstretched# just as if the! were holding a tra!. *ow take
!our cards# hold them up and fan them so audience can see the! are all
different and an ordinar! deck# and then spread them out on the oard face
down. *ow have another spectator come up and help !ou. He is to look
intentl! at the cards# and finall! settle his mind on one# and =*E =*L"# and
that card he finall! settles on# he is to push it out aout two inches from the

portion in left hand# and !our right fingers now insert the card in the center
somewhere of the left hand portion. This is apparentl! their card# ut when
!ou throw the top portion on the ottom portion# all !ou do is turn over the top

esides making it appear on top# I tell them the name of it also efore turning
it over.
The success of this trick depends on !our nonchalance# and the manner that
