From the Pastor’s Desk
My Dear People:
This past Tuesday, I concelebrated the
funeral Mass for Bill Powell at St. Peter’s with
Fr. Kelly, the pastor. An OLS Parishioner ?
Not quite, but close. Bill married Barbara
O’Donnell, the daughter of founding pillars of
this church’s location on Oxmoor Road,
Huber and Susie O’Donnell. Still members of
OLS are her brother and sisters, Mike
O’Donnell, Mary Sue Cooney, Harriett
Bischoff, Maureen King, and Carolyn Erhardt.
Though Bill retired twenty years ago because
of sickness, in his time he was a most
successful banker, serving as president of
First National of Birmingham and its sister
bank, which ultimately became AmSouth.
Bill’s great claim to fame in the mind of God
was his dedication to his own family, to his
extended family and to God’s family. Bill
was married to Barbara for fifty-three years,
whom he idolized, in an exemplary marriage.
God chose Bill for greater sanctity by giving
him a cross to bear with twenty years of
multiple lung problems. As a convert he had
a devotion to Sunday Mass till his sickness
prevented him from attending. As a man of
God, his vocation as father and as husband
was exemplary. His love of neighbor in
God’s name extended to God’s family.
Besides serving his country throughout forty-
four years of banking, Bill volunteered his
time and talents to so many different charities
for the cause of cancer research as chairman
of the Alabama State Leukemia Society
Drive, and president and board member of
the American Cancer Society. The United
Way was the umbrella for which he did great
works, becoming chairman of the celebrated
United Way Campaign. He was a unique
combination of humility and leadership. Our
sympathies to Barbara his wife, their
children, and all the members of his family.
Heart in Cullman, with his personal drive to
spread the faith, asked me to place a CD
rack in the vestibule of the church to make
excellent religious CDs available to our
people. Putting more in the already crowded
vestibule is a problem. (I coveted that large
vestibule at St. Peter’s; however, I think we
have a larger sanctuary). The renovation of
the vestibule and stairwells are on the
drawing board, and will materialize. For this
reason we have put the CD rack of great
talks in the Ave Maria Shop. The CDs give
us notables such as Scott Hahn, Fr. Corapi,
Jeff Cavens, Bishop Fulton Sheen and
Mother Theresa. However, my all-time
favorite of the selections is Anne Marie
Schmidt, a young Catholic lady during the
Second World War with her experience in
German and then Russian concentration
camps. She was shot by a firing squad but
not killed. It is her faith and struggle to
forgive her enemies that is so inspiring along
with so many near death experiences.
There is a voluntary offering of $3.00 per CD;
but if you don’t have the change and will
listen to the CD, please take whatever you
want.
Just a reminder: The RCIA class will begin
the first Monday of October. If you would like
to learn more about the Catholic faith to
convert or for any other reason, call the office
and sign up or just resolve to come
October 5.

SCHOOL TO WELCOME GRANDPARENTS
TO SPECIAL DAY
John Carroll Catholic High School welcomes past
and present grandparents to the school on
Saturday, Sept.12, 2009 to celebrate National
Grandparents Day. The day will start with a Mass
at 10 a.m. in John Carroll’s Our Mother of
Perpetual Help Chapel celebrated by Father Rick
Chenault. Following Mass, there will be a brief
reception in the school’s Commons Area just
outside the chapel until 12 noon.
Current students and alumni are also welcome.

The Benedictine Sisters of Cullman,
Alabama will be holding a Benefit Auction on
Saturday, September 19, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00
p.m. to benefit the Building Renovation Fund of
Sacred Heart Monastery. Things auctioned will
include antiques, Sacred Heart Academy items,
unique and interesting furniture, musical
instruments, etc.

We are compiling information on all of our Parish

Organizations for our new Information
Directory. If you are a leader or contact person
for any of these groups, please contact the
Church office so we can be assured that all
names, numbers and descriptions are correct.
The last directory was compiled in 2004 so we
really need your help bringing the directory up to
date. This is a huge undertaking and we would

PRAY FOR VOCATIONS
If you are willing to offer your life for Jesus’ sake,
you will find it. By walking the path we come to
know Jesus’ promise is real. Pray for courage and
the willingness to “let go and let God.” (Matthew
16:21-27) For our youth, may they receive support
and guidance as they face the challenges in their
daily lives.

Birmingham has scheduled an Altar Server
Recognition event for September 13 from 2:00

OLS School Fundraiser-The OLS School
PTO is currently sponsoring two school
fundraisers. The students are selling the “Enjoy
the City” coupon books, featuring more than
$1500.00 in valuable coupons and offers. The
books are $20.00 per book with the proceeds
going to the OLS School Library. Anyone
interested in purchasing a book can do so in the
school office. The annual gift wrap sale is also
underway with proceeds from this sale going
towards technology upgrades throughout the
school. Anyone interested in placing an order
can call the school office (879-3237) for a
catalog.
