STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURE OF ENGINE ON WIND TUNNEL TESTING IN ILST

(Indonesian Low Speed Tunnel, a facility of BPPT – LAGG)

I. PREPARATION
1. The wind tunnel facilities preparation is done by LAGG's team which is formed based on a decree
issued by Head of UPT LAGG.
2. Model's preparation is done by customer's team accompanied by LAGG's team members
appointed by Project Engineer.
3. Model's installation to the test section is executed by LAGG's team accompanied by a customer's
team member appointed by customer's Project Engineer.
4. Wind tunnel testing support system have to be checked and verified that they are functioning
according to their related documentation (the system such as Air Distribution System, Mass flow
Control System, Engine Monitoring System, and so on).
5. System calibration and functional checked have to be done prior to wind tunnel testing
execution by LAGG's team accompanie by customer's team member.
6. The engine used in the testing is functioning well and within its specified lifetime (proven by a
guarantee letter or other form of documentation).
7. Propellers to be used for the testing have been balanced.
8. Wind tunnel facility and support system readiness has to be ensured (everything is checked and
ready for operation) prior to execution of a wind tunnel testing.

II. WIND TUNNEL TESTING EXECUTION

1. Wind tunnel testing execution is based on a test plan which has been agreed by both Customer's
Project Engineer and LAGG's team Project Engineer. The plan has to be displayed in the control
room.
2. For safety reason, no one is allowed to enter the Testing Hall during an engine on wind tunnel
testing execution.
3. The setting of model and its parts (control surfaces, propellers, model's tail and so on) are done
by LAGG's team member accompanied by a customer's team member.
4. Last checked prior to wind tunnel testing execution is done by a customer's team member and
LAGG team member appointed by LAGG's Project Engineer.
5. A maximum of 2 (two) persons from customer's team are allowed to be present in the control
room aside from LAGG's wind tunnel testing team members.
6. After everything is ready, a wind tunnel testing is executed in the following order:
a) All EMS parameters are set to their appropriate limit settings.
b) Engine lubrication system is turned on.
c) While the wind speed is still 0 (zero) m/s, the engine rotation is increased to 2000 RPM.
d) Wind tunnel speed is then increased to a required wind speed.
e) The engine rotation is then adjusted to a required RPM.
f) The data can be taken after all of the required configurations have been achieved.

III. FINISHING A TEST

1. After a series of data required in a wind tunnel test is gathered and one run is completed, the
following series of actions are taken to close the run:
a) The engine rotation is reduced to RPM setting as shown in section II point 6.b above.
b) Wind tunnel speed is then reduced to 0 (zero) m/s.
c) Engine rotation is then stop (reduced to 0 RPM).
2. All valves are then closed and the remaining air is released through 4 (four) way valve.
3. All engine on related system is then shut off.
