DEAN'S MESSAGE
The Post Graduate Diploma in Management (Rural Management) at XIMB is a refreshing and innovative departure from the traditional focus of management education. Here, we emphasize on the need to expand the use of management science to rural sector, by delving into the dynamics of rural India and understanding the essence of doing business in rural India. This programme captures the nation's imagination of growing at 8 to 10 percent per annum through a process of rural catch up with the urban India. We create managers not only for the corporate sector but also for the social sector. A participant of this program not only develops a deep understanding of the rural sector but also learns to adapt the best managerial practices to the unique circumstances of the rural society. During the two year program the students are exposed to the rural society through various field trips and projects as part of their curriculum. A 4 week long stint in the rural area engaged with an NGO or similar organizations helps the students to get first-hand experience of rural life, preparing them for serving rural economy in a better way. The exposure has been capitalized by many of our alumni, who have become entrepreneurs by being able to spot significant business opportunities that connect the urban to the rural sector. Welcome to XIMB! I am sure you will find that our students, trained by the academic rigor and spirit of excellence of this institute, are ready to usher in the winds of change into the rural scene of our nation. Classroom Segment
This segment exposes the students to the theories and concepts of basic management disciplines, specific requirements for understanding the issues of rural development as well as new and emerging areas in the broad spectrum of rural management. The students are often required to carry out micro-research projects in selected villages and different organisational environments. They strengthen the ability of the students to design systems that can make practical connections between the local, regional and global realities and plan innovative interventions in rural areas.

to learn the modus operandi of the different dimensions of the organizations. Some of the projects on which the students have already worked on are: Developing Market Entry Strategy Competitor Analysis Market Research Impact Assessment of Various Government Programs Business Development Strategy Preparation of District Level Plans Loan Portfolio Assessment for Small & Marginal Farmers Service Delivery Model for Rural Financial Services Rural Marketing Campaign Designing

International Collaborations
XIMB has been working on developing international collaborations and has already entered into student and faculty exchange, and joint research arrangements with Loyola College, Maryland, GSBE, Poland, REIMS, EUROMED, France, UFSIA, Belgium, Facultad de Economia, Spain and USBS, South Africa. XIMB has been organising international seminars and conferences in association with these institutions. The rural management students have been involved in organising and participating in an international workshop with the University of Maastricht, Netherlands, whose faculty are part of the international networks on social entrepreneurship, institutional learning, change and global development. This provides students with insights into the best practices across the world.

Rural Living and Learning Experience (RLLE)

Rural Living and Learning Experience is a month long visit to rural India which imparts a higher level of understanding of the rural ecosystem. It encompasses knowledge gathering on various spheres of living in a rural society which ultimately transforms into a research on the consumer behaviour. The students are advised to unlearn classroom learning so that they reach their destinations without any presumptions. This aids them in keeping an open mind. The dimensions the students seek to understand from the society are economical, anthropological and socialist in nature. This creates a new zest for learning and applying the concepts in the context of newly acquired understanding. This distinct component of the curriculum keep students anchored to reality and at the same time prepares them for a world outside this institution.

Independent Research Projects (IRP)

The Institute actively encourages the students and provides them with an opportunity to pursue Independent Research Projects (IRP). IRPs build on the interest and willingness of students to learn through a project over a longer duration (sometimes across two terms) that could add significantly to a deeper understanding of rural management discipline. IRPs are customized offerings and are not compulsory but can be used by students to gain 3 credits in lieu of an elective in the second year.

PROGRAM DESIGN
The Post-Graduate Diploma in Management (Rural Management) Program has five mutually supportive learning segments: Classroom Sessions, Field Exposure Visits, Rural Living & Learning Experience(RLLE), Summer Internship Program (SIP), Independent Research Projects (IRP), Immersion Courses, International Collaboration and Outbound Leadership Program.

Outbound Leadership Program (OBL)

It strives to equip the students with more effective techniques and better decision making abilities. It exposes them to the real life applications of the development and management concepts learnt in the classroom. It also helps them to come up with innovative and target-oriented solutions to the major issues faced by the organizations. Another aspect that the students learn during their SIPs is to address the operational and functional problems pertaining to the organizations. The students seek

Immersion Courses

Spardha is another landmark initiative of RMAX. Spardha tests the social entrepreneurship quotient of participants through a series of competitions encompassing sectors which influence the rural scenario of India. Spardha does not stop at being a competition but also aims at operating ideas and policy suggestions by participants which can be put to use in real-time by practitioners. In the past, it has attracted participants from several top business schools like ISB, XLRI, NITIE, IMI etc. ACARA Challenge 2012 - A social entrepreneurship challenge of international level organized by University of Minnesota.

NSoRM (National Symposium on Rural Management) - It brought together, for the first time in 33 years of the existence of this field, all the leading institutions with Rural Management Programs, a large proportion of the significant people in the field and a wide cross section of practitioners, policy-makers, academics, RM students and alumni. It has been historic in that it has helped forge a common identity, initiated formation of an Association of Rural Management Schools/ Programs (NARMS) and organizing annual Symposia, and set a precedent for collective thinking and discussion about this very important field.

Immersion courses for students of Rural Management on topics such as Entrepreneurship, Commodities & Derivatives, Microfinance etc.

PGDM (RM) students organize and participate in a flurry of activities conducted under the aegis of other student communities like
Illuminatix (Media and PR cell of XIMB) IRC (International Relations Committee of XIMB) MAXIM (Marketing Association of XIMB) SRC (Social Responsibility Cell) X-FIN (Finance Association of XIMB) XIMAHR (XIM Association for Human Resource) X-OPS ( XIM Operations and Production Society) X-SYS (Systems Association of XIMB) Alumni Committee Rural Managers' Association of XIMB (RMAX)

Challenges in Rural Market

Extending reach of product and services to remote locations Communicating with the largely heterogeneous audience Understanding the rural consumers

Event Design From Concept to Execution

Gramotsava is held in the most prominent Rural Haats (Economic units where transactions take place) around Bhubaneswar, Cuttack and Puri. This helps us to create a significant impact on the ideas and products being promoted among rural consumers. Gramotsava is divided into three phases:

Benefits to the Students

Activities in Gramotsava help bridge the gap between classroom learning and practical applicability of theoretical concepts learnt. It helps students in understanding rural markets, behaviour of the rural consumer and the agricultural practices prevalent in Odisha, as it involves extensive travelling into the rural hinterlands of Odisha.
